The relativistic proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (PN-RQRPA) is applied in the calculation of total muon capture rates on a large set of nuclei from $^{12}$C to $^{244}$Pu, for which experimental values are available. The microscopic theoretical framework is based on the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) model for the nuclear ground state, and transitions to excited states are calculated using the PN-RQRPA. The calculation is fully consistent, i.e., the same interactions are used both in the RHB equations that determine the quasiparticle basis, and in the matrix equations of the PN-RQRPA. The calculated capture rates are sensitive to the in-medium quenching of the axial-vector coupling constant. By reducing this constant from its free-nucleon value $g_A = 1.262$ by 10% for all multipole transitions, the calculation reproduces the experimental muon capture rates to better than 10% accuracy.

The Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) is used in evaluation of the total muon capture ratesfor the final nuclei participating in double-beta decay. Several variants of the method are used, depending on the size of the single particle mo del space used, or treatment of the initial bound muon wave function. The resulting capture rates are all reasonably close to each other. In particular, the variant that appears to be most realistic, results in rates in good agreement with the experimental values. There is no necessity for an empirical quenching of the axial current coupling constant $g_A$. Its standard value $g_A$ = 1.27 seems to be adequate.
The muon capture on 3H leading to muonic neutrino and three neutrons in the final state is studied under full inclusion of final state interactions. Predictions for the three-body break-up of 3H are calculated with the AV18 potential, augmented by th e Urbana IX three-nucleon force. Our results are based on the single nucleon weak current operator comprising the dominant relativistic corrections. This work is a natural extension of our investigations of the muon capture on 3He leading to 3H or n+d or n+n+p and muonic neutrino in the final state, presented in Phys. Rev. C90, 024001 (2014).

The electron capture process plays an important role in the evolution of the core collapse of a massive star that precedes the supernova explosion. In this study, the electron capture on nuclei in stellar environment is described in the relativistic energy density functional framework, including both the finite temperature and nuclear pairing effects. Relevant nuclear transitions $J^pi = 0^pm, 1^pm, 2^pm$ are calculated using the finite temperature proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation with the density-dependent meson-exchange effective interaction DD-ME2. The pairing and temperature effects are investigated in the Gamow-Teller transition strength as well as the electron capture cross sections and rates for ${}^{44}$Ti and ${}^{56}$Fe in stellar environment. It is found that the pairing correlations establish an additional unblocking mechanism similar to the finite temperature effects, that can allow otherwise blocked single-particle transitions. Inclusion of pairing correlations at finite temperature can significantly alter the electron capture cross sections, even up to a factor of two for ${}^{44}$Ti, while for the same nucleus electron capture rates can increase by more than one order of magnitude. We conclude that for the complete description of electron capture on nuclei both pairing and temperature effects must be taken into account.
The successful precision measurement of the rate of muon capture on a proton by the MuCap Collaboration allows for a stringent test of the current theoretical understanding of this process. Chiral perturbation theory, which is a low-energy effective field theory that preserves the symmetries and the pattern of symmetry breaking in the underlying theory of QCD, offers a systematic framework for describing $mu p$ capture and provides a basic test of QCD at the hadronic level. We describe how this effective theory with no free parameters reproduces the measured capture rate. A recent study has addressed new sources of uncertainties that were not considered in the previous works, and we review to what extent these uncertainties are now under control. Finally, the rationale for studying muon capture on the deuteron and some recent theoretical developments regarding this process are discussed.
A role of beta-delayed neutron emission and fission in r-process nucleosynthesis attracts a high interest. Although the number of study on them covering r-process nuclei is increasing recently, uncertainties of beta-delayed neutron and fission are st ill large for r-process simulations. Our purpose is to make a new database on beta-delayed neutron emission and fission rates. To this end, the data that are not investigated experimentally have to be predicted. Microscopic theoretical approaches based on a nuclear energy density functional and statistical models are one of the competent tools for the prediction. To obtain beta strength function, p-n relativistic QRPA is adopted. Particle evaporations and fission from nuclear highly excited states are estimated by the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. beta-delayed neutron branching ratios (P_n) are calculated and compared with experimental data. beta-delayed fission branching ratio (P_f) are also assessed by using four different fission barrier data. Calculated P_n values are in a good agreement with experimental data. It is found that energy withdrawal by beta-delayed neutron emission sensitively varies P_n values for nuclei near the neutron drip line. P_f are sensitively dependent on fission barrier data. Newly calculated data on beta-delayed neutron emission and fission are summarized as a table in supplement material. They are provided for studies of r-process as well as other fields such as nuclear engineering.
