The time evolution of a charged point particle is governed by a second-order integro-differential equation that exhibits advanced effects, in which the particle responds to an external force before the force is applied. In this paper we give a simple physical argument that clarifies the origin and physical meaning of these advanced effects, and we compare ordinary electrodynamics with a toy model of electrodynamics in which advanced effects do not occur.

Conservation principles establish the primacy of potentials over fields in electrodynamics, both classical and quantum. The contrary conclusion that fields are primary is based on the Newtonian concept that forces completely determine dynamics, and e lectromagnetic forces depend directly on fields. However, physical conservation principles come from symmetries such as those following from Noethers theorem, and these require potentials for their statement. Examples are given of potentials that describe fields correctly but that violate conservation principles, demonstrating that the correct statement of potentials is necessary. An important consequence is that gauge transformations are severely limited when conservation conditions must be satisfied. When transverse and longitudinal fields are present concurrently, the only practical gauge is the radiation gauge.

It is shown that in semi-classical electrodynamics, which describes how electrically charged particles move according to the laws of quantum mechanics under the influence of a prescribed classical electromagnetic field, only a restricted class of gau ge transformations is allowed. This lack of full gauge invariance, in contrast to the situation in classical and quantum electrodynamics which are fully gauge invariant theories, is due to the requirement that the scalar potential in the Hamiltonian of wave mechanics represent a physical potential. Probability amplitudes and energy differences are independent of gauge within this restricted class of gauge transformation.
We briefly show how classical mechanics can be rederived and better understood as a consequence of three assumptions: infinitesimal reducibility, deterministic and reversible evolution, and kinematic equivalence.
Offshell electrodynamics based on a manifestly covariant off-shell relativistic dynamics of Stueckelberg, Horwitz and Piron, is five-dimensional. In this paper, we study the problem of radiation reaction of a particle in motion in this framework. In particular, the case of above-mass-shell is studied in detail, where the renormalization of the Lorentz force leads to a system of non-linear differential equations for 3 Lorentz scalars. The system is then solved numerically, where it is shown that the mass-shell deviation scalar $ve$ either smoothly falls down to 0 (this result provides a mechanism for the mass stability of the off-shell theory), or strongly diverges under more extreme conditions. In both cases, no runaway motion is observed. Stability analysis indicates that the system seems to have chaotic behavior in the divergent case. It is also shown that, although a motion under which the mass-shell deviation $ve$ is constant but not-zero, is indeed possible, but, it is unstable, and eventually it either decays to 0 or diverges.
Applications of the covariant theory of drive-forms are considered for a class of perfectly insulating media. The distinction between the notions of classical photons in homogeneous bounded and unbounded stationary media and in stationary unbounded m agneto-electric media is pointed out in the context of the Abraham, Minkowski and symmetrized Minkowski electromagnetic stress-energy-momentum tensors. Such notions have led to intense debate about the role of these (and other) tensors in describing electromagnetic interactions in moving media. In order to address some of these issues for material subject to the Minkowski constitutive relations, the propagation of harmonic waves through homogeneous and inhomogeneous, isotropic plane-faced slabs at rest is first considered. To motivate the subsequent analysis on accelerating media two classes of electromagnetic modes that solve Maxwells equations for uniformly rotating homogeneous polarizable media are enumerated. Finally it is shown that, under the influence of an incident monochromatic, circularly polarized, plane electromagnetic wave, the Abraham and symmetrized Minkowski tensors induce different time-averaged torques on a uniformly rotating materially inhomogeneous dielectric cylinder. We suggest that this observation may offer new avenues to explore experimentally the covariant electrodynamics of more general accelerating media.
