CaFe$_2$As$_2$ has been synthesized and found to form in the tetragonal, ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure with lattice parameters $a = 3.912(68) AA$ and $c = 11.667(45) AA$. Upon cooling through 170 K, CaFe$_2$As$_2$ undergoes a first order, structural phase transition to a low temperature, orthorhombic phase with a $2 - 3$ K range of hysteresis and coexistence. This transition is clearly evident in microscopic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. CaFe$_2$As$_2$ is the third member of the AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) family to exhibit such a dramatic phase transition and is a promising candidate for studies of doping induced superconductivity.

Iron-based compounds (IBS) display a surprising variety of superconducting properties that seems to arise from the strong sensitivity of these systems to tiny details of the lattice structure. In this respect, systems that become superconducting unde r pressure, like CaFe$_2$As$_2$, are of particular interest. Here we report on the first directional point-contact Andreev-reflection spectroscopy (PCARS) measurements on CaFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, and on the interpretation of the results using a 3D model for Andreev reflection combined with ab-initio calculations of the Fermi surface (within the density functional theory) and of the order parameter symmetry (within a random-phase-approximation approach in a ten-orbital model). The almost perfect agreement between PCARS results at different pressures and theoretical predictions highlights the intimate connection between the changes in the lattice structure, a topological transition in the hole-like Fermi surface sheet, and the emergence on the same sheet of an order parameter with a horizontal node line.
We report the synthesis and basic physical properties of single crystals of CaFe2As2, an isostructural compound to BaFe2As2 which has been recently doped to produce superconductivity. CaFe2As2 crystalizes in the ThCr2Si2 structure with lattice parame ters a = 3.907(4) A and c = 11.69(2) A. Magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, and heat capacity all show a first order phase transition at T_0 171 K. The magnetic susceptibility is nearly isotropic from 2 K to 350 K. The heat capacity data gives a Sommerfeld coefficient of 8.2 +- 0.3 mJ/molK2, and does not reveal any evidence for the presence of high frequency (> 300 K) optical phonon modes. The Hall coefficient is negative below the transition indicating dominant n-type carriers.
The very nature of the ground state of the pyrochlore compound Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is much debated, as experimental results demonstrate evidence for both a disordered or a long-range ordered ground state. Indeed, the delicate balance of exchange intera ctions and anisotropy is believed to lead to competing states, such as a Quantum Spin Liquid state or a ferromagnetic state which may originate from an Anderson-Higgs transition. We present a detailed magnetization study demonstrating a first order ferromagnetic transition at 245 mK and 150 mK in a powder and a single crystal sample respectively. Its first-order character is preserved up to applied fields of $sim$ 200 Oe. The transition stabilizes a ferromagnetic component and involves slow dynamics in the magnetization. Residual fluctuations are also evidenced, the presence of which might explain some of the discrepancies between previously published data for Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$.
We investigate the crystal structure and lattice vibrations of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by a combined phonon Raman scattering and x-ray powder diffraction experiment under pressures up to $66$ GPa and room temperature. Density functional theory (DFT) and $ab$-i nitio lattice dynamics calculations were also carried out. A first-order structural phase transition associated with an $8$ % collapse of the $c$-axis is observed at high pressures, with phase coexistence being observed between $sim 40$ and $55$ GPa. At lower pressures, lattice and phonon anomalies were observed, reflecting crossovers between isostructural competing states. A critical pressure of $P_1=17$ GPa is associated with: (i) a reduction of lattice volume compressibility and a change of behavior of the tetragonal $c/a$ ratio take place above $P_1$; (ii) a four-fold symmetry-breaking lattice strain associated with lattice disorder; (iii) disappearance of two Raman active modes (at $sim 180$ and $sim 260$ cm$^{-1}$); and (iv) development of an asymmetric Fano lineshape for the $sim 390$ cm$^{-1}$ mode. DFT indicates that the phase above $P_1$ is most likely non-magnetic. Exploring the similarities between iridate and cuprate physics, we argue that these observations are consistent with the emergence of a rotational symmetry-breaking electronic instability at $P_1$, providing hints for the avoided metallization under pressure and supporting the hypothesis of possible competing orders that are detrimental to superconductivity in this family. Alternative scenarios for the transition at $P_1$ are also suggested and critically discussed. Additional phonon and lattice anomalies in the tetragonal phase are observed at $P_2=30$ and $P_3=40$ GPa, indicating further competing phases that are stabilized at high pressures.
Taking the pseudobinary C15 Laves phase compound Ce(Fe$_{0.96}$Al$_{0.04}$)$_2$ as a paradigm for studying a ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition, we present interesting thermomagnetic history effects in magnetotransport as well as mag netisation measurements across this phase transition. A comparison is made with history effects observed across the ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in R$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ crystals.
