In order to later find explicit analytic solutions, we investigate the singularity structure of a fundamental model of nonlinear optics, the four-wave mixing model in one space variable z. This structure is quite similar, and this is not a surprise, to that of the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. The main result is that, in order to be single valued, time-dependent solutions should depend on the space-time coordinates through the reduced variable xi=sqrt{z} exp(-t / tau), in which tau is the relaxation time.

We identify a new four-wave mixing process in which two nearly collinear pump beams produce phase-dependent gain into a weak bisector signal beam in a self-defocusing Kerr medium. Phase matching is achieved by weak-wave advancement caused by cross-ph ase modulation between the pump and signal beams. We relate this process to the inverse of spatial modulational instability and suggest a time-domain analog.
The dynamical degenerate four-wave mixing is studied analytically in detail. By removing the unessential freedom, we first characterize this system by a lower-dimensional closed subsystem of a deformed Maxwell-Bloch type, involving only three physica l variables: the intensity pattern, the dynamical grating amplitude, the relative net gain. We then classify by the Painleve test all the cases when singlevalued solutions may exist, according to the two essential parameters of the system: the real relaxation time tau, the complex response constant gamma. In addition to the stationary case, the only two integrable cases occur for a purely nonlocal response (Real(gamma)=0), these are the complex unpumped Maxwell-Bloch system and another one, which is explicitly integrated with elliptic functions. For a generic response (Re(gamma) not=0), we display strong similarities with the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.
Travelling waves arise in several areas of science, hence modification of travelling wave properties is of great interest. While many studies have demonstrated how to control the form or shape of a solitary travelling wave by employing soliton or dis persion management, far less is known about controlling the motion of a travelling wave while keeping its form unchanged. We present a technique for control of travelling wave motion using time-varying coefficients, which we refer to as wave management. The technique allows one to alter the trajectory of a travelling wave, slowing, stopping, or reversing the direction of the wave, all while ensuring that the wave form is unchanged, and we illustrate this through multiple examples. Our results suggest that wave management is a promising tool for applications where one needs to modify the motion of a wave while preserving its form, and we highlight several potential applications.
We show that the nonlinear stage of modulational instability induced by parametric driving in the {em defocusing} nonlinear Schrodinger equation can be accurately described by combining mode truncation and averaging methods, valid in the strong drivi ng regime. The resulting integrable oscillator reveals a complex hidden heteroclinic structure of the instability. A remarkable consequence, validated by the numerical integration of the original model, is the existence of breather solutions separating different Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrent regimes. Our theory also shows that optimal parametric amplification unexpectedly occurs outside the bandwidth of the resonance (or Arnold tongues) arising from the linearised Floquet analysis.

The generalized perturbative reduction method is used to find the two-component vector breather solution of the Born-Infeld equation $ U_{tt} -C U_{zz} = - A U_{t}^{2} U_{zz} - sigma U_{z}^{ 2} U_{tt} + B U_{z} U_{t} U_{zt} $. It is shown that the so lution of the two-component nonlinear wave oscillates with the sum and difference of frequencies and wave numbers.
