The optical properties of hybrid molecules composed of semiconductor and metal nanoparticles with a weak probe in a strong pump field are investigated theoretically. Excitons in such a hybrid molecule demonstrate novel optical properties due to the coupling between exciton and plasmon. It is shown that a non-absorption hole induced by coherent population oscillation appears at the absorption spectrum of the probe field and there exists slow light effect resulting in the great change of the refractive index. The numerical results indicate that with the different center-to-center distance between the two nanopaticles the slow light effects are greatly modified in terms of exciton-plasmon couplings.

The many-body state of carriers confined in a quantum dot is controlled by the balance between their kinetic energy and their Coulomb correlation. In coupled quantum dots, both can be tuned by varying the inter-dot tunneling and interactions. Using a theoretical approach based on the diagonalization of the exact Hamiltonian, we show that transitions between different quantum phases can be induced through inter-dot coupling both for a system of few electrons (or holes) and for aggregates of electrons and holes. We discuss their manifestations in addition energy spectra (accessible through capacitance or transport experiments) and optical spectra.
We report the Coulomb mediated hybridization of excitonic states in an optically active, artificial quantum dot molecule. By probing the optical response of the artificial molecule as a function of the static electric field applied along the molecula r axis, we observe unexpected avoided level crossings that do not arise from the dominant single particle tunnel coupling. We identify a new few-particle coupling mechanism stemming from Coulomb interactions between different neutral exciton states. Such Coulomb resonances hybridize the exciton wave function over four different electron and hole single-particle orbitals. Comparisons of experimental observations with microscopic 8-band $k cdot p$ calculations taking into account a realistic quantum dot geometry show good agreement and reveal that the Coulomb resonances arise from broken symmetry in the artificial molecule.
Spin-flop transition (SFT) consists in a jump-like reversal of antiferromagnetic magnetic moments into a non-collinear state when the magnetic field increases above the critical value. Potentially the SFT can be utilized in many applications of a rap idly developing antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, the difficulty of using them in conventional antiferromagnets lies in (a) too large switching magnetic fields (b) the need for presence of a magnetic anisotropy, and (c) requirement to apply magnetic field along the correspondent anisotropy axis. In this work we propose to use artificial ferrimagnets in which the spin-flop transition occurs without anisotropy and the transition field can be lowered by adjusting exchange coupling in the structure. This is proved by experiment on artificial Fe-Gd ferrimagnets where usage of Pd spacers allowed us to suppress the transition field by two orders of magnitude.
We study the magnetic field induced singlet/triplet transition for two electrons in vertically coupled quantum dots by exact diagonalization of the Coulomb interaction. We identify the different mechanisms occurring in the transition, involving eithe r in-plane correlations or localization in opposite dots, depending on the field direction. Therefore, both spin and orbital degrees of freedom can be manipulated by field strength and direction. The phase diagram of realistic devices is determined.
We investigate sequential tunneling through a multilevel quantum dot confining multiple electrons, in the regime where several channels are available for transport within the bias window. By analyzing solutions to the master equations of the reduced density matrix, we give general conditions on when the presence of a second transport channel in the bias window quenches transport through the quantum dot. These conditions are in terms of distinct tunneling anisotropies which may aid in explaining the occurrence of negative differential conductance in quantum dots in the nonlinear regime.
