Using the Lanczos exact-diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods, we study the extended Hubbard model at quarter filling defined on the anisotropic triangular lattice. We focus on charge ordering (CO) phenomena induced by onsite and intersite Coulomb interactions. We determine the ground-state phase diagram including three CO phases, i.e., diagonal, vertical, and three-fold CO phases, based on the calculated results of the hole density and double occupancy. We also calculate the dynamical density-density correlation functions and find possible coexistence of the diagonal and three-fold charge fluctuations in a certain parameter region where the onsite and intersite interactions compete. Furthermore, the characteristic features of the optical conductivity for each CO phase are discussed.

The critical cooling rate $R_{rm c}$ above which charge ordering is kinetically avoided upon cooling, which results in charge-glass formation, was investigated for the geometrically frustrated system $theta$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$. X-ray diffraction experim ents revealed that $theta$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$TlCo(SCN)$_4$ exhibits a horizontally charge-ordered state, and kinetic avoidance of this state requires rapid cooling of faster than 150 K/min. This value is markedly higher than that reported for two other isostructural $theta$-type compounds, thus demonstrating the lower charge-glass-forming ability of $X$ $=$ TlCo(SCN)$_4$. In accounting for the systematic variations of $R_{rm c}$ among the three $theta$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$, we found that stronger charge frustration leads to superior charge-glass former. Our results suggest that charge frustration tends to slow the kinetics of charge ordering.
We perform magnetic susceptibility and magnetic torque measurements on the organic $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Br, which is recently suggested to host an exotic quantum dipole-liquid in its low-temperature insulating phase. Below the metal-insul ator transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility follows a Curie-Weiss law with a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and a particular $Mpropto sqrt{H}$ curve is observed. The emergent ferromagnetically interacting spins amount to about 1/6 of the full spin moment of localized charges. Taking account of the possible inhomogeneous quasi-charge-order that forms a dipole-liquid, we construct a model of antiferromagnetically interacting spin chains in two adjacent charge-ordered domains, which are coupled via fluctuating charges on a Mott-dimer at the boundary. We find that the charge fluctuations can draw a weak ferromagnetic moment out of the spin singlet domains.
The recently proposed multiferroic state of the charge-transfer salt {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl [P. Lunkenheimer et al., Nature Mater., vol. 11, pp. 755-758, Sept. 2012] has been studied by dc-conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and meas urements of the dielectric constant on various, differently prepared single crystals. In the majority of crystals we confirm the existence of an order-disorder-type ferroelectric state which coincides with antiferromagnetic order. This phenomenology rules out scenarios which consider an inhomogeneous, short-range-ordered ferroelectric state. Measurements of the dielectric constant and the magnetic susceptibility on the same crystals reveal that both transitions lie very close to each other or even collapse, indicating that both types of order are intimately coupled to each other. We address issues of the frequency dependence of the dielectric constant {epsilon} and the dielectric loss {epsilon} and discuss sample-to-sample variations.

We have in detail characterized the anisotropic charge response of the dimer Mott insulator $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$-Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ by dc conductivity, Hall effect and dielectric spectroscopy. At room temperature the Hall coefficient is positive and cl ose to the value expected from stoichiometry; the temperature behavior follows the dc resistivity $rho(T)$. Within the planes the dc conductivity is well described by variable-range hopping in two dimensions; this model, however, fails for the out-of-plane direction. An unusually broad in-plane dielectric relaxation is detected below about 60 K; it slows down much faster than the dc conductivity following an Arrhenius law. At around 17 K we can identify a pronounced dielectric anomaly concomitantly with anomalous features in the mean relaxation time and spectral broadening. The out-of-plane relaxation, on the other hand, shows a much weaker dielectric anomaly; it closely follows the temperature behavior of the respective dc resistivity. At lower temperatures, the dielectric constant becomes smaller both within and perpendicular to the planes; also the relaxation levels off. The observed behavior bears features of relaxor-like ferroelectricity. Because heterogeneities impede its long-range development, only a weak tunneling-like dynamics persists at low temperatures. We suggest that the random potential and domain structure gradually emerge due to the coupling to the anion network.
A detailed investigation of the out-of-plane electrical properties of charge-ordered alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 provides clear evidence for ferroelectricity. Similar to multiferroic alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl, the polar order in this material is ascribed to the occurrence of bond- and site-centered charge order. Dielectric response typical for relaxor ferroelectricity is found deep in the charge-ordered state. We suggest an explanation in terms of the existence of polar and nonpolar stacks of the organic molecules in this material, preventing long-range ferroelectricity. The results are discussed in relation to the formation or absence of electronic polar order in related charge-transfer salts.
