Given a geodesic inside a simply-connected, complete, non-positively curved Riemannian (NPCR) manifold M, we get an associated geodesic inside the asymptotic cone Cone(M). Under mild hypotheses, we show that if the latter is contained inside a bi-Lipschitz flat, then the original geodesic supports a non-trivial, orthogonal, parallel Jacobi field. As applications we obtain (1) constraints on the behavior of quasi-isometries between complete, simply connected, NPCR manifolds, and (2) constraints on the NPCR metrics supported by certain manifolds, and (3) a correspondence between metric splittings of complete, simply connected NPCR manifolds, and metric splittings of its asymptotic cones. Furthermore, combining our results with the Ballmann-Burns-Spatzier rigidity theorem and the classic Mostow rigidity, we also obtain (4) a new proof of Gromovs rigidity theorem for higher rank locally symmetric spaces.

Kirigami is the art of cutting paper to make it articulated and deployable, allowing for it to be shaped into complex two and three-dimensional geometries. The mechanical response of a kirigami sheet when it is pulled at its ends is enabled and limit ed by the presence of cuts that serve to guide the possible non-planar deformations. Inspired by the geometry of this art form, we ask two questions: (i) What is the shortest path between points at which forces are applied? (ii) What is the nature of the ultimate shape of the sheet when it is strongly stretched? Mathematically, these questions are related to the nature and form of geodesics in the Euclidean plane with linear obstructions (cuts), and the nature and form of isometric immersions of the sheet with cuts when it can be folded on itself. We provide a constructive proof that the geodesic connecting any two points in the plane is piecewise polygonal. We then prove that the family of polygonal geodesics can be simultaneously rectified into a straight line by flat-folding the sheet so that its configuration is a (non-unique) piecewise affine planar isometric immersion.

We prove that the geodesic equation for any semi-Riemannian metric of regularity $C^{0,1}$ possesses $C^1$-solutions in the sense of Filippov.

We define and give explicit construction of the universal tree-graded space with a given collection of pieces. We apply that to proving uniqueness of asymptotic cones of relatively hyperbolic groups whose peripheral subgroups have unique asymptotic c ones. Modulo the Continuum Hypothesis, we show that if an asymptotic cone of a geodesic metric space is homogeneous and has cut points, then it is the universal tree-graded space with pieces - maximal connected subsets without their own cut points. Thus it is completely determined by its collection of pieces.
In 1997, J. Jost [27] and F. H. Lin [39], independently proved that every energy minimizing harmonic map from an Alexandrov space with curvature bounded from below to an Alexandrov space with non-positive curvature is locally Holder continuous. In [3 9], F. H. Lin proposed a challenge problem: Can the Holder continuity be improved to Lipschitz continuity? J. Jost also asked a similar problem about Lipschitz regularity of harmonic maps between singular spaces (see Page 38 in [28]). The main theorem of this paper gives a complete resolution to it.
This note is concerned with the geometric classification of connected Lie groups of dimension three or less, endowed with left-invariant Riemannian metrics. On the one hand, assembling results from the literature, we give a review of the complete cla ssification of such groups up to quasi-isometries and we compare the quasi-isometric classification with the bi-Lipschitz classification. On the other hand, we study the problem whether two quasi-isometrically equivalent Lie groups may be made isometric if equipped with suitable left-invariant Riemannian metrics. We show that this is the case for three-dimensional simply connected groups, but it is not true in general for multiply connected groups. The counterexample also demonstrates that `may be made isometric is not a transitive relation.
