State estimation is necessary in diagnosing anomalies in Water Demand Systems (WDS). In this paper we present a neural network performing such a task. State estimation is performed by using optimization, which tries to reconcile all the available information. Quantification of the uncertainty of the input data (telemetry measures and demand predictions) can be achieved by means of robust estate estimation. Using a mathematical model of the network, fuzzy estimated states for anomalous states of the network can be obtained. They are used to train a neural network capable of assessing WDS anomalies associated with particular sets of measurements.

Estimation-of-distribution algorithms (EDAs) are general metaheuristics used in optimization that represent a more recent alternative to classical approaches like evolutionary algorithms. In a nutshell, EDAs typically do not directly evolve populatio ns of search points but build probabilistic models of promising solutions by repeatedly sampling and selecting points from the underlying search space. Recently, there has been made significant progress in the theoretical understanding of EDAs. This article provides an up-to-date overview of the most commonly analyzed EDAs and the most recent theoretical results in this area. In particular, emphasis is put on the runtime analysis of simple univariate EDAs, including a description of typical benchmark functions and tools for the analysis. Along the way, open problems and directions for future research are described.
Estimation-of-distribution algorithms (EDAs) are randomized search heuristics that create a probabilistic model of the solution space, which is updated iteratively, based on the quality of the solutions sampled according to the model. As previous wor ks show, this iteration-based perspective can lead to erratic updates of the model, in particular, to bit-frequencies approaching a random boundary value. In order to overcome this problem, we propose a new EDA based on the classic compact genetic algorithm (cGA) that takes into account a longer history of samples and updates its model only with respect to information which it classifies as statistically significant. We prove that this significance-based compact genetic algorithm (sig-cGA) optimizes the commonly regarded benchmark functions OneMax, LeadingOnes, and BinVal all in quasilinear time, a result shown for no other EDA or evolutionary algorithm so far. For the recently proposed scGA -- an EDA that tries to prevent erratic model updates by imposing a bias to the uniformly distributed model -- we prove that it optimizes OneMax only in a time exponential in its hypothetical population size. Similarly, we show that the convex search algorithm cannot optimize OneMax in polynomial time.
The aim of this work is studying the use of copulas and vines in the optimization with Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs). Two EDAs are built around the multivariate product and normal copulas, and other two are based on pair-copula decompo sition of vine models. Empirically we study the effect of both marginal distributions and dependence structure separately, and show that both aspects play a crucial role in the success of the optimization. The results show that the use of copulas and vines opens new opportunities to a more appropriate modeling of search distributions in EDAs.

Schedules can be built in a similar way to a human scheduler by using a set of rules that involve domain knowledge. This paper presents an Estimation of Distribution Algorithm (eda) for the nurse scheduling problem, which involves choosing a suitable scheduling rule from a set for the assignment of each nurse. Unlike previous work that used Genetic Algorithms (ga) to implement implicit learning, the learning in the proposed algorithm is explicit, i.e. we identify and mix building blocks directly. The eda is applied to implement such explicit learning by building a Bayesian network of the joint distribution of solutions. The conditional probability of each variable in the network is computed according to an initial set of promising solutions. Subsequently, each new instance for each variable is generated by using the corresponding conditional probabilities, until all variables have been generated, i.e. in our case, a new rule string has been obtained. Another set of rule strings will be generated in this way, some of which will replace previous strings based on fitness selection. If stopping conditions are not met, the conditional probabilities for all nodes in the Bayesian network are updated again using the current set of promising rule strings. Computational results from 52 real data instances demonstrate the success of this approach. It is also suggested that the learning mechanism in the proposed approach might be suitable for other scheduling problems.
Application of the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithm to design of water distribution systems is described. An earlier MOPSO algorithm is augmented with (a) local search, (b) a modified strategy for assigning the leader, an d (c) a modified mutation scheme. For one of the benchmark problems described in the literature, the effect of each of the above features on the algorithm performance is demonstrated. The augmented MOPSO algorithm (called MOPSO+) is applied to five benchmark problems, and in each case, it finds non-dominated solutions not reported earlier. In addition, for the purpose of comparing Pareto fronts (sets of non-dominated solutions) obtained by different algorithms, a new criterion is suggested, and its usefulness is pointed out with an example. Finally, some suggestions regarding future research directions are made.
