We describe a finite-volume method for solving the Poisson equation on oct-tree adaptive meshes using direct solvers for individual mesh blocks. The method is a modified version of the method presented by Huang and Greengard (2000), which works with finite-difference meshes and does not allow for shared boundaries between refined patches. Our algorithm is implemented within the FLASH code framework and makes use of the PARAMESH library, permitting efficient use of parallel computers. We describe the algorithm and present test results that demonstrate its accuracy.

In this work we formally derive and prove the correctness of the algorithms and data structures in a parallel, distributed-memory, generic finite element framework that supports h-adaptivity on computational domains represented as forest-of-trees. Th e framework is grounded on a rich representation of the adaptive mesh suitable for generic finite elements that is built on top of a low-level, light-weight forest-of-trees data structure handled by a specialized, highly parallel adaptive meshing engine, for which we have identified the requirements it must fulfill to be coupled into our framework. Atop this two-layered mesh representation, we build the rest of data structures required for the numerical integration and assembly of the discrete system of linear equations. We consider algorithms that are suitable for both subassembled and fully-assembled distributed data layouts of linear system matrices. The proposed framework has been implemented within the FEMPAR scientific software library, using p4est as a practical forest-of-octrees demonstrator. A strong scaling study of this implementation when applied to Poisson and Maxwell problems reveals remarkable scalability up to 32.2K CPU cores and 482.2M degrees of freedom. Besides, a comparative performance study of FEMPAR and the state-of-the-art deal.ii finite element software shows at least comparative performance, and at most factor 2-3 improvements in the h-adaptive approximation of a Poisson problem with first- and second-order Lagrangian finite elements, respectively.

We develop a nonlinear multigrid method to solve the steady state of microflow, which is modeled by the high order moment system derived recently for the steady-state Boltzmann equation with ES-BGK collision term. The solver adopts a symmetric Gauss- Seidel iterative scheme nested by a local Newton iteration on grid cell level as its smoother. Numerical examples show that the solver is insensitive to the parameters in the implementation thus is quite robust. It is demonstrated that expected efficiency improvement is achieved by the proposed method in comparison with the direct time-stepping scheme.
Resolving numerically Vlasov-Poisson equations for initially cold systems can be reduced to following the evolution of a three-dimensional sheet evolving in six-dimensional phase-space. We describe a public parallel numerical algorithm consisting in representing the phase-space sheet with a conforming, self-adaptive simplicial tessellation of which the vertices follow the Lagrangian equations of motion. The algorithm is implemented both in six- and four-dimensional phase-space. Refinement of the tessellation mesh is performed using the bisection method and a local representation of the phase-space sheet at second order relying on additional tracers created when needed at runtime. In order to preserve in the best way the Hamiltonian nature of the system, refinement is anisotropic and constrained by measurements of local Poincare invariants. Resolution of Poisson equation is performed using the fast Fourier method on a regular rectangular grid, similarly to particle in cells codes. To compute the density projected onto this grid, the intersection of the tessellation and the grid is calculated using the method of Franklin and Kankanhalli (1993) generalised to linear order. As preliminary tests of the code, we study in four dimensional phase-space the evolution of an initially small patch in a chaotic potential and the cosmological collapse of a fluctuation composed of two sinusoidal waves. We also perform a warm dark matter simulation in six-dimensional phase-space that we use to check the parallel scaling of the code.
We have developed an efficient algorithm for steady axisymmetrical 2D fluid equations. The algorithm employs multigrid method as well as standard implicit discretization schemes for systems of partial differential equations. Linearity of the multigri d method with respect to the number of grid points allowed us to use $256times 256$ grid, where we could achieve solutions in several minutes. Time limitations due to nonlinearity of the system are partially avoided by using multi level grids(the initial solution on $256times 256$ grid was extrapolated steady solution from $128times 128$ grid which allowed using long integration time steps). The fluid solver may be used as the basis for hybrid codes for DC discharges.
The computational study of chemical reactions in complex, wet environments is critical for applications in many fields. It is often essential to study chemical reactions in the presence of applied electrochemical potentials, taking into account the n on-trivial electrostatic screening coming from the solvent and the electrolytes. As a consequence the electrostatic potential has to be found by solving the generalized Poisson and the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for neutral and ionic solutions, respectively. In the present work solvers for both problems have been developed. A preconditioned conjugate gradient method has been implemented to the generalized Poisson equation and the linear regime of the Poisson-Boltzmann, allowing to solve iteratively the minimization problem with some ten iterations of a ordinary Poisson equation solver. In addition, a self-consistent procedure enables us to solve the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann problem. Both solvers exhibit very high accuracy and parallel efficiency, and allow for the treatment of different boundary conditions, as for example surface systems. The solver has been integrated into the BigDFT and Quantum-ESPRESSO electronic-structure packages and will be released as an independent program, suitable for integration in other codes.
