The ground-state phase properties of a two-dimensional Bose system with dipole-dipole interactions is studied by means of quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Limitations of mean-field theory in a two-dimensional geometry are discussed. A quantum phase transition from gas to solid is found. Crystal is tested for existence of a supersolid in the vicinity of the phase transition. Existence of mesoscopic analogue of the off-diagonal long-range order is shown in the one-body density matrix in a finite-size crystal. Non-zero superfluid fraction is found in a finite-size crystal, the signal being dramatically increased in presence of vacancies.

We investigate the physics of dipolar bosons in a two dimensional optical lattice. It is known that due to the long-range character of dipole-dipole interaction, the ground state phase diagram of a gas of dipolar bosons in an optical lattice presents novel quantum phases, like checkerboard and supersolid phases. In this paper, we consider the properties of the system beyond its ground state, finding that it is characterised by a multitude of almost degenerate metastable states, often competing with the ground state. This makes dipolar bosons in a lattice similar to a disordered system and opens possibilities of using them for quantum memories.
A quantum Monte Carlo simulation of a system of hard rods in one dimension is presented and discussed. The calculation is exact since the analytical form of the wavefunction is known, and is in excellent agreement with predictions obtained from asymp totic expansions valid at large distances. The analysis of the static structure factor and the pair distribution function indicates that a solid-like and a gas-like phases exist at high and low densities, respectively. The one-body density matrix decays following a power-law at large distances and produces a divergence in the low density momentum distribution at k=0 which can be identified as a quasi-condensate.

The competition between tunneling and interactions in bosonic lattice models generates a whole variety of different quantum phases. While, in the presence of a single species interacting via on-site interaction, the phase diagram presents only superf luid or Mott insulating phases, for long-range interactions or multiple species, exotic phases such as supersolid (SS) or pair-superfluid (PSF) appear. In this work, we show for the first time that the co-existence of effective multiple species and long-range interactions leads to the formation of a novel pair-supersolid (PSS) phase, namely a supersolid of composites. We propose a possible implementation with dipolar bosons in a bilayer two-dimensional optical lattice.
We consider a quantum impurity immersed in a dipolar Bose Einstein condensate and study the properties of the emerging polaron. We calculate the energy, effective mass and quasi-particle residue of the dipolar polaron and investigate their behaviour with respect to the strength of zero-range contact and a long-range dipolar interactions among the condensate atoms and with the impurity. While quantum fluctuations in the case of pure contact interactions typically lead to an increase of the polaron energy, dipole-dipole interactions are shown to cause a sign reversal. The described signatures of dipolar interactions are shown to be observable with current experimental capabilities based on quantum gases of atoms with large magnetic dipole moments such as Erbium or Dysprosium condensates.
We study the ground state phase diagram of ultracold dipolar gases in highly anisotropic traps. Starting from a one-dimensional geometry, by ramping down the transverse confinement along one direction, the gas reaches various planar distributions of dipoles. At large linear densities, when the dipolar gas exhibits a crystal-like phase, critical values of the transverse frequency exist below which the configuration exhibits novel transverse patterns. These critical values are found by means of a classical theory, and are in full agreement with classical Monte Carlo simulations. The study of the quantum system is performed numerically with Monte Carlo techniques and shows that the quantum fluctuations smoothen the transition and make it completely disappear in a gas phase. These predictions could be experimentally tested and would allow one to reveal the effect of zero-point motion on self-organized mesoscopic structures of matter waves, such as the transverse pattern of the zigzag chain.
