We show that the M-canonical map of an n-dimensional complex projective manifold X of Kodaira dimension two is birational to an Iitaka fibration for a computable positive integer M. M depends on the index b of a general fibre F of the Iitaka fibration and on the Betti number of the canonical covering of F, In particular, M is a universal constant if the dimension n is smaller than or equal to 4.

Kodaira fibred surfaces are a remarkable example of projective classifying spaces, and there are still many intriguing open questions concerning them, especially the slope question. The topological characterization of Kodaira fibrations is emblematic of the use of topological methods in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces and higher dimensional complex algebraic varieties, and their compactifications. The paper contains some new results but is mostly a survey paper, dealing with fibrations, questions on monodromy and factorizations in the mapping class group, old and new results on Variation of Hodge Structures, especially a recent answer given (in joint work with Dettweiler) to a long standing question posed by Fujita. In the landscape of our tour, Galois coverings, deformations and rigid manifolds (new results obtained with Ingrid Bauer) projective classifying spaces, the action of the absolute Galois group on moduli spaces, stand also in the forefront. These questions lead to interesting algebraic surfaces, for instance the BCDH surfaces, hypersurfaces in Bagnera-de Franchis varieties, Inoue-type surfaces.
We introduce a relative version of the spherical objects of Seidel and Thomas. Define an object E in the derived category D(Z x X) to be spherical over Z if the corresponding functor from D(Z) to D(X) gives rise to autoequivalences of D(Z) and D(X) i n a certain natural way. Most known examples come from subschemes of X fibred over Z. This categorifies to the notion of an object of D(Z x X) orthogonal over Z. We prove that such an object is spherical over Z if and only if it has certain cohomological properties similar to those in the original definition of a spherical object. We then interpret this geometrically in the case when our objects are actual flat fibrations in X over Z.
Under some positivity assumptions, extension properties of rationally connected fibrations from a submanifold to its ambient variety are studied. Given a family of rational curves on a complex projective manifold X inducing a covering family on a sub manifold Y with ample normal bundle in X, the main results relate, under suitable conditions, the associated rational connected fiber structures on X and on Y. Applications of these results include an extension theorem for Mori contractions of fiber type and a classification theorem in the case Y has a structure of projective bundle or quadric fibration.
We bound the slope of sweeping curves in the fourgonal locus of the moduli space of genus g algebraic curves. Our results follow from some Bogomolov-type inequalities for weakly positive rank two vector bundles on ruled surfaces.
Motivated by the study of rationally connected fibrations (and the MRC quotient) we study different notions of birationally simple fibrations. We say a fibration of smooth projective varieties is Chow constant if pushforward induces an isomorphism on the Chow group of 0-cycles. Likewise we say a fibration is cohomologically constant if pullback induces an isomorphism on holomorphic p-forms for all p. Our main result is the construction of maximal Chow constant and cohomologically constant fibrations. The paper is largely self contained and we prove a number of basic properties of these fibrations. One application is to the classification of rationalizations of singularities of cones. We also consider consequences for the Chow groups of the generic fiber of a Chow constant fibration.
