To investigate the formation mechanism of energy spectra of internal waves in the oceans, direct numerical simulations are performed. The simulations are based on the reduced dynamical equations of rotating stratified turbulence. In the reduced dynamical equations only wave modes are retained, and vortices and horizontally uniform vertical shears are excluded. Despite the simplifications, our simulations reproduce some key features of oceanic internal-wave spectra: accumulation of energy at near-inertial waves and realistic frequency and horizontal wavenumber dependencies. Furthermore, we provide evidence that formation of the energy spectra in the inertial subrange is dominated by scale-separated interactions with the near-inertial waves. These findings support oceanographers intuition that spectral energy density of internal waves is the result of predominantly wave-wave interactions.

Results of direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence of surface gravity waves in the framework of Hamiltonian equations are presented. For the first time simultaneous formation of both direct and inverse cascades was observed in the framewo rk of primordial dynamical equations. At the same time, strong long waves background was developed. It was shown, that obtained Kolmogorov spectra are very sensitive to the presence of this condensate. Such situation has to be typical for experimental wave tanks, flumes, and small lakes.
In this study we investigated the capabilities of the mesh-free, Lagrangian particle method (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, SPH) to simulate the detailed hydrodynamic processes generated by both spilling and plunging breaking waves within the surf zone. The weakly-compressible SPH code DualSPHysics was applied to simulate wave breaking over two distinct bathymetric profiles (a plane beach and fringing reef) and compared to experimental flume measurements of waves, flows, and mean water levels. Despite the simulations spanning very different wave breaking conditions (including an extreme case with violently plunging waves on an effectively dry reef slope), the model was able to reproduce a wide range of relevant surf zone hydrodynamic processes using a fixed set of numerical parameters. This included accurate predictions of the nonlinear evolution of wave shapes (e.g., asymmetry and skewness properties), rates of wave dissipation within the surf zone, and wave setup distributions. By using this mesh-free approach, the model was able to resolve the critical crest region within the breaking waves, which provided robust predictions of the wave-induced mass fluxes within the surf zone responsible for the undertow. Within this breaking crest region, the model results capture how the potential energy of the organized wave motion is initially converted to kinetic energy and then dissipated, which reproduces the distribution of wave forces responsible for wave setup generation across the surf zone. Overall, the results reveal how the mesh-free SPH approach can accurately reproduce the detailed wave breaking processes with comparable skill to state-of-the-art mesh-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, and thus can be applied to provide valuable new physical insight into surf zone dynamics.

In the paper taking the assumption of the slowness of the change of the parameters of the vertically stratified medium in the horizontal direction and in time, the evolution of the non-harmonic wave packages of the internal gravity waves has been ana lyzed. The concrete form of the wave packages can be expressed through some model functions and is defined by the local behavior of the dispersive curves of the separate modes near to the corresponding special points. The solution of this problem is possible with the help of the modified variant of the special-time ray method offered by the authors (the method of geometrical optics), the basic difference of which consists that the asymptotic representation of the solution may be found in the form the series of the non-integer degrees of some small parameter. At that the exponent depends on the concrete form of representation of this package. The obvious kind of the representation is determined from the principle of the localness and the asymptotic behavior of the solution in the stationary and the horizontally-homogeneous case. The phases of the wave packages are determined from the corresponding equations of the eikonal, which can be solved numerically on the characteristics (rays). Amplitudes of the wave packages are determined from the laws of conservation of the some invariants along the characteristics (rays).

The large-scale structures in the ocean and the atmosphere are in geostrophic balance, and a conduit must be found to channel the energy to the small scales where it can be dissipated. In turbulence this takes the form of an energy cascade, whereas o ne possible mechanism in a balanced flow at large scales is through the formation of fronts, a common occurrence in geophysical dynamics. We show in this paper that an iconic configuration in laboratory and numerical experiments for the study of turbulence, that of the Taylor-Green or von Karman swirling flow, can be suitably adapted to the case of fluids with large aspect ratios, leading to the creation of an imposed large-scale vertical shear. To this effect we use direct numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations without net rotation and with no small-scale modeling, and with this idealized Taylor-Green set-up. Various grid spacings are used, up to $2048^2times 256$ spatial points. The grids are always isotropic, with box aspect ratios of either $1:4$ or $1:8$. We find that when shear and stratification are comparable, the imposed shear layer resulting from the forcing leads to the formation of multiple fronts and filaments which destabilize and further evolve into a turbulent flow in the bulk, with a sizable amount of dissipation and mixing, and with a cycle of front creation, instability, and development of turbulence. The results depend on the vertical length scales for shear and for stratification, with stronger large-scale gradients being generated when the two length scales are comparable.

Via a sequence of approximations of the Lagrangian in Hamiltons principle for dispersive nonlinear gravity waves we derive a hierarchy of Hamiltonian models for describing wave-current interaction (WCI) in nonlinear dispersive wave dynamics on free s urfaces. A subclass of these WCI Hamiltonians admits emph{emergent singular solutions} for certain initial conditions. These singular solutions are identified with a singular momentum map for left action of the diffeomorphisms on a semidirect-product Lie algebra. This semidirect-product Lie algebra comprises vector fields representing horizontal current velocity acting on scalar functions representing wave elevation. We use computational simulations to demonstrate the dynamical interactions of the emergent wavefront trains which are admitted by this special subclass of Hamiltonians for a variety of initial conditions. In particular, we investigate: (1) A variety of localised initial current configurations in still water whose subsequent propagation generates surface-elevation dynamics on an initially flat surface; and (2) The release of initially confined configurations of surface elevation in still water that generate dynamically interacting fronts of localised currents and wave trains. The results of these simulations show intricate wave-current interaction patterns whose structures are similar to those seen, for example, in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images taken from the space shuttle.
