Report is made of a systematic scaling study of the finite-temperature chiral phase transition of two-flavor QCD with the Kogut-Susskind quark action based on simulations on $L^3times4$ ($L$=8, 12 and 16) lattices at the quark mass of $m_q=0.075, 0.0375, 0.02$ and 0.01. Our finite-size data show that a phase transition is absent for $m_qgeq 0.02$, and quite likely also at $m_q=0.01$. The scaling behavior of susceptibilities as a function of $m_q$ is consistent with a second-order transition at $m_q=0$. However, the exponents deviate from the O(2) or O(4) values theoretically expected.

Improved lattice actions for Kogut-Susskind quarks have been shown to improve rotational symmetry and flavor symmetry. In this work we find improved scaling behavior of the rho and nucleon masses expressed in units of a length scale obtained from the static quark potential, and better behavior of the Dirac operator in instanton backgrounds.
We present a non-perturbative calculation for the pion decay constant with quenched Kogut-Susskind quarks. Numerical simulations are carried out at $beta = 6.0$ and 6.2 with various operators extending over all flavors. The renormalization correction is applied for each flavor by computing non-perturbative renormalization constants, and it is compared with a perturbative calculation. We also study the behavior of $f_pi$ in the continuum limits for both non-perturbative and perturbative calculations. The results in the continuum limit is also discussed.
In preparation of lattice studies of the two-color QCD phase diagram we study chiral restoration and deconfinement at finite temperature with two flavors of staggered quarks using an RHMC algorithm on GPUs. We first study unquenching effects in local Polyakov loop distributions, and the Polyakov loop potential obtained via Legendre transformation, in a fixed-scale approach for heavier quarks. We also present the chiral condensate and the corresponding susceptibility over the lattice coupling across the chiral transition for lighter quarks. Using Ferrenberg-Swendsen reweighting we extract the maxima of the chiral susceptibility in order to determine pseudo-critical couplings on various lattices suitable for chiral extrapolations. These are then used to fix the relation between coupling and temperature in the chiral limit.
Attempts to extract the order of the chiral transition of QCD at zero chemical potential, with two dynamical flavors of massless quarks, from simulations with progressively decreasing pion mass have remained inconclusive because of their increasing numerical cost. In an alternative approach to this problem, we consider the path integral as a function of continuous number $N_text{f}$ of degenerate quarks. If the transition in the chiral limit is first-order for $N_text{f} ge 3$, a second-order transition for $N_text{f}=2$ then requires a tricritical point in between. This in turn implies tricritical scaling of the critical boundary line between the first-order and crossover regions as the chiral limit is approached. Non-integer numbers of fermion flavors are easily implemented within the staggered fermion discretization. Exploratory simulations at $mu=0$ and $N_text{f} = 2.8, 2.6, 2.4, 2.2, 2.1$, on coarse $N_tau = 4$ lattices, indeed show a smooth variation of the critical mass mapping out a critical line in the $(m,N_text{f})$-plane. For the smallest masses the line appears consistent with tricritical scaling, allowing for an extrapolation to the chiral limit.
We report on our study of two-flavor full QCD on anisotropic lattices using $O(a)$-improved Wilson quarks coupled with an RG-improved glue. The bare gauge and quark anisotropies corresponding to the renormalized anisotropy $xi=a_s/a_t = 2$ are determined as functions of $beta$ and $kappa$, which covers the region of spatial lattice spacings $a_sapprox 0.28$--0.16 fm and $m_{PS}/m_Vapprox 0.6$--0.9. The calibrations of the bare anisotropies are performed with the Wilson loop and the meson dispersion relation at 4 lattice cutoffs and 5--6 quark masses. Using the calibration results we calculate the meson mass spectrum and the Sommer scale $r_0$. We confirm that the values of $r_0$ calculated for the calibration using pseudo scalar and vector meson energy momentum dispersion relation coincide in the continuum limit within errors. This work serves to lay ground toward studies of heavy quark systems and thermodynamics of QCD including the extraction of the equation of state in the continuum limit using Wilson-type quark actions.
