We reveal a novel regime of photon-pair generation driven by the interplay of multiple bound states in the continuum resonances in nonlinear metasurfaces. This non-degenerate photon-pair generation is derived from the hyperbolic topology of the transverse phase-matching and can enable orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the photon rate and spectral brightness, as compared to the degenerate regime. We show that the entanglement of the photon-pairs can be tuned by varying the pump polarization, which can underpin future advances and applications of ultra-compact quantum light sources.
Nonlinear metasurfaces offer new paradigm for boosting optical effect beyond limitations of conventional materials. In this work, we present an alternative way to produce pronounced third-harmonic generation (THG) based on nonlinear field resonances rather than linear field enhancement, which is a typical strategy for achieving strong nonlinear response. By designing and studying a nonlinear plasmonic-graphene metasurface at terahertz regime with hybrid guided modes and bound states in the continuum modes, it is found that a THG with a narrow bandwidth can be observed, thanks to the strong resonance between generated weak THG field and these modes. Such strong nonlinear field resonance greatly enhances the photon-photon interactions, thus resulting in a large effective nonlinear coefficient of the whole system. This finding provides new opportunity for studying nonlinear optical metasurfaces.
We propose and theoretically analyze a new scheme for generating hyper-entangled photon pairs in a system of polaritons in coupled planar microcavities. Starting from a microscopic model, we evaluate the relevant parametric scattering processes and numerically simulate the phonon-induced noise background under continuous-wave excitation. Our results show that, compared to other polariton entanglement proposals, our scheme enables the generation of photon pairs that are entangled in both path and polarization degrees of freedom, and simultaneously leads to a strong reduction of the photoluminesence noise background. This can significantly improve the fidelity of the entangled photon pairs under realistic experimental conditions.
Subwavelength dielectric resonators assembled into metasurfaces have become versatile tools to miniaturise optical components towards the nanoscale. An important class of such functionalities is associated with asymmetries in both generation and propagation of light with respect to reversals of the positions of transmitters and receivers. A promising pathway towards miniaturisation of asymmetric light control is via nonlinear light-matter interactions. Here we demonstrate asymmetric parametric generation of light at the level of individual subwavelength resonators. We assemble thousands of dissimilar nonlinear dielectric resonators into translucent metasurfaces that produce images in the visible spectral range when illuminated by infrared radiation. By design, these nonlinear metasurfaces produce different and completely independent images for the reversed directions of illumination, that is when the positions of the infrared transmitter and the visible light receiver are exchanged. Nonlinearity-enabled asymmetric control of light at the level of individual subwavelength resonators opens an untapped potential for developing novel nanophotonic components via dense integration of large quantities of nonlinear resonators into compact metasurfaces.
We demonstrate that an integrated silicon microring resonator is capable of efficiently producing photon pairs that are completely unentangled; such pairs are a key component of heralded single photon sources. A dual-channel interferometric coupling scheme can be used to independently tune the quality factors associated with the pump and signal and idler modes, yielding a biphoton wavefunction with Schmidt number arbitrarily close to unity. This will permit the generation of heralded single photon states with unit purity.
Light shaping facilitates the preparation and detection of optical states and underlies many applications in communications, computing, and imaging. In this Letter, we generalize light shaping to the quantum domain. We show that patterns of phase modulation for classical laser light can also shape higher orders of spatial coherence, allowing deterministic tailoring of high-dimensional quantum entanglement. By modulating spatially entangled photon pairs, we create periodic, topological, and random patterns of quantum illumination, without effect on intensity. We then structure the quantum illumination to simultaneously compensate for entanglement that has been randomized by a scattering medium and to characterize the mediums properties via a quantum measurement of the optical memory effect. The results demonstrate fundamental aspects of spatial coherence and open the field of adaptive quantum optics.
