We consider Internet of Things (IoT) organized on the principles of cell-free massive MIMO. Since the number of things is very large, orthogonal pilots cannot be assigned to all of them even if the things are stationary. This results in an unavoidable pilot contamination problem, worsened by the fact that, for IoT, since the things are operating at very low transmit power. To mitigate this problem and achieve a high throughput, we use cell-free systems with optimal linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) channel estimation, while traditionally simple suboptimal estimators have been used in such systems. We further derive the analytical uplink and downlink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) expressions for this scenario, which depends only on large scale fading coefficients. This allows us to design new power control algorithms that require only infrequent transmit power adaptation. Simulation results show a 40% improvement in uplink and downlink throughputs and 95% in energy efficiency over existing cell-free wireless systems and at least a three-fold uplink improvement over known IoT systems based on small-cell systems.

This letter shows that optimizing the transmit powers along with optimally designed nonorthogonal pilots can significantly reduce pilot contamination and improve the overall throughput of the uplink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system as compared to the conventional schemes that use orthogonal pilots. Given the optimized nonorthogonal pilots, power control as a function of the large-scale path-loss can be thought of as a stochastic optimization problem due to the presence of fast fading. This paper advocates a deterministic approach to solve this problem, then further proposes a stochastic optimization method that utilizes successive convex approximation as a benchmark to quantify the performance of the proposed approach. Simulation results reveal significant advantage of using optimized nonorthogonal pilots together with power control to combat pilot contamination.
We propose a novel joint activity, channel, and data estimation (JACDE) scheme for cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems compliant with fifth-generation (5G) new radio (NR) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signaling. The contribution aims to allow significant overhead reduction of cell-free MIMO systems by enabling grant-free access, while maintaining moderate throughput per user. To that end, we extend the conventional MIMO OFDM protocol so as to incorporate activity detection capability without resorting to spreading informative data symbols, in contrast with related work which typically relies on signal spreading. Our method leverages a Bayesian message passing scheme based on Gaussian approximation, which jointly performs active user detection (AUD), channel estimation (CE), and multi-user detection (MUD), incorporating also a well-structured low-coherent pilot design based on frame theory, which mitigates pilot contamination, and finally complemented with a detector empowered by bilinear message passing. The efficacy of the resulting JACDE-based grant-free access scheme without spreading data sequences is demonstrated by simulation results, which are shown to significantly outperform the current state-of-the-art and approach the performance of an idealized (genie-aided) scheme in which user activity and channel coefficients are perfectly known.
Next generation wireless base stations and access points will transmit and receive using extremely massive numbers of antennas. A promising technology for realizing such massive arrays in a dynamically controllable and scalable manner with reduced cost and power consumption utilizes surfaces of radiating metamaterial elements, known as metasurfaces. To date, metasurfaces are mainly considered in the context of wireless communications as passive reflecting devices, aiding conventional transceivers in shaping the propagation environment. This article presents an alternative application of metasurfaces for wireless communications as active reconfigurable antennas with advanced analog signal processing capabilities for next generation transceivers. We review the main characteristics of metasurfaces used for radiation and reception, and analyze their main advantages as well as their effect on the ability to reliably communicate in wireless networks. As current studies unveil only a portion of the potential of metasurfaces, we detail a list of exciting research and implementation challenges which arise from the application of metasurface antennas for wireless transceivers.

Subspace methods are essential to high-resolution environment sensing in the emerging unmanned systems, if further combined with the millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technique. The estimation of signal/noise subspace, as one critical step, is yet computationally complex and presents a particular challenge when developing high-resolution yet low-complexity automotive radars. In this work, we develop a fast randomized-MUSIC (R-MUSIC) algorithm, which exploits the random matrix sketching to estimate the signal subspace via approximated computation. Our new approach substantially reduces the time complexity in acquiring a high-quality signal subspace. Moreover, the accuracy of R-MUSIC suffers no degradation unlike others low-complexity counterparts, i.e. the high-resolution angle of arrival (AoA) estimation is attained. Numerical simulations are provided to validate the performance of our R-MUSIC method. As shown, it resolves the long-standing contradiction in complexity and accuracy of MIMO radar signal processing, which hence have great potentials in real-time super-resolution automotive sensing.

In this paper, a framework of beamspace channel estimation in millimeter wave (mmWave) massive MIMO system is proposed. The framework includes the design of hybrid precoding and combining matrix as well as the search method for the largest entry of over-sampled beamspace receiving matrix. Then based on the framework, three channel estimation schemes including identity matrix approximation (IA)-based scheme, scattered zero off-diagonal (SZO)-based scheme and concentrated zero off-diagonal (CZO)-based scheme are proposed. These schemes together with the existing channel estimation schemes are compared in terms of computational complexity, estimation error and total time slots for channel training. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes outperform the existing schemes and can approach the performance of the ideal case. In particular, total time slots for channel training can be substantially reduced.
