We present a framework for nonlinearly coupled scalar-tensor theory of gravity to address both inflation and core-collapse supernova problems. The unified approach is based on a novel dynamical trapping and relaxation of scalar gravity in highly energetic regimes. The new model provides a viable alternative mechanism of inflation free from various issues known to affect previous proposals. Furthermore, it could be related to observable violent astronomical events, specifically by releasing a significant amount of additional gravitational energy during core-collapse supernovae. A recent experiment at CERN relevant for testing this new model is briefly outlined.

Numerical simulations are performed of a test scalar field in a spacetime undergoing gravitational collapse. The behavior of the scalar field near the singularity is examined and implications for generic singularities are discussed. In particular, our example is the first confirmation of the BKL conjecture for an asymptotically flat spacetime.
We investigate linear and non-linear dynamics of spherically symmetric perturbations on a static configuration in scalar-tensor theories focusing on the chameleon screening mechanism. We particularly address two questions: how much the perturbations can source the fifth force when the static background is well screened, and whether the resultant fifth force can change the stability and structure of the background configuration. For linear perturbations, we derive a lower bound for the square of the Fourier mode frequency $omega^2$ using the adiabatic approximation. There may be unstable modes if this lower bound is negative, and we find that the condition of the instability can be changed by the fifth force although this effect is suppressed by the screening parameter. For non-linear perturbations, because we are mainly interested in short wavelength modes for which the fifth force may become stronger, we perform numerical simulations under the planar approximation. For a sufficiently large initial amplitude of the density perturbation, we find that the magnitude of the fifth force can be comparable to that of Newtonian gravity even when the model parameters are chosen so that the static background is well screened. It is also shown that if the screening is effective for the static background, the fluid dynamics is mostly governed by the pressure gradient and is not significantly affected by the fifth force.
We consider the existence of an inflaton described by an homogeneous scalar field in the Szekeres cosmological metric. The gravitational field equations are reduced to two families of solutions which describe the homogeneous Kantowski-Sachs spacetime and an inhomogeneous FLRW(-like) spacetime with spatial curvature a constant. The main differences with the original Szekeres spacetimes containing only pressure-free matter are discussed. We investigate the stability of the two families of solution by studying the critical points of the field equations. We find that there exist stable solutions which describe accelerating spatially-flat FLRW geometries.

The direct detection of gravitational waves (GWs) is an invaluable new tool to probe gravity and the nature of cosmic acceleration. A large class of scalar-tensor theories predict that GWs propagate with velocity different than the speed of light, a difference that can be $mathcal{O}(1)$ for many models of dark energy. We determine the conditions behind the anomalous GW speed, namely that the scalar field spontaneously breaks Lorentz invariance and couples to the metric perturbations via the Weyl tensor. If these conditions are realized in nature, the delay between GW and electromagnetic (EM) signals from distant events will run beyond human timescales, making it impossible to measure the speed of GWs using neutron star mergers or other violent events. We present a robust strategy to exclude or confirm an anomalous speed of GWs using eclipsing binary systems, whose EM phase can be exquisitely determined. he white dwarf binary J0651+2844 is a known example of such system that can be used to probe deviations in the GW speed as small as $c_g/c-1gtrsim 2cdot 10^{-12}$ when LISA comes online. This test will either eliminate many contender models for cosmic acceleration or wreck a fundamental pillar of general relativity.

In Eddington gravity, the action principle involves only the symmetric parts of the connection and the Ricci tensor, with a metric that emerges proportionally to the latter. Here, we relax this symmetric character, prolong the action with the antisymmetric parts of the Ricci term, and allow for various couplings with scalar fields. We propose two possible invariant actions formed by distinct combinations of the independent Ricci tensors and show that the generated metric must involve an additional antisymmetric part due to the relaxation of the symmetrization property. The comprehensive study shows that the second curvature influences the dynamics of the connection, hence its solution in terms of the metric, and the evolution of the scalar fields. These new dynamical features are expected to stand viable and to have interesting implications in domains where scalar fields are indispensable.
