Sensors placed in agricultural field should have long network life. Failure of node or link allows rerouting and establishing a new path from the source to the sink. In this paper, a new path is established such that it is energy aware during path discovery and is active for longer interval of time once it is established. The parameters used for simulation are as those used in agricultural application.

Path-aware networks (PANs) are emerging as an intriguing new paradigm with the potential to significantly improve the dependability and efficiency of networks. However, the benefits of PANs can only be realized if the adoption of such architectures is economically viable. This paper shows that PANs enable novel interconnection agreements among autonomous systems, which allow to considerably improve both economic profits and path diversity compared to todays Internet. Specifically, by supporting packet forwarding along a path selected by the packet source, PANs do not require the Gao-Rexford conditions to ensure stability. Hence, autonomous systems can establish novel agreements, creating new paths which demonstrably improve latency and bandwidth metrics in many cases. This paper also expounds two methods to set up agreements which are Pareto-optimal, fair, and thus attractive to both parties. We further present a bargaining mechanism that allows two parties to efficiently automate agreement negotiations.

The underwater acoustic channel is one of the most challenging communication channels. Due to periodical tidal and daily climatic variation, underwater noise is periodically fluctuating, which result in the periodical changing of acoustic channel quality in long-term. Also, time-variant channel quality leads to routing failure. Routing protocols with acoustic channel estimation, namely underwater channel-aware routing protocols are recently proposed to maintain the routing performance. However, channel estimation algorithms for these routing protocols are mostly linear and rarely consider periodicity of acoustic channels. In this paper, we introduce acoustic channel estimation based on nearest neighbor regression for underwater acoustic networks. We extend nearest neighbor regression for SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) time series prediction, providing an outstanding prediction accuracy for intricately periodical and fluctuating received SNR time series. Moreover, we propose a quick search algorithm and use statistical storage compression to optimize the time and space complexity of the algorithm. In contrast with linear methods, this algorithm significantly improves channel prediction accuracy (over three times at most) on both simulation and sea trial data sets. With this channel estimation method, we then propose a Depth-Based Channel-Aware Routing protocol (DBCAR). Taking advantage of depth-greedy forwarding and channel-aware reliable communication, DBCAR has an outstanding network performance on packet delivery ratio, average energy consumption and average transmission delay which is validated through extensive simulations.

For stationary wireless ad hoc networks, one of the key challenging issues in routing and multicasting is to conserve as much energy as possible without compromising path efficiency measured as end-to-end delay. In this paper, we address the problem of path efficient and energy aware multicasting in static wireless ad hoc networks. We propose a novel distributed scalable algorithm for finding a virtual multicast backbone (VMB). Based on this VMB, we have further developed a multicasting scheme that jointly improves path efficiency and energy conservation. By exploiting inherent broadcast advantage of wireless communication and employing a more realistic energy consumption model for wireless communication which not only depends on radio propagation losses but also on energy losses in transceiver circuitry, our simulation results show that the proposed VMB-based multicasting scheme outperforms existing prominent tree based energy conserving, path efficient multicasting schemes.
Recently, Multipath TCP (MPTCP) has been proposed as an alternative transport approach for datacenter networks. MPTCP provides the ability to split a flow into multiple paths thus providing better performance and resilience to failures. Usually, MPTCP is combined with flow-based Equal-Cost Multi-Path Routing (ECMP), which uses random hashing to split the MPTCP subflows over different paths. However, random hashing can be suboptimal as distinct subflows may end up using the same paths, while other available paths remain unutilized. In this paper, we explore an MPTCP-aware SDN controller that facilitates an alternative routing mechanism for the MPTCP subflows. The controller uses packet inspection to provide deterministic subflow assignment to paths. Using the controller, we show that MPTCP can deliver significantly improved performance when connections are not limited by the access links of hosts. To lessen the effect of throughput limitation due to access links, we also investigate the usage of multiple interfaces at the hosts. We demonstrate, using our modification of the MPTCP Linux Kernel, that using multiple subflows per pair of IP addresses can yield improved performance in multi-interface settings.
Decades of continuous scaling has reduced the energy of unit computing to virtually zero, while energy-efficient communication has remained the primary bottleneck in achieving fully energy-autonomous IoT nodes. This paper presents and analyzes the trade-offs between the energies required for communication and computation in a wireless sensor network, deployed in a mesh architecture over a 2400-acre university campus, and is targeted towards multi-sensor measurement of temperature, humidity and water nitrate concentration for smart agriculture. Several scenarios involving In-Sensor-Analytics (ISA), Collaborative Intelligence (CI) and Context-Aware-Switching (CAS) of the cluster-head during CI has been considered. A real-time co-optimization algorithm has been developed for minimizing the energy consumption in the network, hence maximizing the overall battery lifetime of individual nodes. Measurement results show that the proposed ISA consumes ~467X lower energy as compared to traditional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication, and ~69,500X lower energy as compared with Long Range (LoRa) communication. When the ISA is implemented in conjunction with LoRa, the lifetime of the node increases from a mere 4.3 hours to 66.6 days with a 230 mAh coin cell battery, while preserving more than 98% of the total information. The CI and CAS algorithms help in extending the worst-case node lifetime by an additional 50%, thereby exhibiting an overall network lifetime of ~104 days, which is >90% of the theoretical limits as posed by the leakage currents present in the system, while effectively transferring information sampled every second. A web-based monitoring system was developed to archive the measured data in a continuous manner, and to report anomalies in the measured data.
