Retrieving images from large and varied repositories using visual contents has been one of major research items, but a challenging task in the image management community. In this paper we present an efficient approach for region-based image classification and retrieval using a fast multi-level neural network model. The advantages of this neural model in image classification and retrieval domain will be highlighted. The proposed approach accomplishes its goal in three main steps. First, with the help of a mean-shift based segmentation algorithm, significant regions of the image are isolated. Secondly, color and texture features of each region are extracted by using color moments and 2D wavelets decomposition technique. Thirdly the multi-level neural classifier is trained in order to classify each region in a given image into one of five predefined categories, i.e., Sky, Building, SandnRock, Grass and Water. Simulation results show that the proposed method is promising in terms of classification and retrieval accuracy results. These results compare favorably with the best published results obtained by other state-of-the-art image retrieval techniques.

We propose a novel image set classification technique using linear regression models. Downsampled gallery image sets are interpreted as subspaces of a high dimensional space to avoid the computationally expensive training step. We estimate regression models for each test image using the class specific gallery subspaces. Images of the test set are then reconstructed using the regression models. Based on the minimum reconstruction error between the reconstructed and the original images, a weighted voting strategy is used to classify the test set. We performed extensive evaluation on the benchmark UCSD/Honda, CMU Mobo and YouTube Celebrity datasets for face classification, and ETH-80 dataset for object classification. The results demonstrate that by using only a small amount of training data, our technique achieved competitive classification accuracy and superior computational speed compared with the state-of-the-art methods.
Hierarchical image segmentation provides region-oriented scalespace, i.e., a set of image segmentations at different detail levels in which the segmentations at finer levels are nested with respect to those at coarser levels. Most image segmentation algorithms, such as region merging algorithms, rely on a criterion for merging that does not lead to a hierarchy, and for which the tuning of the parameters can be difficult. In this work, we propose a hierarchical graph based image segmentation relying on a criterion popularized by Felzenzwalb and Huttenlocher. We illustrate with both real and synthetic images, showing efficiency, ease of use, and robustness of our method.
Until now, all single level segmentation algorithms except CNN-based ones lead to over segmentation. And CNN-based segmentation algorithms have their own problems. To avoid over segmentation, multiple thresholds of criteria are adopted in region merging process to produce hierarchical segmentation results. However, there still has extreme over segmentation in the low level of the hierarchy, and outstanding tiny objects are merged to their large adjacencies in the high level of the hierarchy. This paper proposes a region-merging-based image segmentation method that we call it Dam Burst. As a single level segmentation algorithm, this method avoids over segmentation and retains details by the same time. It is named because of that it simulates a flooding from underground destroys dams between water-pools. We treat edge detection results as strengthening structure of a dam if it is on the dam. To simulate a flooding from underground, regions are merged by ascending order of the average gra-dient inside the region.
Image-based localization (IBL) aims to estimate the 6DOF camera pose for a given query image. The camera pose can be computed from 2D-3D matches between a query image and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) models. Despite recent advances in IBL, it remains difficult to simultaneously resolve the memory consumption and match ambiguity problems of large SfM models. In this work, we propose a cascaded parallel filtering method that leverages the feature, visibility and geometry information to filter wrong matches under binary feature representation. The core idea is that we divide the challenging filtering task into two parallel tasks before deriving an auxiliary camera pose for final filtering. One task focuses on preserving potentially correct matches, while another focuses on obtaining high quality matches to facilitate subsequent more powerful filtering. Moreover, our proposed method improves the localization accuracy by introducing a quality-aware spatial reconfiguration method and a principal focal length enhanced pose estimation method. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that our method achieves very competitive localization performances in a memory-efficient manner.
Image hash algorithms generate compact binary representations that can be quickly matched by Hamming distance, thus become an efficient solution for large-scale image retrieval. This paper proposes RV-SSDH, a deep image hash algorithm that incorporates the classical VLAD (vector of locally aggregated descriptors) architecture into neural networks. Specifically, a novel neural network component is formed by coupling a random VLAD layer with a latent hash layer through a transform layer. This component can be combined with convolutional layers to realize a hash algorithm. We implement RV-SSDH as a point-wise algorithm that can be efficiently trained by minimizing classification error and quantization loss. Comprehensive experiments show this new architecture significantly outperforms baselines such as NetVLAD and SSDH, and offers a cost-effective trade-off in the state-of-the-art. In addition, the proposed random VLAD layer leads to satisfactory accuracy with low complexity, thus shows promising potentials as an alternative to NetVLAD.
