The electroweak response functions for inclusive electron scattering are calculated in the Relativistic Fermi Gas model, both in the quasi-elastic and in the $Delta$ peak regions. The impact of relativistic kinematics at high momentum transfer is investigated through an expansion in the initial nucleonic momentum, which is however exact in the four-momentum of the exchanged boson. The same expansion is applied to the meson exchange currents in the particle-hole sector: it is shown that the non-relativistic currents can be corrected by simple kinematical factors to account for relativity. The left-right asymmetry measured via polarized electron scattering is finally evaluated in the quasi-elastic and $Delta$ peaks.

We present the results of a recent study of meson-exchange two-body currents in lepton-nucleus inclusive scattering at various kinematics and for different nuclei within the Relativistic Fermi Gas model. We show that the associated nuclear response functions at their peaks scale as $A k_F^2$, for Fermi momentum $k_F$ going from 200 to 300 MeV/c and momentum transfer $q$ from $2k_F$ to 2 GeV/c. This behavior is different from what is found for the quasielastic response, which scales as $A/k_F$. This result can be valuable in the analyses of long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, which need to implement these nuclear effects in Monte Carlo simulations for different kinematics and nuclear targets.

The last few years activity of the Italian community concerning nuclear physics with electroweak probes is reviewed.Inclusive quasi-elastic electron-scattering, photon end electron induced one- and two-nucleon emission are considered. The scattering of neutrinos off nuclei in the quasi-elastic region is also discussed.
The charge form factor and weak decay constant of the pion as well as the pion-quark coupling constant in symmetric nuclear matter are explored in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where the pion is described as a bound state of dressed quark-antiquark pair obtained by the Bethe-Salpeter equation. For the in-medium current quark properties, we adopt the quark-meson coupling model, which describes successfully many hadron properties in a nuclear medium. The pion decay constant and the pion-quark coupling constant are found to decrease with increasing density as well as the magnitude of the light quark condensate. But the pion mass is found to be insensitive to density up to $1.25$ times the normal nuclear density. The pion charge form factor in the space-like region is also explored and is found to have a similar $Q^2$ dependence as the form factor in vacuum showing $1/Q^2$-behavior in large $Q^2$ region, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the four-momentum transfer squared. The modifications of the charge radius of the charged pion in nuclear matter are then estimated and the root-mean-square radius at the normal nuclear density is predicted to be larger than that in vacuum by about 20%.
Multiplicity distributions of hadrons produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions are studied within the hadron-resonance gas model in the large volume limit. In the canonical ensemble conservation of three charges (baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness) is enforced. In addition, in the micro-canonical ensemble energy conservation is included. An analytical method is used to account for resonance decays. Multiplicity distributions and scaled variances for negatively charged hadrons are presented along the chemical freeze-out line of central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions from SIS to LHC energies. Predictions obtained within different statistical ensembles are compared with preliminary NA49 experimental results on central Pb+Pb collisions in the SPS energy range. The measured fluctuations are significantly narrower than a Poisson reference distribution, and clearly favor expectations for the micro-canonical ensemble.
Particle multiplicities and ratios in the microcanonical ensemble of relativistic gases near production thresholds are studied. It is shown that the ratio of heavy to light particle multiplicity may be enhanced in comparison to its thermodynamic limit.
