We report on first measurements of low-mass electron pairs in Pb-Au collisions at the lower SPS beam energy of 40 AGeV. The pair yield integrated over the range of invariant masses 0.2<m<1 GeV/c^2 is enhanced by a factor of 5.1+-1.3(stat)+-1.0/1.5(syst data/decays) over the expectation from neutral meson decays, more than previously observed at the higher energy of 158 AGeV. The results are discussed with reference to model calculations based on pi+ pi- -> e+ e- annihilation with a modified rho-propagator. They may be linked to chiral symmetry restoration and support the notion that the in-medium modifications of the rho are more driven by baryon density than by temperature.

NA60 is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS which measured dimuon production in nucleus-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. In this paper we report on a precision measurement of low-mass muon pairs in 158 AGeV indium-indium collisions. A significant excess of pairs is observed above the yield expected from neutral meson decays. The excess can be isolated by subtraction of expected sources, thanks to the excellent mass resolution and large sample size.
Event-by-event fluctuations of mean pt and net charge in 40, 80, and 158 AGeV/c Pb+Au collisions are presented. The observed dynamical mean pt fluctuations in central events of about 1 % are very similar to results from RHIC. The centrality dependence of mean pt fluctuations at 158 AGeV/c shows a peculiar non-monotonic pattern with respect to the extrapolation from the fluctuations measured in p+p collisions. Dynamical net charge fluctuations smaller than the charge conservation limit are observed. After correction for charge conservation, the measured fluctuation signal in central events is comparable to RHIC results.
During the 1999 lead run, CERES has measured hadron and electron-pair production at 40 A GeV/c beam momentum with the spectrometer upgraded by the addition of a radial TPC. Here the analysis of lambda and antilambda will be presented.

Measurements of HBT correlations and event-by-event fluctuations of mean pT and the net charge in Pb-Au collisions at 40, 80, and 158 AGeV/c are presented. From comparisons of HBT radii measured from AGS to RHIC energies, a universal mean free path of pions at the thermal freeze-out of about 1 fm is derived. Non-statistical mean pT fluctuations of about 0.7 % are measured, which are somewhat smaller than fluctuations at RHIC. No indication for the QCD critical point is observed. Fluctuations of the net charge are reproduced by RQMD and URQMD models, but significantly larger than prediction in equilibrated QGP.
We present a measurement of $e^+e^-$ pair production in central Pb-Au collisions at 158$A$ GeV/$c$. As reported earlier, a significant excess of the $e^+e^-$ pair yield over the expectation from hadron decays is observed. The improved mass resolution of the present data set, recorded with the upgraded CERES experiment at the CERN-SPS, allows for a comparison of the data with different theoretical approaches. The data clearly favor a substantial in-medium broadening of the $rho$ spectral function over a density-dependent shift of the $rho$ pole mass. The in-medium broadening model implies that baryon induced interactions are the key mechanism to in-medium modifications of the $rho$-meson in the hot fireball at SPS energy.
