In this work we will review the main properties of brane-world models with low tension. Starting from very general principles, it is possible to obtain an effective action for the relevant degrees of freedom at low energies (branons). Using the cross sections for high-energy processes involving branons, we set bounds on the different parameters appearing in these models. We also show that branons provide a WIMP candidate for dark matter in a natural way. We consider cosmological constraints on its thermal and non-thermal relic abundances. We derive direct detection limits and compare those limits with the preferred parameter region in the case in which the EGRET excess in the diffuse galactic gamma rays is due to dark matter annihilation. Finally we will discuss the constraints coming from the precision tests of the Standard Model and the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

The Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model (E$_6$SSM) provides a low energy alternative to the MSSM, with an extra gauged U(1)$_N$ symmetry, solving the $mu$-problem of the MSSM. Inspired by the possible embedding into an E$_6$ GUT, the matter content fills three generations of E$_6$ multiplets, thus predicting exciting exotic matter such as diquarks or leptoquarks. We present predictions from a constrained version of the model (cE$_6$SSM), with a universal scalar mass $m_0$, trilinear mass $A$ and gaugino mass $M_{1/2}$. We reveal a large volume of the cE$_6$SSM parameter space where the correct breakdown of the gauge symmetry is achieved and all experimental constraints satisfied. We predict a hierarchical particle spectrum with heavy scalars and light gauginos, while the new exotic matter can be light or heavy depending on parameters. We present representative cE$_6$SSM scenarios, demonstrating that there could be light exotic particles, like leptoquarks and a U(1)$_N$ Z boson, with spectacular signals at the LHC.
For type I seesaw and in the basis where the charged lepton and heavy right-handed neutrino mass matrices are real and diagonal, four has been shown to be the maximum number of zeros allowed in the neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix $Y_ u$. These four zero textures have been classified into two distinct categories. We investigate certain phenomenological consequences of these textures within a supersymmetric framework. This is done by using conditions implied on elements of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix for textures of each category in $Y_ u$. These conditions turn out to be stable under radiative corrections. Including the effective mass, which appears in neutrinoless double beta decay, along with the usual neutrino masses, mixing angles and phases, it is shown analytically and through scatter plots how restricted regions in the seesaw parameter space are selected by these conditions. We also make consequential statements on the yet unobserved radiative lepton flavor violating decays such as $mu to e gamma$. All these decay amplitudes are proportional to the moduli of entries of the neutrino Majorana mass matrix. We also show under which conditions the low energy CP violation, showing up in neutrino oscillations, is directly linked to the CP violation required for producing successful flavor dependent and flavor independent lepton asymmetries during leptogenesis.
We clarify the relation between orbifold and interval pictures in 5d brane worlds. We establish this correspondence for Z_2-even and Z_2-odd orbifold fields. In the interval picture Gibbons-Hawking terms are necessary to fulfill consistency conditions. We show how the brane world consistency conditions arise in the interval picture. We apply the procedure to the situation where the transverse dimension is terminated by naked singularities. In particular, we find the boundary terms needed when the naive vacuum action is infinite.

In contrast to the 3D case, different approaches for deriving the gravitational corrections to the Heisenberg uncertainty relation do not lead to the unique result whereas additional spatial dimensions are present in the theory. We suggest to take logarithmic corrections to the black hole entropy, which has recently been proved both in string theory and loop quantum gravity to persist in presence of additional spatial dimensions, as a point of entry for identifying the modified Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. We then use a particular Hilbert space representation for such a quantum mechanics to construct the correspondingly modified field theory and address some phenomenological issues following from it. Some subtleties arising at the second quantization level are clearly pointed out. Solving the field operator to the first order in deformation parameter and defining the modified wave function for a free particle, we discuss the possible phenomenological implications for the black hole evaporation. Putting aside modifications arising at the second quantization level, we address the corrections to the gravitational potential due to modified propagator (back reaction on gravity) and see that correspondingly modified Schwarzschild-Tangherlini space-time shows up the disappearance of the horizon and vanishing of surface gravity when black hole mass approaches the quantum gravity scale. This result points out to the existence of zero-temperature black hole remnants.

This thesis address theoretical and phenomenological aspects of active and sterile mixing pattern within minimal extended seesaw frameworks. It consists of six chapters, where chapters one and six are dedicated to introduction and conclusion chapters, respectively. In chapter two, we study active-sterile phenomenology with a single generation of sterile neutrino ($m_Ssim mathcal{O}$(eV)) along with the three active neutrinos. Three independent cases for sterile mass matrices are studied in both normal and inverted hierarchy mass ordering. Chapter three is an extension of the previous chapter. The neutrino mass generation and baryogenesis {it via} thermal leptogenesis are studied in the fermionic sector. On the other hand, an extended multi Higgs doublet model is studied in the scalar sector. Among the three Higgs doublet, one of them does not acquire any vacuum expectation value (VEV); hence, it behaves as an inert Higgs. The lightest component of this behaves as a viable dark matter candidate. Within MES, sterile mass can be stressed up to the $keV$ scale. In the fourth chapter, we studied various phenomenologies considering sterile neutrino mass in the $keV$ range. This $keV$ scaled sterile neutrino also plays the role of dark matter candidate in our study. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the texture-zero neutrino dark matter model. We study active-sterile mixing, baryogenesis $via$ resonant leptogenesis and $0 ubetabeta$ in the fermion sector. While, in the scalar sector, the complex scalar flavon that gives rise to sterile mass takes part in dark matter study. The imaginary component of that scalar flavon is behaving as a viable dark matter candidate.
