The irreversible magnetization of the layered high-T_{c} superconductor Bi_{2+x}Sr_{2-(x+y)}Cu_{1+y}O_{6 +- delta} (Bi-2201) has been measured by means of a capacitive torquemeter up to B=28 T and down to T=60 mK. No magnetization jumps, peak effects or crossovers between different pinning mechanisms appear to be present. The deduced irreversibility field B_{irr} can not be described by the law B_{irr}(T)=B_{irr}(0)(1-T/T_{c})^n based on flux creep, but an excellent agreement is found with the analytical form of the melting line of the flux lattice as calculated from the Lindemann criterion. The behavior of B_{irr}(T) obtained here is very similar to the resistive critical field of a Bi-2201 thin film, suggesting that magnetoresistive experiments are likely to be strongly influenced by flux lattice melting.

We use a mapping of the multiband Hubbard model for $CuO_{3}$ chains in $RBa_{2}Cu_{3}0_{6+x}$ (R=Y or a rare earth) onto a $t-J$ model and the description of the charge dynamics of the latter in terms pf s spinless model, to study the electronic structure of the chains. We briefly review results for the optical conductivity and we calculate the quantum phase diagram of quarter filled chains including Coulomb repulsion up to that between next-nearest-neighbor $Cu$ atoms $V_{2}$, using the resulting effective Hamiltonian, mapped onto an XXZ chain, and the method of crossing of excitation spectra. The method gives accurate results for the boundaries of the metallic phase in this case. The inclusion of $V_{2}$ greatly enhances the region of metallic behavior of the chains.
We investigated the charge distribution in Pr_{1+x}Ba_{2-x}Cu_3O_{6+y}-crystals at liquid-He temperature by means of ^{63,65}Cu- and ^{141}Pr-NMR and NQR. The electric field gradients determined for the different oxygen coordinations of Cu(1) on the chains confirm the model that the hole states are localized in the O 2p - pi-orbitals of the CuO_(2)-planes. The intensity and line-shape analysis of the Cu(1)- and Pr-resonances in the oxygen doping series (x approx 0, y=0..1) and in the Pr/Ba solid-solution series (at y=1) allows us to assign the Pr-resonance to Pr at RE-sites. Therefore, we can investigate the charge distribution in the CuO_(2)-Pr-CuO_(2)-layers by crystal field analysis of the Pr-signal. To consistently describe our results with neutron scattering data we propose that two Pr-states are present in the RE-layer, and ascribe them to Pr with and one without a hole localized in the oxygen coordination shell. NMR detects only the former, with a virtually nonmagnetic singlet ground state, while space-integral techniques are dominated by the latter, due to a quasi-doublet ground state and antiferromagnetism of its Pr-moments at low temperature.
While pyrochlore iridate thin films are theoretically predicted to possess a variety of emergent topological properties, experimental verification of these predictions can be obstructed by the challenge in thin film growth. Here we report on the pulsed laser deposition and characterization of thin films of a representative pyrochlore compound Bi2Ir2O7. The films were epitaxially grown on yttria-stabilized zirconia substrates and have lattice constants that are a few percent larger than that of the bulk single crystals. The film composition shows a strong dependence on the oxygen partial pressure. Density-functional-theory calculations indicate the existence of Bi_Ir antisite defects, qualitatively consistent with the high Bi: Ir ratio found in the films. Both Ir and Bi have oxidation states that are lower than their nominal values, suggesting the existence of oxygen deficiency. The iridate thin films show a variety of intriguing transport characteristics, including multiple charge carriers, logarithmic dependence of resistance on temperature, antilocalization corrections to conductance due to spin-orbit interactions, and linear positive magnetoresistance.

We report that it is possible to obtain a series of high-quality crystals of La-doped Bi-2201, of which the transport properties have been believed to be dirtier than those of other cuprates. In our crystals, the normal-state transport properties display behaviors which are in good accord with other cuprates; for example, in the underdoped region the in-plane resistivity rho_{ab} shows the pseudogap feature and in the overdoped region the T dependence of rho_{ab} changes to T^n with n > 1. The characteristic temperatures of the pseudogap deduced from the resistivity and the Hall coefficient data are presented.
We present the electronic structure of Sr_{1-(x+y)}La_{x+y}Ti_{1-x}Cr_{x}O_{3} investigated by high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy. In the vicinity of Fermi level, it was found that the electronic structure were composed of a Cr 3d local state with the t_{2g}^{3} configuration and a Ti 3d itinerant state. The energy levels of these Cr and Ti 3d states are well interpreted by the difference of the charge-transfer energy of both ions. The spectral weight of the Cr 3d state is completely proportional to the spin concentration x irrespective of the carrier concentration y, indicating that the spin density can be controlled by x as desired. In contrast, the spectral weight of the Ti 3d state is not proportional to y, depending on the amount of Cr doping.
