We demonstrate composite media with ferromagnetic wires that exhibit a frequency region at the microwave regime with scattering spectra strongly dependent on an external magnetic field or stress. These tunable composite materials have recently been proposed theoretically; however, no direct experimental verification has been reported. We used composite materials with predominantly oriented CoFeCrSiB glass-coated amorphous wires having large magnetoimpedance at GHz frequencies. The free space measurements of reflection and transmission coefficients were conducted in the frequency range 1-8 GHz in the presence of an external static magnetic field or stress applied to the whole sample. In general, the transmission spectra show greater changes in the range of 10dB for a relatively small magnetic field of few Oe or stress of 0.1 MPa. The obtained results are quantitatively consistent with the analytical expressions predicted by the effective medium arguments. The incident electromagnetic wave induces an electrical dipole moment in each wire, the aggregate of which forms the effective dipole response of the whole composite structure in the radiative near or far field region. The field and stress dependences of the effective response arise from a field or tensile stress sensitivity of the ac surface impedance of a ferromagnetic wire. In the vicinity of the antenna resonance the variations in the magneto-impedance of the wire inclusions result in large changes of the total effective response. A number of applications of proposed materials is discussed including the field tunable microwave surfaces and the self-sensing media for the remote non-destructive evaluation of structural materials.

The effect of tensile stress on magnetoimpedance (MI) in CoMnSiB amorphous wires at microwave frequencies (0.5-3 GHz) is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. In the presence of the dc bias magnetic field of the order of the anisotropy field, the impedance shows very large and sensitive change when the wire is subjected to a tensile stress: 100% and 60% per 180 MPa for frequencies 500 MHz and 2.5 GHz, respectively. It is demonstrated that this behavior owes mainly to the directional change in the equilibrium magnetization caused by the applied stress and field, which agrees well with the theoretical results for the surface impedance. This stress effect on MI is proposed to use for creating microwave stress-tunable composite materials containing short magnetic wires. The analysis of the dielectric response from such materials shows that depending on the stress level in the material, the dispersion of the effective permittivity can be of a resonant or relaxation type with a considerable change in its values (up to 100% at 600 MPa). This media can be used for structural stress monitoring by microwave contrast imaging.
We study the elastic response of composites of rods embedded in elastic media. We calculate the micro-mechanical response functions, and bulk elastic constants as functions of rod density. We find two fixed points for Poissons ratio with respect to the addition of rods in 3D composites: there is an unstable fixed point for Poissons ratio=1/2 (an incompressible system) and a stable fixed point for Poissons ratio=1/4 (a compressible system). We also derive an approximate expression for the elastic constants for arbitrary rod density that yields exact results for both low and high density. These results may help to explain recent experiments [Physical Review Letters 102, 188303 (2009)] that reported compressibility for composites of microtubules in F-actin networks.
Two-dimensional ferromagnetic (2D FM) half-metal holds great potential for quantum magnetoelectronics and spintronic devices. Here, using density functional calculations and magnetic pictures, we study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the novel van der Waals (vdW) metal-organic framework (MOF), CrCl2(N2C4H4)2, i.e. CrCl2(pyrazine)2. Our results show that CrCl2(pyrazine)2 is a 2D FM half-metal, having a strong intralayer FM coupling but a much weak interlayer one due to the vdW spacing. Its spin-polarized conduction bands are formed by the pyrazine molecular orbitals and are polarized by the robust Cr3+ local spin = 3/2. These results agree with the recent experiments [Pedersen et al., Nature Chemistry, 2018, 10, 1056]. More interestingly, CrCl2(pyrazine)2 monolayer has a strong doping tunability of the FM half-metallicity, and the FM coupling would be significantly enhanced by electron doping. Our work highlights a vital role of the organic ligand and suggests that vdW MOF is also worth exploration for new 2D magnetic materials.
The broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurement using the rectifying effect of Ni81Fe19 wire has been investigated. One wire is deposited on the center strip line of the coplanar waveguide (CPW) and the other one deposited between two strip lines of CPW. The method is based on the detection of the magnetoresistance oscillation due to the magnetization dynamics induced by the radio frequency field. The magnetic field dependences of the resonance frequency and the rectification spectrum are presented and analytically interpreted on the standpoint of a uniform magnetization precession model.
Spin wave scattering in the right angle ferromagnetic cross was measured. Shape anisotropy defined magnetization ground states at zero biasing magnetic fields. Scattering of the spin waves in the center of ferromagnetic cross is strongly dependent on the amplitude and angle of the biasing magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations indicate that low in-plane biasing magnetic fields rotate the magnetization of the cross center while the arms stay axially magnetized due to the shape anisotropy. We discuss effect of biasing magnetic fields on the spin wave scattering and approaches to an effective spin wave switch based on the fabricated structure.
