We demonstrate that zero-field $beta$-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance and spin relaxation of low energy $^8$Li can be used as a sensitive local probe of structural phase transitions near a surface. We find that the transition near the surface of a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal occurs at $T_c sim 150$ K, i.e., 45 K higher than $T^{bulk}_c$, and that the tetragonal domains formed below $T_c$ are randomly oriented.

We demonstrate nuclear double resonance for nanometer-scale volumes of spins where random fluctuations rather than Boltzmann polarization dominate. When the Hartmann-Hahn condition is met in a cross-polarization experiment, flip-flops occur between two species of spins and their fluctuations become coupled. We use magnetic resonance force microscopy to measure this effect between 1H and 13C spins in 13C-enriched stearic acid. The development of a cross-polarization technique for statistical ensembles adds an important tool for generating chemical contrast in nanometer-scale magnetic resonance.
We study spin relaxation in dilute magnetic semiconductors near a ferromagnetic transition, where spin fluctuations become strong. An enhancement in the scattering rate of itinerant carriers from the spin fluctuations of localized impurities leads to a change in the dominant spin relaxation mechanism from Dyakonov-Perel to spin flips in scattering. On the ferromagnetic side of the transition, we show that due to the presence of two magnetic components -- the itinerant carriers and the magnetic impurities -- with different gyromagnetic ratios, the relaxation rate of the total magnetization can be quite different from the relaxation rate of the spin. Following a disturbance of the equilibrium magnetization, the spin is initially redistributed between the two components to restore the equilibrium magnetization. It is only on a longer time scale, controlled by the spin-orbit interaction, that the total spin itself relaxes to its equilibrium state.
Electron states in a inhomogeneous Ge/Si quantum dot array with groups of closely spaced quantum dots were studied by conventional continuous wave ($cw$) ESR and spin-echo methods. We find that the existence of quantum dot groups allows to increase the spin relaxation time in the system. Created structures allow us to change an effective localization radius of electrons by external magnetic field. With the localization radius close to the size of a quantum dot group, we obtain fourfold increasing spin relaxation time $T_1$, as compared to conventional homogeneous quantum dot arrays. This effect is attributed to averaging of local magnetic fields related to nuclear spins $^{29}$Si and stabilization of $S_z$-polarization during electron back-and-forth motion within a quantum dot group.
Low energy $beta$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance ($beta$-NMR) was used to investigate the spatial dependence of the hyperfine magnetic fields induced by Fe in the nonmagnetic Ag of an Au(40 AA)/Ag(200 AA)/Fe(140 AA) (001) magnetic multilayer (MML) grown on GaAs. The resonance lineshape in the Ag layer shows dramatic broadening compared to intrinsic Ag. This broadening is attributed to large induced magnetic fields in this layer by the magnetic Fe layer. We find that the induced hyperfine field in the Ag follows a power law decay away from the Ag/Fe interface with power $-1.93(8)$, and a field extrapolated to $0.23(5)$ T at the interface.
We studied the dynamic response and stochastic resonance of kinetic Ising spin system (ISS), subject to the joint external field of weak sinusoidal modulation and stochastic white-noise, through solving the mean-field equation of motion based on Glauber dynamics. The periodically driven stochastic ISS shows the occurrence of characteristic stochastic resonance as well as nonequilibrium dynamic phase transition (NDPT) when the frequency and amplitude h0 of driving field, the temperature t of the system and noise intensity D attain a specific accordance in quantity. There exist in the system two typical dynamic phases, referred to as dynamic disordered paramagnetic and ordered ferromagnetic phases respectively, corresponding to zero and unit dynamic order parameter. We also figured out the NDPT boundary surface of the system which separates the dynamic paramagnetic and dynamic ferromagnetic phase in the 3D parameter space of h0~t~D. An intriguing dynamical ferromagnetic phase with an intermediate order parameter at 0.66 was revealed for the first time in the ISS subject to the perturbation of a joint determinant and stochastic field. Our primary result indicates that the intermediate order dynamical ferromagnetic phase is dynamic metastable in nature and owns a peculiar characteristic in its stability and response to external driving field when compared with fully order dynamic ferromagnetic phase.
