We have performed first-principles calculations of thick slabs of Ti-doped sodium alanate (NaAlH_4), which allows to study the system energetics as the dopant progresses from the surface to the bulk. Our calculations predict that Ti stays on the surface, substitutes for Na, and attracts a large number of H atoms to its vicinity. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that the most likely product of the Ti-doping is the formation of H-rich TiAl_n (n>1) compounds on the surface, and hint at the mechanism by which Ti enhances the reaction kinetics of NaAlH_4.

We use textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the properties of the dry surface of pure silica and sodium silicate glasses. The surface layers are defined based on the atomic distributions along the direction ($z-$direction) perpendicular to the surfaces. We show that these surfaces have a higher concentration of dangling bonds as well as two-membered (2M) rings than the bulk samples. Increasing concentration of Na$_2$O reduces the proportion of structural defects. From the vibrational density of states, one concludes that 2M rings have a unique vibrational signature at a frequency $approx850$~cm$^{-1}$, compatible with experimental findings. We also find that, due to the presence of surfaces, the atomic vibration in the $z-$direction is softer than for the two other directions. The electronic density of states shows clear the differences between the surface and interior and we can attribute these to specific structural units. Finally, the analysis of the electron localization function allows to get insight on the influence of local structure and the presence of Na on the nature of chemical bonding in the glasses.
Based on density-functional perturbation theory we have computed the photoelastic tensor of a model of sodium silicate glass of composition (Na$_2$O)$_{0.25}$(SiO$_2$)$_{0.75}$ (NS3). The model (containig 84 atoms) is obtained by quenching from the melt in combined classical and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations. The calculated photoelastic coefficients are in good agreement with experimental data. In particular, the calculation reproduces quantitatively the decrease of the photoelastic response induced by the insertion of Na, as measured experimentally. The extension to NS3 of a phenomenological model developed in a previous work for pure a-SiO$_2$ indicates that the modulation upon strain of other structural parameters besides the SiOSi angles must be invoked to explain the change in the photoelstic response induced by Na.

We calculate the density of states (DOS) and the Mulliken population of the diamond and the co-doped diamonds with different concentrations of lithium (Li) and phosphorus (P) by the method of the density functional theory, and analyze the bonding situations of the Li-P co-doped diamond thin films and the impacts of the Li-P co-doping on the diamond conductivities. The results show that the Li-P atoms can promote the split of the diamond energy band near the Fermi level, and improve the electron conductivities of the Li-P co-doped diamond thin films, or even make the Li-P co-doped diamond from semiconductor to conductor. The effect of Li-P co-doping concentration on the orbital charge distributions, bond lengths and bond populations is analyzed. The Li atom may promote the split of the energy band near the Fermi level as well as may favorably regulate the diamond lattice distortion and expansion caused by the P atom.
We have performed systematic density functional calculations and evaluated thermoelectric properties, See- beck coefficient and anomalous Nernst coefficient of half-Heusler comounds CoMSb(M=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, and Mn). The carrier concentration dependence of Seebeck coefficients in nonmagnetic compounds are in good agreement with experimental values. We found that the half-metallic ferromagnetic CoMnSb show large anomalous Nernst effect originating from Berry curvature at the Brillouin zone boundary. These results help to understanding for the mechanism of large anomalous Nernst coefficient and give us a clue to design high performance magnetic thermoelectric materials.
Magnesium alanate Mg(AlH4)2 has recently raised interest as a potential material for hydrogen storage. We apply ab initio calculations to characterize structural, electronic and energetic properties of Mg(AlH4)2. Density functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are used to optimize the geometry and obtain the electronic structure. The latter is also studied by quasi-particle calculations at the GW level. Mg(AlH4)2 is a large band gap insulator with a fundamental band gap of 6.5 eV. The hydrogen atoms are bonded in AlH4 complexes, whose states dominate both the valence and the conduction bands. On the basis of total energies, the formation enthalpy of Mg(AlH4)2 with respect to bulk magnesium, bulk aluminum and hydrogen gas is 0.17 eV/H2 (at T = 0). Including corrections due to the zero point vibrations of the hydrogen atoms this number decreases to 0.10 eV/H2. The enthalpy of the dehydrogenation reaction Mg(AlH4)2 -> MgH2 +2Al+3H2(g) is close to zero, which impairs the potential usefulness of magnesium alanate as a hydrogen storage material.
