We have undertaken the simulation of hydrodynamic flows with bulk Lorentz factors in the range 10^2--10^6. We discuss the application of an existing relativistic, hydrodynamic primitive-variable recovery algorithm to a study of pulsar winds, and, in particular, the refinement made to admit such ultra-relativistic flows. We show that an iterative quartic root finder breaks down for Lorentz factors above 10^2 and employ an analytic root finder as a solution. We find that the former, which is known to be robust for Lorentz factors up to at least 50, offers a 24% speed advantage. We demonstrate the existence of a simple diagnostic allowing for a hybrid primitives recovery algorithm that includes an automatic, real-time toggle between the iterative and analytical methods. We further determine the accuracy of the iterative and hybrid algorithms for a comprehensive selection of input parameters and demonstrate the latters capability to elucidate the internal structure of ultra-relativistic plasmas. In particular, we discuss simulations showing that the interaction of a light, ultra-relativistic pulsar wind with a slow, dense ambient medium can give rise to asymmetry reminiscent of the Guitar nebula leading to the formation of a relativistic backflow harboring a series of internal shockwaves. The shockwaves provide thermalized energy that is available for the continued inflation of the PWN bubble. In turn, the bubble enhances the asymmetry, thereby providing positive feedback to the backflow.

We extend our approach for the exact solution of the Riemann problem in relativistic hydrodynamics to the case in which the fluid velocity has components tangential to the initial discontinuity. As in one-dimensional flows, we here show that the wave-pattern produced in a multidimensional relativistic Riemann problem can be predicted entirely by examining the initial conditions. Our method is logically very simple and allows for a numerical implementation of an exact Riemann solver which is both straightforward and computationally efficient. The simplicity of the approach is also important for revealing special relativistic effects responsible for a smooth transition from one wave-pattern to another when the tangential velocities in the initial states are suitably varied. While the content of this paper is focussed on a flat spacetime, the local Lorentz invariance allows its use also in fully general relativistic calculations.

We have developed a one-dimensional code to solve ultra-relativistic hydrodynamic problems, using the Glimm method for an accurate treatment of shocks and contact discontinuities. The implementation of the Glimm method is based on an exact Riemann solver and van der Corput sampling sequence. In order to improve computational efficiency, the Glimm method is replaced by a finite differencing scheme in those regions where the fluid flow is sufficiently smooth. The accuracy and convergence of this hybrid method is investigated in tests involving planar, cylindrically and spherically symmetric flows that exhibit strong shocks and Lorentz factors of up to ~2000. This hybrid code has proven to be successful in simulating the interaction between a thin, ultra-relativistic, spherical shell and a low density stationary medium, a situation likely to appear in Gamma-Ray Bursts, supernovae explosions, pulsar winds and AGNs.
Velocities close to the speed of light are a robust observational property of the jets observed in microquasars and AGNs, and are expected to be behind much of the phenomenology of GRBs. Yet, the mechanism boosting relativistic jets to such large Lorentz factors is still essentially unknown. Building on recent general-relativistic, multidimensional simulations of progenitors of short GRBs, we discuss a new effect in relativistic hydrodynamics which can act as an efficient booster in jets. This effect is purely hydrodynamical and occurs when large velocities tangential to a discontinuity are present in the flow, yielding Lorentz factors $Gamma sim 10^2-10^3$ or larger in flows with moderate initial Lorentz factors. Although without a Newtonian counterpart, this effect can be explained easily through the most elementary hydrodynamical flow: i.e., a relativistic Riemann problem.
We review several facets of the hydrodynamic description of the relativistic heavy ion collisions, starting from the historical motivation to the present understandings of the observed collective aspects of experimental data, especially those of the most recent RHIC and LHC results. In this report, we particularly focus on the conceptual questions and the physical foundations of the validity of the hydrodynamic approach itself. We also discuss recent efforts to clarify some of the points in this direction, such as the various forms of derivations of relativistic hydrodynamics together with the limitations intrinsic to the traditional approaches, variational approaches, known analytic solutions for special cases, and several new theoretical developments. Throughout this review, we stress the role of course-graining procedure in the hydrodynamic description and discuss its relation to the physical observables through the analysis of a hydrodynamic mapping of a microscopic transport model. Several questions to be answered to clarify the physics of collective phenomena in the relativistic heavy ion collisions are pointed out.

In an attempt to investigate the structures of ultra-relativistic jets injected into the intracluster medium (ICM) and the associated flow dynamics, such as shocks, velocity shear, and turbulence, we have developed a new special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) code in the Cartesian coordinates, based on the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme. It is a finite difference scheme of high spatial accuracy, which has been widely employed for solving hyperbolic systems of conservation equations. The code is equipped with different WE
