We briefly review some of the progress made in the last decade in the study of the X-ray properties of the quasar population from the luminous, local objects observed by BeppoSAX to the large, rapidly increasing population of z>4 quasars detected by Chandra and XMM-Newton in recent years.

We present BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton observations of MKN 231. These observations and in particular the BeppoSAX PDS data allowed us to unveil, for the first time, the highly absorbed (N$_Hsim 2times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$) AGN component. We find that: a) the AGN powering MKN231 has an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of $1^{+1}_{-0.5}times 10^{44}$ erg/s; b) the strong starburst activity contributes significantly in the 0.1-10 keV energy range. We propose that the starburst activity strongly contributes to the far infrared luminosity of MKN 231; this is also suggested by the multiwavelength properties of MKN 231.
Context. X-ray spectral variability analyses of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with moderate luminosities and redshifts typically show a softer when brighter behaviour. Such a trend has rarely been investigated for high-luminosity AGNs ($ L_{bol}gtrsim 10^{44}$ erg/s), nor for a wider redshift range (e.g. $0lesssim zlesssim 5$). Aims. We present an analysis of spectral variability based on a large sample of 2,700 quasars, measured at several different epochs, extracted from the fifth release of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue. Methods. We quantified the spectral variability through the parameter $beta$ defined as the ratio between the change in the photon index $Gamma$ and the corresponding logarithmic flux variation, $beta=-DeltaGamma/Deltalog F_X$. Results. Our analysis confirms a softer when brighter behaviour for our sample, extending the previously found general trend to high luminosity and redshift. We estimate an ensemble value of the spectral variability parameter $beta=-0.69pm0.03$. We do not find dependence of $beta$ on redshift, X-ray luminosity, black hole mass or Eddington ratio. A subsample of radio-loud sources shows a smaller spectral variability parameter. There is also some change with the X-ray flux, with smaller $beta$ (in absolute value) for brighter sources. We also find significant correlations for a small number of individual sources, indicating more negative values for some sources.
We present the spectral analysis of Chandra/HETGS and NuSTAR observations of the quasar PDS 456 from 2015, and XMM-Newton and NuSTAR archival data from 2013-2014, together with Chandra/HETGS data from 2003. We analyzed these three different epochs in a consistent way, looking for absorption features corresponding to highly ionized blueshifted absorption lines from H-like and He-like ions of iron (and nickel), as well as of other elements (O, Ne, Si, and S) in the soft band. We confirm the presence of a persistent ultra-fast outflow (UFO) with a velocity of v_out=-0.24 - -0.29c, previously detected. We also report the detection of an additional faster component of the UFO with a relativistic velocity of v_out=-0.48c. We implemented photoionization modeling, using XSTAR analytic model warmabs, to characterize the physical properties of the different kinematic components of the ultra-fast outflow and of the partial covering absorber detected in PDS 456. These two relativistic components of the ultra-fast outflow observed in the three epochs analyzed in this paper are powerful enough to impact the host galaxy of PDS 456 through AGN feedback.
The M-dwarf AD Leonis has been observed with the Reflection Grating Spectrometers and the European Photon Imaging Camera aboard XMM-Newton and also with the Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In the observation taken with XMM-Newton five large flares produced by AD Leo were identified and only one in the observation taken with Chandra. A quiescent level to the lightcurves is difficult to define, since several smaller flares mutually overlap each other. However, we defined a quasi-steady state outside of obvious flares or flare decays. The spectra from the flare state and the quasi-steady state are analysed separately. From these spectra the temperature structure was derived with a multi-temperature model and with a differential emission measure model. The multi-temperature model was also used to determine the relative abundances of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe. He-like ions, such as O VII and Ne IX, produce line triplets which are used to determine or constrain the electron temperature and electron density of the corresponding ion. During the flare state a higher emission measure at the hottest temperature is found for both XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. The derived abundances suggest the presence of an inverse First Ionization Potential effect in the corona of AD Leo.
Variations of the X-ray spectral slope have been found in many Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) at moderate luminosities and redshifts, typically showing a softer when brighter behaviour. However, similar studies are not usually performed for high-luminosity AGNs. We present an analysis of the spectral variability based on a large sample of quasars in wide intervals of luminosity and redshift, measured at several different epochs, extracted from the fifth release of the XMM Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue. Our analysis confirms a softer when brighter trend also for our sample, extending to high luminosity and redshift the general behaviour previously found. These results can be understood in light of current spectral models, such as intrinsic variations of the X-ray primary radiation, or superposition with a constant reflection component.
