We estimate the number of z~7 quasars that will be discovered in the Large Area Survey (LAS) element of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The LAS will cover 4000 sq degs of the northern sky to K=18.4, which is 3 mag. deeper than 2MASS. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has extended the quasar redshift limit to z=6.3. We demonstrate that to reach higher redshifts z~7, when Lya has passed through the z band, combinations of standard broad-band filters such as zJH and zJK are ineffective. We conducted an exploratory search for quasars at z~ 6 - 8, using the Early Data Release from United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky survey (UKIDSS) cross-matched to panoramic optical imagery. High redshift quasar candidates are chosen using multi-color selection in i,z,Y,J,H and K bands. After removal of apparent instrumental artifacts, our candidate list consisted of 34 objects. We further refined this list with deeper imaging in the optical for ten of our candidates. Twenty-five candidates were followed up spectroscopically in the near-infrared and in the optical. We confirmed twenty-five of our spectra as very low-mass main-sequence stars or brown dwarfs, which were indeed expected as the main contaminants of this exploratory search. The lack of quasar detection is not surprising: the estimated probability of finding a single z>6 quasar down to the limit of UKIDSS in the 27.3 square degrees of the EDR is <5%. We find that the most important limiting factor in this work is the depth of the available optical data. Experience gained in this pilot project can help refine high-redshift quasar selection criteria for subsequent UKIDSS data releases.
We examine the properties of the host galaxies of $z=7$ quasars using the large volume, cosmological hydrodynamical simulation BlueTides. We find that the 10 most massive black holes and the 191 quasars in the simulation (with $M_{textrm{UV,AGN}}<M_{textrm{UV,host}}$) are hosted by massive galaxies with stellar masses $log(M_ast/M_odot)=10.8pm0.2$, and $10.2pm0.4$, which have large star formation rates, of $513substack{+1225 -351}M_odot/rm{yr}$ and $191substack{+288 -120}M_odot/rm{yr}$, respectively. The hosts of the most massive black holes and quasars in BlueTides are generally bulge-dominated, with bulge-to-total mass ratio $B/Tsimeq0.85pm0.1$, however their morphologies are not biased relative to the overall $z=7$ galaxy sample. We find that the hosts of the most massive black holes and quasars are significantly more compact, with half-mass radii $R_{0.5}=0.41substack{+0.18 -0.14}$ kpc and $0.40substack{+0.11 -0.09}$ kpc respectively; galaxies with similar masses and luminosities have a wider range of sizes with a larger median value, $R_{0.5}=0.71substack{+0.28 -0.25}$ kpc. We make mock James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) images of these quasars and their host galaxies. We find that distinguishing the host from the quasar emission will be possible but still challenging with JWST, due to the small sizes of quasar hosts. We find that quasar samples are biased tracers of the intrinsic black hole--stellar mass relation, following a relation that is 0.2 dex higher than that of the full galaxy sample. Finally, we find that the most massive black holes and quasars are more likely to be found in denser environments than the typical $M_{textrm{BH}}>10^{6.5}M_odot$ black hole, indicating that minor mergers play at least some role in growing black holes in the early Universe.
We present the results of a pilot survey to find dust-reddened quasars by matching the FIRST radio catalog to the UKIDSS near-infrared survey, and using optical data from SDSS to select objects with very red colors. The deep K-band limit provided by UKIDSS allows for finding more heavily-reddened quasars at higher redshifts as compared with previous work using FIRST and 2MASS. We selected 87 candidates with K<=17.0 from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (LAS) First Data Release (DR1) which covers 190 deg2. These candidates reach up to ~1.5 magnitudes below the 2MASS limit and obey the color criteria developed to identify dust-reddened quasars. We have obtained 61 spectroscopic observations in the optical and/or near-infrared as well as classifications in the literature and have identified 14 reddened quasars with E(B-V)>0.1, including three at z>2. We study the infrared properties of the sample using photometry from the WISE Observatory and find that infrared colors improve the efficiency of red quasar selection, removing many contaminants in an infrared-to-optical color-selected sample alone. The highest-redshift quasars (z > 2) are only moderately reddened, with E(B-V) ~ 0.2-0.3. We find that the surface density of red quasars rises sharply with faintness, comprising up to 17% of blue quasars at the same apparent K-band flux limit. We estimate that to reach more heavily reddened quasars (i.e., E(B-V) > 0.5) at z>2 and a depth of K=17 we would need to survey at least ~2.5 times more area.
We provide predictions of the yield of $7<z<9$ quasars from the Euclid wide survey, updating the calculation presented in the Euclid Red Book in several ways. We account for revisions to the Euclid near-infrared filter wavelengths; we adopt steeper rates of decline of the quasar luminosity function (QLF; $Phi$) with redshift, $Phipropto10^{k(z-6)}$, $k=-0.72$, and a further steeper rate of decline, $k=-0.92$; we use better models of the contaminating populations (MLT dwarfs and compact early-type galaxies); and we use an improved Bayesian selection method, compared to the colour cuts used for the Red Book calculation, allowing the identification of fainter quasars, down to $J_{AB}sim23$. Quasars at $z>8$ may be selected from Euclid $OYJH$ photometry alone, but selection over the redshift interval $7<z<8$ is greatly improved by the addition of $z$-band data from, e.g., Pan-STARRS and LSST. We calculate predicted quasar yields for the assumed values of the rate of decline of the QLF beyond $z=6$. For the case that the decline of the QLF accelerates beyond $z=6$, with $k=-0.92$, Euclid should nevertheless find over 100 quasars with $7.0<z<7.5$, and $sim25$ quasars beyond the current record of $z=7.5$, including $sim8$ beyond $z=8.0$. The first Euclid quasars at $z>7.5$ should be found in the DR1 data release, expected in 2024. It will be possible to determine the bright-end slope of the QLF, $7<z<8$, $M_{1450}<-25$, using 8m class telescopes to confirm candidates, but follow-up with JWST or E-ELT will be required to measure the faint-end slope. Contamination of the candidate lists is predicted to be modest even at $J_{AB}sim23$. The precision with which $k$ can be determined over $7<z<8$ depends on the value of $k$, but assuming $k=-0.72$ it can be measured to a 1 sigma uncertainty of 0.07.
We describe the WFCAM Science Archive (WSA), which is the primary point of access for users of data from the wide-field infrared camera WFCAM on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT), especially science catalogue products from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). We describe the database design with emphasis on those aspects of the system that enable users to fully exploit the survey datasets in a variety of different ways. We give details of the database-driven curation applications that take data from the standard nightly pipeline-processed and calibrated files for the production of science-ready survey datasets. We describe the fundamentals of querying relational databases with a set of astronomy usage examples, and illustrate the results.
