The behavior of the shock wave in the atmosphere of the non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae pulsator remains a mystery. In this work, we firstly report a blueshifted Mg triplet emission in continuous spectroscopic observations for a non-Blazhko RRc pulsator (Catalina-1104058050978) with LAMOST medium resolution spectra. We analyse the photometric observations from Catalina Sky Survey of this RRc pulsator with pre-whitening sequence method and provide the ephemeris and phases. An additional frequency signal with $P_1/P_x = 0.69841$ is detected and discussed. The redshift and radial velocity of the spectra are provided by fitting process with $Sacute{e}rsic$ functions and cross-correlation method. Moreover, we plot the variation of H$alpha$ and Mg lines in a system comoving with the pulsation. Clear evolution of comoving blueshifted hydrogen and Mg emission is observed, which further confirms the existence of shock waves in RRc pulsators. The shock-triggered emission lasts over $15%$ of the pulsation cycle, which is much longer than the previous observations.

We present the analysis of the Blazhko effect - quasi-periodic modulation of pulsation amplitude and/or phase - in the Galactic bulge first overtone RR Lyrae stars (RRc). We used the data gathered during the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). Out of 10 826 analyzed RRc stars, Blazhko effect was detected in 607 stars which constitute 5.6 percent of the sample. It is the largest and most homogeneous sample of modulated RRc stars analyzed so far. Modulation periods cover a wide range, from slightly above 2 d to nearly 3000 d. Multiperiodic modulation was detected in 47 stars. The appearance of modulation in the frequency domain was studied in detail. Modulation manifests either as close doublets or as equidistant triplets and multiplets centered on radial mode frequency and its harmonics. In a significant fraction (29 percent) of stars, we have detected the modulation frequency itself, which corresponds to the modulation of the mean stellar brightness. Our search for period doubling effect, that was discovered recently in modulated fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars, and triggered development of new model behind the Blazhko modulation, yielded negative result. In 104 stars we detected additional signals that could correspond to both radial and non-radial modes. Statistical properties of modulated stars were analyzed in detail and confronted with properties of non-modulated stars and of modulated fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars. Our analysis provides constraints for the models to explain the Blazhko phenomenon, which still remains a puzzle more than hundred years after its discovery.
We analyzed photometry for the up-to-date collection of the first-overtone RR Lyrae stars (RRc; 11415 stars) and double-mode RR Lyrae stars (RRd; 148 stars) towards the Galactic bulge from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We analyzed frequency spectra of these stars in search for additional, low-amplitude signals, beyond the radial modes. We focused on stars from two groups: $RR_{0.61}$ and $RR_{0.68}$. In the first group, additional low-amplitude signals have periods shorter than the first-overtone period; period ratios fall in the 0.60-0.64 range. In the second group, additional low-amplitude signals have periods longer than the first-overtone period; period ratios tightly cluster around 0.68. Altogether we have detected 960 and 147 RR Lyrae stars that belong to $RR_{0.61}$ and $RR_{0.68}$ groups, respectively, which yield the incidence rates of 8.3 and 1.3 per cent of the considered sample. We discuss statistical properties of RR Lyrae stars with additional periodicities. For $RR_{0.61}$ group we provide strong arguments that additional periodicities are connected to non-radial pulsation modes of degrees $ell=8$ and $ell=9$, as proposed by Dziembowski. We have also detected two double-periodic variables, with two close periodicities, similar to RR Lyrae variable V37 in NGC 6362. Properties of these peculiar variables, which may form a new group of double-mode pulsators, are discussed.
Hydrogen emissions of RR Lyrae variables are the imprints of shock waves traveling through their atmospheres. We develop a pattern recognition algorithm, which is then applied to single-epoch spectra of SDSS and LAMOST. These two spectroscopic surveys covered $sim$ 10,000 photometrically confirmed RR Lyrae stars. We discovered in total 127 RR Lyrae stars with blueshifted Balmer emission feature, including 103 fundamental mode (RRab), 20 first-overtone (RRc), 3 double-mode (RRd), and 1 Blazhko type (temporary classification for RR Lyrae stars with strong Blazhko modulation in Catalina sky survey that cannot be characterized) RR Lyrae variable. This forms the largest database to date of the properties of hydrogen emission in RR Lyrae variables. Based on ZTF DR5, we carried out a detailed light-curve analysis for the Blazhko type RR Lyrae star with hydrogen emission of long-term modulations. We characterize the Blazhko type RR Lyrae star as an RRab and point out a possible Blazhko period. Finally, we set up simulations on mock spectra to test the performance of our algorithm and on the real observational strategy to investigate the occurrence of the first apparition.
Steps toward the nature inside RR Lyrae variables can not only improve our understanding of variable stars but also innovate the precision when we use them as tracers to map the structure of the universe. In this work, we develop a hand-crafted one-dimensional pattern recognition pipeline to fetch out the first apparitions, the most prominent observational characteristic of shock. We report the first detection of hydrogen emission lines in the first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae variables. We find that there is an anti-correlation between the intensity and the radial velocity of the emission signal, which is possibly caused by opacity changing in the helium ionization zone. Moreover, we find one RRd star with hydrogen emission that possibly shows Blazhko-type modulations. According to our discoveries, with an enormous volume of upcoming data releases of variable stars and spectra, it may become possible to build up the bridge between shock waves and big problems like the Blazhko effect in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars.
The chemical composition of extremely metal-poor stars (EMP stars; [Fe/H]<~ -3) is a unique tracer of early nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. As such stars are rare, we wish to find classes of luminous stars which can be studied at high resolution. We aim to determine the detailed chemical composition of the two EMP stars CS30317-056 and CS22881-039, originally thought to be red horizontal-branch (RHB) stars, and compare it to earlier results for EMP stars as well as to nucleosynthesis yields from various supernova (SN) models. In the analysis, we discovered that our targets are in fact the two most metal-poor RR Lyrae stars known. Our detailed abundance analysis, taking into account the variability of the stars, is based on VLT/UVES spectra (R~ 43000) and 1D LTE OSMARCS model atmospheres and synthetic spectra. For comparison with SN models we also estimate NLTE corrections for a number of elements. We derive LTE abundances for the 16 elements O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Sr and Ba, in good agreement with earlier values for EMP dwarf, giant and RHB stars. Li and C are not detected in either star. NLTE abundance corrections are newly calculated for O and Mg and taken from the literature for other elements. The resulting abundance pattern is best matched by model yields for supernova explosions with high energy and/or significant asphericity effects. Our results indicate that, except for Li and C, the surface composition of EMP RR Lyr stars is not significantly affected by mass loss, mixing or diffusion processes; hence, EMP RR Lyr stars should also be useful tracers of the chemical evolution of the early Galactic halo. The observed abundance ratios indicate that these stars were born from an ISM polluted by energetic, massive (25 - 40M*) and/or aspherical supernovae, but the NLTE corrections for Sc and certain other elements do play a role in the choice of model.
