The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics and, therefore, it is expected to have large couplings to hypothetical new physics in many models beyond the SM (BSM). Various studies have predicted the presence of multi-lepton anomalies at the LHC. One of those anomalies is the excess production of two same-sign leptons and three isolated leptons in association with $b$-jets. These are reasonably well described by a 2HDM+$S$ model, where $S$ is a singlet scalar. Both the ATLAS and CMS experiments have reported sustained excesses in these final states. This includes corners of the phase-space where production of top quark pairs in association with a $W$ boson contributes to. Here, we investigate the production of two same-sign and three leptons from the production of four top quark final states. Our focus is on understanding the differences between the SM and BSM production mechanisms of four top quarks from $toverline{t} A$ ($A rightarrow toverline{t}$) using Machine Leaning techniques with twelve discriminating kinematic variables.
In top squark (stop) searches with a compressed spectrum, it is very helpful to consider the stop production recoiling against a hard jet from the initial state radiation to obtain a significant amount of missing transverse energy. In particular, the kinematic variable $R_M$ which measures the ratio of the lightest neutralino mass and the stop mass proved to be crucial in separating the signals from the backgrounds in both the all-hadronic decay and the semileptonic decay of the stops. Here we generalize the search method to the dileptonic stop decays. In this case, due to the two missing neutrinos, there are not enough kinematic constraint equations to solve for the $R_M$ variable exactly, but only render an allowed interval consistent with the event. However, we show that the minimum and the maximum values of this allowed interval still provide useful variables in discriminating signals from the backgrounds. Although in the traditional stop decay to a top quark and the lightest neutralino, the dileptonic mode is not as competitive due to its small branching ratio, it becomes the main search mode if the stops decay through the charginos and sleptons with a compressed spectrum. We show that with the new variables, the dileptonic search of the stop can cover regions of the parameter space which have not been constrained before.
We study the polarization of positively charged $W$s in the scattering of massive electroweak bosons at hadron colliders. We rely on the separation of weak boson polarizations in the gauge-invariant, doubly-resonant part of the amplitude in Monte Carlo simulations. Polarizations depend on the reference frame in which they are defined. We discuss the change in polarization fractions and in kinematic distributions arising from defining polarization vectors in two different reference frames which have been employed in recent experimental analyses.
We analyse same sign dilepton signatures in a non-universal flavor changing Z model. These arise due to tt (or t_bar t_bar) production processes due to the semi-leptonic decays of (anti)tops. We also discuss top reconstruction and spin measurement using the variable MT2 and MT2-Assisted On-Shell (MAOS) Momentum} techniques and will also provide a comparison with the on-shell mass relation method. Sensitivities to the flavor-changing top coupling has also been estimated for different LHC energies and projected LHC luminosities corresponding to them.
In models of maximal flavor violation (MxFV) there is at least one new scalar $Phi_{FV}$ which couples to the quarks via $Phi_{FV} q_i q_j propto xi_{ij}$ where $xi_{i3},xi_{3i} sim V_{tb}$ for $i = 1,2$ and $xi_{33} sim V_{td}$ and $V$ is the CKM matrix. In this article, we explore the potential phenomenological implications of MxFV for collider experiments. We study MxFV signals of same-sign leptons from same-sign top-quark pair production at the Tevatron and at the LHC. We show that the current Tevatron dataset has strong sensitivity to this signature, for which there are no current limits. For example, if $m_{Phi_{FV}} sim 200$ GeV and the MxFV coupling $xi$ has a natural value of $sim 1$, we expect $sim 12$ MxFV events to survive a selection requiring a pair of same-sign leptons, a tagged $b$-jet and missing transverse energy, over a background of approximately 4-5 events.
In this work, we investigate the prompt $J/psi$ production in associated with top quark pair to leading order in the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism at the LHC with $sqrt{s} =13$ TeV. In addition to the contribution from direct $J/psi$ production, we also include the indirect contribution from the directly produced heavier charmmonia $chi_{cJ}$ and $psi^prime$. We present the numerical results for the total and differential cross sections and find that the $sideset{^3}{^{(8)}_1}{mathop{{S}}}$ states give the dominant contributions. The prompt $tbar t J/psi$ signatures at the LHC are analyzed in the tetralepton channel $ppto (tto W^+(ell^+ u)b) (bar t to W^-(ell^- bar u)bar b) (J/psitomu^+mu^-)$ and trilepton channel $ppto (tto W(q q^prime)b) ( t to W(ell u) b) (J/psitomu^+mu^-)$, with the $J/psi$ mesons decaying into muon pair, and the top quarks decaying leptonically or hadronically. We find that $tbar t J/psi$ proudction can be potentially detected at the LHC, whose measurement is useful to test the heavy quarkonium production mechanism.
