Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) with hybrid precoding is a promising technique to meet the high data rate requirements for future 6G communications. To realize efficient hybrid precoding, it is essential to obtain accurate channel state information. Existing channel estimation algorithms with low pilot overhead heavily rely on the channel sparsity in the angle domain, which is achieved by the classical far-field planar wavefront assumption. However, due to the non-negligible near-field spherical wavefront property in XL-MIMO systems, this channel sparsity in the angle domain is not available anymore, and thus existing far-field channel estimation schemes will suffer from severe performance loss. To address this problem, in this paper we study the near-field channel estimation by exploiting the polar-domain sparse representation of the near-field XL-MIMO channel. Specifically, unlike the classical angle-domain representation that only considers the angle information of the channel, we propose a new polar-domain representation, which simultaneously accounts for both the angle and distance information. In this way, the near-field channel also exhibits sparsity in the polar domain. By exploiting the channel sparsity in the polar domain, we propose the on-grid and off-grid near-field channel estimation schemes for XL-MIMO. Firstly, an on-grid polar-domain simultaneous orthogonal matching pursuit (P-SOMP) algorithm is proposed to efficiently estimate the near-field channel. Furthermore, to solve the resolution limitation of the on-grid P-SOMP algorithm, an off-grid polar-domain simultaneous iterative gridless weighted (P-SIGW) algorithm is proposed to improve the estimation accuracy, where the parameters of the near-field channel are directly estimated. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.

Extremely large-scale massive MIMO (XL-MIMO) is a promising technique for future 6G communications. The sharp increase of BS antennas leads to the unaffordable channel estimation overhead. Existing low-overhead channel estimation schemes are based on the far-field or near-field channel model. However, the far-field or near-field channel model mismatches the practical XL-MIMO channel feature, where some scatters are in the far-field region while others may locate in the near-field region, i.e., hybrid-field channel. Thus, existing far-field and near-field channel estimation schemes cannot be directly used to accurately estimate the hybrid-field XL-MIMO channel. To solve this problem, we propose an efficient hybrid-field channel estimation scheme by accurately modeling the XL-MIMO channel. Specifically, we firstly reveal the hybrid-field channel feature of the XL-MIMO channel. Then, we propose a hybrid-field channel model to capture this feature, which contains both the far-field and near-field path components. Finally, we propose a hybrid-field channel estimation scheme, where the far-field and near-field path components are respectively estimated. Simulation results show the proposed scheme performs better than existing schemes.
The problem of wideband massive MIMO channel estimation is considered. Targeting for low complexity algorithms as well as small training overhead, a compressive sensing (CS) approach is pursued. Unfortunately, due to the Kronecker-type sensing (measurement) matrix corresponding to this setup, application of standard CS algorithms and analysis methodology does not apply. By recognizing that the channel possesses a special structure, termed hierarchical sparsity, we propose an efficient algorithm that explicitly takes into account this property. In addition, by extending the standard CS analysis methodology to hierarchical sparse vectors, we provide a rigorous analysis of the algorithm performance in terms of estimation error as well as number of pilot subcarriers required to achieve it. Small training overhead, in turn, means higher number of supported users in a cell and potentially improved pilot decontamination. We believe, that this is the first paper that draws a rigorous connection between the hierarchical framework and Kronecker measurements. Numerical results verify the advantage of employing the proposed approach in this setting instead of standard CS algorithms.
Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising enabler for next-generation wireless communications due to its reconfigurability and high energy efficiency in improving the propagation condition of channels. In this paper, we consider a large-scale IRS-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in which statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter. By leveraging random matrix theory, we first derive a deterministic approximation (DA) of the ergodic rate with low computation complexity and prove the existence and uniqueness of the DA parameters. Then, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm to obtain a locally optimal solution for maximizing the DA with respect to phase shifts and signal covariance matrices. Numerical results will show that the DA is tight and our proposed method can improve the ergodic rate effectively.
The Internet of Things (IoT) could enable the development of cloud multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems where internet-enabled devices can work as distributed transmission/reception entities. We expect that spatial multiplexing with distributed reception using cloud MIMO would be a key factor of future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we first review practical receivers for distributed reception of spatially multiplexed transmit data where the fusion center relies on quantized received signals conveyed from geographically separated receive nodes. Using the structures of these receivers, we propose practical channel estimation techniques for the block-fading scenario. The proposed channel estimation techniques rely on very simple operations at the received nodes while achieving near-optimal channel estimation performance as the training length becomes large.
Channel estimation is very challenging when the receiver is equipped with a limited number of radio-frequency (RF) chains in beamspace millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input and multiple-output systems. To solve this problem, we exploit a learned denoising-based approximate message passing (LDAMP) network. This neural network can learn channel structure and estimate channel from a large number of training data. Furthermore, we provide an analytical framework on the asymptotic performance of the channel estimator. Based on our analysis and simulation results, the LDAMP neural network significantly outperforms state-of-the-art compressed sensingbased algorithms even when the receiver is equipped with a small number of RF chains. Therefore, deep learning is a powerful tool for channel estimation in mmWave communications.
