Robotic vision plays a key role for perceiving the environment in grasping applications. However, the conventional framed-based robotic vision, suffering from motion blur and low sampling rate, may not meet the automation needs of evolving industrial requirements. This paper, for the first time, proposes an event-based robotic grasping framework for multiple known and unknown objects in a cluttered scene. Compared with standard frame-based vision, neuromorphic vision has advantages of microsecond-level sampling rate and no motion blur. Building on that, the model-based and model-free approaches are developed for known and unknown objects grasping respectively. For the model-based approach, event-based multi-view approach is used to localize the objects in the scene, and then point cloud processing allows for the clustering and registering of objects. Differently, the proposed model-free approach utilizes the developed event-based object segmentation, visual servoing and grasp planning to localize, align to, and grasp the targeting object. The proposed approaches are experimentally validated with objects of different sizes, using a UR10 robot with an eye-in-hand neuromorphic camera and a Barrett hand gripper. Moreover, the robustness of the two proposed event-based grasping approaches are validated in a low-light environment. This low-light operating ability shows a great advantage over the grasping using the standard frame-based vision. Furthermore, the developed model-free approach demonstrates the advantage of dealing with unknown object without prior knowledge compared to the proposed model-based approach.
Event-based cameras are novel, efficient sensors inspired by the human vision system, generating an asynchronous, pixel-wise stream of data. Learning from such data is generally performed through heavy preprocessing and event integration into images. This requires buffering of possibly long sequences and can limit the response time of the inference system. In this work, we instead propose to directly use events from a DVS camera, a stream of intensity changes and their spatial coordinates. This sequence is used as the input for a novel emph{asynchronous} RNN-like architecture, the Input-filtering Neural ODEs (INODE). This is inspired by the dynamical systems and filtering literature. INODE is an extension of Neural ODEs (NODE) that allows for input signals to be continuously fed to the network, like in filtering. The approach naturally handles batches of time series with irregular time-stamps by implementing a batch forward Euler solver. INODE is trained like a standard RNN, it learns to discriminate short event sequences and to perform event-by-event online inference. We demonstrate our approach on a series of classification tasks, comparing against a set of LSTM baselines. We show that, independently of the camera resolution, INODE can outperform the baselines by a large margin on the ASL task and its on par with a much larger LSTM for the NCALTECH task. Finally, we show that INODE is accurate even when provided with very few events.
Grasping in cluttered scenes is challenging for robot vision systems, as detection accuracy can be hindered by partial occlusion of objects. We adopt a reinforcement learning (RL) framework and 3D vision architectures to search for feasible viewpoints for grasping by the use of hand-mounted RGB-D cameras. To overcome the disadvantages of photo-realistic environment simulation, we propose a large-scale dataset called Real Embodied Dataset (RED), which includes full-viewpoint real samples on the upper hemisphere with amodal annotation and enables a simulator that has real visual feedback. Based on this dataset, a practical 3-stage transferable active grasping pipeline is developed, that is adaptive to unseen clutter scenes. In our pipeline, we propose a novel mask-guided reward to overcome the sparse reward issue in grasping and ensure category-irrelevant behavior. The grasping pipeline and its possible variants are evaluated with extensive experiments both in simulation and on a real-world UR-5 robotic arm.
Robots can effectively grasp and manipulate objects using their 3D models. In this paper, we propose a simple shape representation and a reconstruction method that outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of geometric metrics and enables grasp generation with high precision and success. Our reconstruction method models the object geometry as a pair of depth images, composing the shell of the object. This representation allows using image-to-image residual ConvNet architectures for 3D reconstruction, generates object reconstruction directly in the camera frame, and generalizes well to novel object types. Moreover, an object shell can be converted into an object mesh in a fraction of a second, providing time and memory efficient alternative to voxel or implicit representations. We explore the application of shell representation for grasp planning. With rigorous experimental validation, both in simulation and on a real setup, we show that shell reconstruction encapsulates sufficient geometric information to generate precise grasps and the associated grasp quality with over 90% accuracy. Diverse grasps computed on shell reconstructions allow the robot to select and execute grasps in cluttered scenes with more than 93% success rate.
Event based cameras are a new passive sensing modality with a number of benefits over traditional cameras, including extremely low latency, asynchronous data acquisition, high dynamic range and very low power consumption. There has been a lot of recent interest and development in applying algorithms to use the events to perform a variety of 3D perception tasks, such as feature tracking, visual odometry, and stereo depth estimation. However, there currently lacks the wealth of labeled data that exists for traditional cameras to be used for both testing and development. In this paper, we present a large dataset with a synchronized stereo pair event based camera system, carried on a handheld rig, flown by a hexacopter, driven on top of a car and mounted on a motorcycle, in a variety of different illumination levels and environments. From each camera, we provide the event stream, grayscale images and IMU readings. In addition, we utilize a combination of IMU, a rigidly mounted lidar system, indoor and outdoor motion capture and GPS to provide accurate pose and depth images for each camera at up to 100Hz. For comparison, we also provide synchronized grayscale images and IMU readings from a frame based stereo camera system.
Dynamic obstacle avoidance is one crucial component for compliant navigation in crowded environments. In this paper we present a system for accurate and reliable detection and tracking of dynamic objects using noisy point cloud data generated by stereo cameras. Our solution is real-time capable and specifically designed for the deployment on computationally-constrained unmanned ground vehicles. The proposed approach identifies individual objects in the robots surroundings and classifies them as either static or dynamic. The dynamic objects are labeled as either a person or a generic dynamic object. We then estimate their velocities to generate a 2D occupancy grid that is suitable for performing obstacle avoidance. We evaluate the system in indoor and outdoor scenarios and achieve real-time performance on a consumer-grade computer. On our test-dataset, we reach a MOTP of $0.07 pm 0.07m$, and a MOTA of $85.3%$ for the detection and tracking of dynamic objects. We reach a precision of $96.9%$ for the detection of static objects.
