Many characteristics of dwarf carbon stars are broadly consistent with a binary origin, including mass transfer from an evolved companion. While the population overall appears to have old-disc or halo kinematics, roughly 2$,$per cent of these stars exhibit H$alpha$ emission, which in low-mass main-sequence stars is generally associated with rotation and relative youth. Its presence in an older population therefore suggests either irradiation or spin-up. This study presents time-series analyses of photometric and radial-velocity data for seven dwarf carbon stars with H$alpha$ emission. All are shown to have photometric periods in the range 0.2--5.2$,$d, and orbital periods of similar length, consistent with tidal synchronisation. It is hypothesised that dwarf carbon stars with emission lines are the result of close-binary evolution, indicating that low-mass, metal-weak or metal-poor stars can accrete substantial material prior to entering a common-envelope phase.

AGB stars are responsible for producing a variety of elements, including carbon, nitrogen, and the heavy elements produced in the slow neutron-capture process ($s$-elements). There are many uncertainties involved in modelling the evolution and nucleosynthesis of AGB stars, and this is especially the case at low metallicity, where most of the stars with high enough masses to enter the AGB have evolved to become white dwarfs and can no longer be observed. The stellar population in the Galactic halo is of low mass ($lesssim 0.85M_{odot}$) and only a few observed stars have evolved beyond the first giant branch. However, we have evidence that low-metallicity AGB stars in binary systems have interacted with their low-mass secondary companions in the past. The aim of this work is to investigate AGB nucleosynthesis at low metallicity by studying the surface abundances of chemically peculiar very metal-poor stars of the halo observed in binary systems. To this end we select a sample of 15 carbon- and $s$-element-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP-$s$) halo stars that are found in binary systems with measured orbital periods. With our model of binary evolution and AGB nucleosynthesis, we determine the binary configuration that best reproduces, at the same time, the observed orbital period and surface abundances of each star of the sample. The observed periods provide tight constraints on our model of wind mass transfer in binary stars, while the comparison with the observed abundances tests our model of AGB nucleosynthesis.
We present UBVRI photometry of three symbiotic stars ZZ CMi, TX CVn and AG Peg carried out from 1997 to 2008 in Piwnice Observatory near Torun. To search orbital periods of these stars Fourier analysis was used. For two of them, TX CVn and AG Peg, we have confirmed the earlier known periods. For ZZ CMi we found a relatively short period 218.59 days. Assuming, that the orbital period is twice longer (P=437.18 days), the double sine wave in the light curve can be interpreted by ellipsoidal effect.
The bright Nova Cygni 1975 is a rare nova on a magnetic white dwarf (WD). Later it was found to be an asynchronous polar, now called V1500 Cyg. Our multisite photometric campaign occurring 40 years post eruption covered 26-nights (2015-2017). The reflection effect from the heated donor has decreased, but still dominates the op- tical radiation with an amplitude ~1^m.5. The 0^m.3 residual reveals cyclotron emission and ellipsoidal variations. Mean brightness modulation from night-to-night is used to measure the 9.6-d spin-orbit beat period that is due to changing accretion geometry including magnetic pole-switching of the flow. By subtracting the orbital and beat frequencies, spin-phase dependent light curves are obtained. The amplitude and profile of the WD spin light curves track the cyclotron emitting accretion regions on the WD and they vary systematically with beat phase. A weak intermittent signal at 0.137613-d is likely the spin period, which is 1.73(1) min shorter than the orbital period. The O-C diagram of light curve maxima displays phase jumps every one-half beat period, a characteristic of asynchronous polars. The first jump we interpret as pole switching between regions separated by 180 deg. Then the spot drifts during ~0.1 beat phase before undergoing a second phase jump between spots separated by less than 180 deg. We trace the cooling of the still hot WD as revealed by the irradiated companion. The post nova evolution and spin-orbit asynchronism of V1500 Cyg continues to be a powerful laboratory for accretion flows onto magnetic white dwarfs.
A substantial fraction of the lowest metallicity stars show very high enhancements in carbon. It is debated whether these enhancements reflect the stars birth composition, or if their atmospheres were subsequently polluted, most likely by accretion from an AGB binary companion. Here we investigate and compare the binary properties of three carbon-enhanced sub-classes: The metal-poor CEMP-s stars that are additionally enhanced in barium; the higher metallicity (sg)CH- and Ba II stars also enhanced in barium; and the metal-poor CEMP-no stars, not enhanced in barium. Through comparison with simulations, we demonstrate that all barium-enhanced populations are best represented by a ~100% binary fraction with a shorter period distribution of at maximum ~20,000 days. This result greatly strengthens the hypothesis that a similar binary mass transfer origin is responsible for their chemical patterns. For the CEMP-no group we present new radial velocity data from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope for 15 stars to supplement the scarce literature data. Two of these stars show indisputable signatures of binarity. The complete CEMP-no dataset is clearly inconsistent with the binary properties of the CEMP-s class, thereby strongly indicating a different physical origin of their carbon enhancements. The CEMP-no binary fraction is still poorly constrained, but the population resembles more the binary properties in the Solar Neighbourhood.
We analyze 221 eclipsing binaries (EBs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud with B-type main-sequence (MS) primaries ($M_1$ $approx$ 4 - 14 M$_{odot}$) and orbital periods $P$ = 20 - 50 days that were photometrically monitored by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We utilize our three-stage automated pipeline to (1) classify all 221 EBs, (2) fit physical models to the light curves of 130 detached well-defined EBs from which unique parameters can be determined, and (3) recover the intrinsic binary statistics by correcting for selection effects. We uncover two statistically significant trends with age. First, younger EBs tend to reside in dustier environments with larger photometric extinctions, an empirical relation that can be implemented when modeling stellar populations. Second, younger EBs generally have large eccentricities. This demonstrates that massive binaries at moderate orbital periods are born with a Maxwellian thermal orbital velocity distribution, which indicates they formed via dynamical interactions. In addition, the age-eccentricity anticorrelation provides a direct constraint for tidal evolution in highly eccentric binaries containing hot MS stars with radiative envelopes. The intrinsic fraction of B-type MS stars with stellar companions $q$ = $M_2$/$M_1$ $>$ 0.2 and orbital periods $P$ = 20 - 50 days is (7 $pm$ 2)%. We find early-type binaries at $P$ = 20 - 50 days are weighted significantly toward small mass ratios $q$ $approx$ 0.2 - 0.3, which is different than the results from previous observations of closer binaries with $P$ $<$ 20 days. This indicates that early-type binaries at slightly wider orbital separations have experienced substantially less coevolution and competitive accretion during their formation in the circumbinary disk.
