We propose a new approach for defining and searching clusters in graphs that represent real technological or transaction networks. In contrast to the standard way of finding dense parts of a graph, we concentrate on the structure of edges between the clusters, as it is motivated by some earlier observations, e.g. in the structure of networks in ecology and economics and by applications of discrete tomography. Mathematically special colorings and chromatic numbers of graphs are studied.

More than ten years ago in 2008, a new kind of graph coloring appeared in graph theory, which is the {it rainbow connection coloring} of graphs, and then followed by some other new concepts of graph colorings, such as {it proper connection coloring, monochromatic connection coloring, and conflict-free connection coloring} of graphs. In about ten years of our consistent study, we found that these new concepts of graph colorings are actually quite different from the classic graph colorings. These {it colored connection colorings} of graphs are brand-new colorings and they need to take care of global structural properties (for example, connectivity) of a graph under the colorings; while the traditional colorings of graphs are colorings under which only local structural properties (adjacent vertices or edges) of a graph are taken care of. Both classic colorings and the new colored connection colorings can produce the so-called chromatic numbers. We call the colored connection numbers the {it global chromatic numbers}, and the classic or traditional chromatic numbers the {it local chromatic numbers}. This paper intends to clarify the difference between the colored connection colorings and the traditional colorings, and finally to propose the new concepts of global colorings under which global structural properties of the colored graph are kept, and the global chromatic numbers.
We study two weighted graph coloring problems, in which one assigns $q$ colors to the vertices of a graph such that adjacent vertices have different colors, with a vertex weighting $w$ that either disfavors or favors a given color. We exhibit a weighted chromatic polynomial $Ph(G,q,w)$ associated with this problem that generalizes the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. General properties of this polynomial are proved, and illustrative calculations for various families of graphs are presented. We show that the weighted chromatic polynomial is able to distinguish between certain graphs that yield the same chromatic polynomial. We give a general structural formula for $Ph(G,q,w)$ for lattice strip graphs $G$ with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The zeros of $Ph(G,q,w)$ in the $q$ and $w$ planes and their accumulation sets in the limit of infinitely many vertices of $G$ are analyzed. Finally, some related weighted graph coloring problems are mentioned.
We present a framework for designing differentially private (DP) mechanisms for binary functions via a graph representation of datasets. Datasets are nodes in the graph and any two neighboring datasets are connected by an edge. The true binary function we want to approximate assigns a value (or true color) to a dataset. Randomized DP mechanisms are then equivalent to randomized colorings of the graph. A key notion we use is that of the boundary of the graph. Any two neighboring datasets assigned a different true color belong to the boundary. Under this framework, we show that fixing the mechanism behavior at the boundary induces a unique optimal mechanism. Moreover, if the mechanism is to have a homogeneous behavior at the boundary, we present a closed expression for the optimal mechanism, which is obtained by means of a emph{pullback} operation on the optimal mechanism of a line graph. For balanced mechanisms, not favoring one binary value over another, the optimal $(epsilon,delta)$-DP mechanism takes a particularly simple form, depending only on the minimum distance to the boundary, on $epsilon$, and on $delta$.

Lattice-based cryptography is not only for thwarting future quantum computers, and is also the basis of Fully Homomorphic Encryption. Motivated from the advantage of graph homomorphisms we combine graph homomorphisms with graph total colorings together for designing new types of graph homomorphisms: totally-colored graph homomorphisms, graphic-lattice homomorphisms from sets to sets, every-zero graphic group homomorphisms from sets to sets. Our graph-homomorphism lattices are made up by graph homomorphisms. These new homomorphisms induce some problems of graph theory, for example, Number String Decomposition and Graph Homomorphism Problem.
Finding a suitable data representation for a specific task has been shown to be crucial in many applications. The success of subspace clustering depends on the assumption that the data can be separated into different subspaces. However, this simple assumption does not always hold since the raw data might not be separable into subspaces. To recover the ``clustering-friendly representation and facilitate the subsequent clustering, we propose a graph filtering approach by which a smooth representation is achieved. Specifically, it injects graph similarity into data features by applying a low-pass filter to extract useful data representations for clustering. Extensive experiments on image and document clustering datasets demonstrate that our method improves upon state-of-the-art subspace clustering techniques. Especially, its comparable performance with deep learning methods emphasizes the effectiveness of the simple graph filtering scheme for many real-world applications. An ablation study shows that graph filtering can remove noise, preserve structure in the image, and increase the separability of classes.
