We report the discovery of a first-order phase transition at around 125 K in NbCrP, which is a nonsymmorphic crystal with Pnma space group. From the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements using the crystals made by the Sn-flux method, the high-temperature (HT) phase is characterized to be metallic with a non-negligible magnetic anisotropy. The low-temperature (LT) phase is also found to be a nonmagnetic metallic state with a crystal of lower symmetry. In the LT phase, the spin susceptibility is reduced by ~30 % from that in the HT phase, suggesting that the phase transition is triggered by the electronic instability. The possible origin of the phase transition in NbCrP is discussed based on the electronic structure by comparing with those in other nonsymmorphic compounds RuP and RuAs.

Structural, transport and magnetic properties of single-crystalline samples of a praseodymium-based cubic compound PrMgNi4 were studied. The single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed that Mg atoms are substituted for the Pr atoms at the 4a site by 4.5%. The chi(T) data follow the Curie-Weiss law with an effective moment for the Pr3+ ion. The magnetic specific heat divided by temperature, Cm/T, shows a broad maximum at around 3 K, which is reproduced by a two-level model with a ground state doublet. On cooling below 1 K, Cm/T approaches a constant value, which behavior is reproduced by a random two-level model. The twofold degeneracy of the ground state is lifted by symmetry lowering due to the substituted Mg atoms for the Pr atoms or strong hybridizations between the 4f2 electron states and conduction bands, which hinders the long-range quadrupole order.
We report on the magnetic properties of CsCo$_2$Se$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure, which we have characterized through a series of magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. We find that CsCo$_2$Se2$_2$ undergoes a phase transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered state with a Neel temperature of $T_{rm N} approx$ 66 K. The nearest neighbour interactions are ferromagnetic as observed by the positive Curie-Weiss temperature of $Theta approx$ 51.0 K. We find that the magnetic structure of CsCo$_2$Se$_2$ consists of ferromagnetic sheets, which are stacked antiferromagnetically along the tetragonal textit{c}-axis, generally referred to as A-type antiferromagnetic order. The observed magnitude of the ordered magnetic moment at $T$ = 1.5 K is found to be only 0.20(1)$mu_{rm Bohr}$/Co. Already in comparably small magnetic fields of $mu_0 H_{MM}$(5K) $approx$ 0.3 T, we observe a metamagnetic transition that can be attributed to spin-rearrangements of CsCo$_2$Se$_2$, with the moments fully ferromagnetically saturated in a magnetic field of $mu_0 H_{rm FM}$(5K) $approx$ 6.4 T. We discuss the entire experimentally deduced magnetic phase diagram for CsCo$_2$Se$_2$ with respect to its unconventionally weak magnetic coupling. Our study characterizes CsCo$_2$Se$_2$, which is chemically and electronically posed closely to the $A_xFe_{2-y}Se_2$ superconductors, as a host of versatile magnetic interactions.
Dark states are stationary states of a dissipative, Lindblad-type time evolution with zero von Neumann entropy, therefore representing examples of pure, steady quantum states. Non-equilibrium dynamics featuring a dark state recently gained a lot of attraction since their implementation in the context of driven-open quantum systems represents a viable possibility to engineer unique, pure states. In this work, we analyze a driven many-body spin system, which undergoes a transition from a dark steady state to a mixed steady state as a function of the driving strength. This transition connects a zero entropy (dark) state with a finite entropy (mixed) state and thus goes beyond the realm of equilibrium statistical mechanics and becomes of genuine nonequilibrium character. We analyze the relevant long wavelength fluctuations driving this transition in a regime where the system performs a discontinuous jump from a dark to a mixed state by means of the renormalization group. This allows us to approach the nonequilibrium dark state transition and identify similarities and clear differences to common, equilibrium phase transitions, and to establish the phenomenology for a first order dark state phase transition.

Theoretical studies of quantum phase transitions have suggested critical points with higher symmetries than those of the underlying Hamiltonian. Here we demonstrate a surprising emergent symmetry of the coexistence state at a strongly discontinuous phase transition between two ordered ground states. We present a quantum Monte Carlo study of a two-dimensional $S=1/2$ quantum magnet hosting the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and plaquette-singlet solid (PSS) states recently detected in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. We observe that the O(3) symmetric AFM order and the Z$_2$ symmetric PSS order form an O(4) vector at the transition. The control parameter $g$ (a coupling ratio) rotates the vector between the AFM and PSS sectors and there are no energy barriers between the two at the transition point $g_c$. This phenomenon may be observable in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$.

CaFe$_2$As$_2$ has been synthesized and found to form in the tetragonal, ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure with lattice parameters $a = 3.912(68) AA$ and $c = 11.667(45) AA$. Upon cooling through 170 K, CaFe$_2$As$_2$ undergoes a first order, structural phase transition to a low temperature, orthorhombic phase with a $2 - 3$ K range of hysteresis and coexistence. This transition is clearly evident in microscopic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. CaFe$_2$As$_2$ is the third member of the AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) family to exhibit such a dramatic phase transition and is a promising candidate for studies of doping induced superconductivity.
