This paper is concerned with the extreme points of the polytopes of stochastic tensors. By a tensor we mean a multi-dimensional array over the real number field. A line-stochastic tensor is a nonnegative tensor in which the sum of all entries on each line (i.e., one free index) is equal to 1; a plane-stochastic tensor is a nonnegative tensor in which the sum of all entries on each plane (i.e., two free indices) is equal to 1. In enumerating extreme points of the polytopes of line- and plane-stochastic tensors of order 3 and dimension $n$, we consider the approach by linear optimization and present new lower and upper bounds. We also study the coefficient matrices that define the polytopes.
Considering $ntimes ntimes n$ stochastic tensors $(a_{ijk})$ (i.e., nonnegative hypermatrices in which every sum over one index $i$, $j$, or $k$, is 1), we study the polytope ($Omega_{n}$) of all these tensors, the convex set ($L_n$) of all tensors in $Omega_{n}$ with some positive diagonals, and the polytope ($Delta_n$) generated by the permutation tensors. We show that $L_n$ is almost the same as $Omega_{n}$ except for some boundary points. We also present an upper bound for the number of vertices of $Omega_{n}$.
We confirm a conjecture of Monical, Tokcan and Yong on a characterization of the lattice points in the Newton polytopes of key polynomials.
The celebrated upper bound theorem of McMullen determines the maximal number of extreme points of a polyhedron in terms of its dimension and the number of constraints which define it, showing that the maximum is attained by the polar of the cyclic polytope. We show that the same bound is valid in the tropical setting, up to a trivial modification. Then, we study the natural candidates to be the maximizing polyhedra, which are the polars of a family of cyclic polytopes equipped with a sign pattern. We construct bijections between the extreme points of these polars and lattice paths depending on the sign pattern, from which we deduce explicit bounds for the number of extreme points, showing in particular that the upper bound is asymptotically tight as the dimension tends to infinity, keeping the number of constraints fixed. When transposed to the classical case, the previous constructions yield some lattice path generalizations of Gales evenness criterion.
We present an algorithm that produces the classification list of smooth Fano d-polytopes for any given d. The input of the algorithm is a single number, namely the positive integer d. The algorithm has been used to classify smooth Fano d-polytopes for d<=7. There are 7622 isomorphism classes of smooth Fano 6-polytopes and 72256 isomorphism classes of smooth Fano 7-polytopes.
We find by applying MacMahons partition analysis that all magic labellings of the cube are of eight types, each generated by six basis elements. A combinatorial proof of this fact is given. The number of magic labellings of the cube is thus reobtained as a polynomial in the magic sum of degree $5$. Then we enumerate magic distinct labellings, the number of which turns out to be a quasi-polynomial of period 720720. We also find the group of symmetry can be used to significantly simplify the computation.
