The classical Chapman-Enskog procedure admits a substantial geometrical generalization known as slow manifold reduction. This generalization provides a paradigm for deriving and understanding most reduced models in plasma physics that are based on controlled approximations applied to problems with multiple timescales. In this Review we develop the theory of slow manifold reduction with a plasma physics audience in mind. In particular we illustrate (a) how the slow manifold concept may be used to understand emph{breakdown} of a reduced model over sufficiently-long time intervals, and (b) how a discrete-time analogue of slow manifold theory provides a useful framework for developing implicit integrators for temporally-stiff plasma models. For readers with more advanced mathematical training we also use slow manifold reduction to explain the phenomenon of inheritance of Hamiltonian structure in dissipation-free reduced plasma models. Various facets of the theory are illustrated in the context of the Abraham-Lorentz model of a single charged particle experiencing its own radiation drag. As a culminating example we derive the slow manifold underlying kinetic quasineutral plasma dynamics up to first-order in perturbation theory. This first-order result incorporates several physical effects associated with small deviations from exact charge neutrality that lead to slow drift away from predictions based on the leading-order approximation $n_e = Z_i ,n_i$.

We show that there exists an underlying manifold with a conformal metric and compatible connection form, and a metric type Hamiltonian (which we call the geometrical picture) that can be put into correspondence with the usual Hamilton-Lagrange mechanics. The requirement of dynamical equivalence of the two types of Hamiltonians, that the momenta generated by the two pictures be equal for all times, is sufficient to determine an expansion of the conformal factor, defined on the geometrical coordinate representation, in its domain of analyticity with coefficients to all orders determined by functions of the potential of the Hamilton-Lagrange picture, defined on the Hamilton-Lagrange coordinate representation, and its derivatives. Conversely, if the conformal function is known, the potential of a Hamilton-Lagrange picture can be determined in a similar way. We show that arbitrary local variations of the orbits in the Hamilton-Lagrange picture can be generated by variations along geodesics in the geometrical picture and establish a correspondence which provides a basis for understanding how the instability in the geometrical picture is manifested in the instability of the original Hamiltonian motion.
In review of the White Papers from the Voyage 2050 process and after the public presentation of a number of these papers in October 2019 in Madrid, we as White Paper lead authors have identified a coherent science theme that transcends the divisions around which the Topical Teams are structured. This note aims to highlight this synergistic science theme and to make the Topical Teams and the Voyage 2050 Senior Committee aware of the wide importance of these topics and the broad support that they have across the worldwide science community.
In this paper, we study the bipartite entanglement of spin coherent states in the case of pure and mixed states. By a proper choice of the subsystem spins, the entanglement for large class of quantum systems is investigated. We generalize the result to the case of bipartite mixed states using a simplified expression of concurrence in Wootters measure of the bipartite entanglement. It is found that in some cases, the maximal entanglement of mixed states in the context of $su(2)$ algebra can be detected. Our observations may have important implications in exploiting these states in quantum information theory.
Large scale dynamical systems (e.g. many nonlinear coupled differential equations) can often be summarized in terms of only a few state variables (a few equations), a trait that reduces complexity and facilitates exploration of behavioral aspects of otherwise intractable models. High model dimensionality and complexity makes symbolic, pen--and--paper model reduction tedious and impractical, a difficulty addressed by recently developed frameworks that computerize reduction. Symbolic work has the benefit, however, of identifying both reduced state variables and parameter combinations that matter most (effective parameters, inputs); whereas current computational reduction schemes leave the parameter reduction aspect mostly unaddressed. As the interest in mapping out and optimizing complex input--output relations keeps growing, it becomes clear that combating the curse of dimensionality also requires efficient schemes for input space exploration and reduction. Here, we explore systematic, data-driven parameter reduction by means of effective parameter identification, starting from current nonlinear manifold-learning techniques enabling state space reduction. Our approach aspires to extend the data-driven determination of effective state variables with the data-driven discovery of effective model parameters, and thus to accelerate the exploration of high-dimensional parameter spaces associated with complex models.
Feedback control of quantum mechanical systems must take into account the probabilistic nature of quantum measurement. We formulate quantum feedback control as a problem of stochastic nonlinear control by considering separately a quantum filtering problem and a state feedback control problem for the filter. We explore the use of stochastic Lyapunov techniques for the design of feedback controllers for quantum spin systems and demonstrate the possibility of stabilizing one outcome of a quantum measurement with unit probability.
