We employ simulated annealing to identify the global solution of a dynamical model, to make a favorable impression upon colleagues at the departmental holiday party and then exit undetected as soon as possible. The procedure, Gradual Freeze-out of an Optimal Estimation via Optimization of Parameter Quantification - GFOOEOPQ, is designed for the socially awkward. The socially awkward among us possess little instinct for pulling off such a maneuver, and may benefit from a machine to do it for us. The method rests upon Bayes Theorem, where the probability of a future model state depends on current knowledge of the model. Here, model state vectors are party attendees, and the future event of interest is their disposition toward us at times following the party. We want these dispositions to be favorable. To this end, we first interact so as to make favorable impressions, or at least ensure that these people remember having seen us there. Then we identify the exit that minimizes the chance that anyone notes how early we high-tailed it. Now, poorly-resolved estimates will correspond to degenerate solutions. As noted, we possess no instinct to identify a global optimum by ourselves. This can have disastrous consequences. For this reason, GFOOEOPQ employs annealing to iteratively home in on this optimum. The method is illustrated via a simulated event hosted by someone in the physics department (I am not sure who), in a two-bedroom apartment on the fifth floor of an elevator building in Manhattan, with viable Exit parameters: front door, side door to a stairwell, fire escape, and a bathroom window that opens onto the fire escape. Preliminary tests are reported at two real social celebrations. The procedure is generalizable to corporate events and family gatherings. Readers are encouraged to report novel applications of GFOOEOPQ, to expand the algorithm.

A way to fight your traffic tickets. The paper was awarded a special prize of $400 that the author did not have to pay to the state of California. In view of enormous, extremely surprising and completely unexpected public interest to this work, we have added an appendix answering the two most common questions.
The Matthew effect refers to the adage written some two-thousand years ago in the Gospel of St. Matthew: For to all those who have, more will be given. Even two millennia later, this idiom is used by sociologists to qualitatively describe the dynamics of individual progress and the interplay between status and reward. Quantitative studies of professional careers are traditionally limited by the difficulty in measuring progress and the lack of data on individual careers. However, in some professions, there are well-defined metrics that quantify career longevity, success, and prowess, which together contribute to the overall success rating for an individual employee. Here we demonstrate testable evidence of the age-old Matthew rich get richer effect, wherein the longevity and past success of an individual lead to a cumulative advantage in further developing his/her career. We develop an exactly solvable stochastic career progress model that quantitatively incorporates the Matthew effect, and validate our model predictions for several competitive professions. We test our model on the careers of 400,000 scientists using data from six high-impact journals, and further confirm our findings by testing the model on the careers of more than 20,000 athletes in four sports leagues. Our model highlights the importance of early career development, showing that many careers are stunted by the relative disadvantage associated with inexperience.
Sine-Wiener noise is increasingly adopted in realistic stochastic modeling for its bounded nature. However, many features of the SW noise are still unexplored. In this paper, firstly, the properties of the SW noise and its integral process are explored as the parameter $D$ in the SW noise tends to infinite. It is found that although the distribution of the SW noise is quite different from Gaussian white noise, the integral process of the SW noise shows many similarities with the Wiener process. Inspired by the Wiener process, which uses the diffusion coefficient to denote the intensity of the Gaussian noise, a quantity is put forward to characterize the SW noises intensity. Then we apply the SW noise to a one-dimensional double-well potential system and the Maier-Stein system to investigate the escape behaviors. A more interesting result is observed that the mean first exit time also follows the well-known Arrhenius law as in the case of the Gaussian noise, and the quasi-potential and the exit location distributions are very close to the results of the Gaussian noise.

We combine K-means clustering with the least-squares kernel classification method. K-means clustering is used to extract a set of representative vectors for each class. The least-squares kernel method uses these representative vectors as a training set for the classification task. We show that this combination of unsupervised and supervised learning algorithms performs very well, and we illustrate this approach using the MNIST dataset
This paper describes how home appliances might be enhanced to improve user awareness of energy usage. Households wish to lead comfortable and manageable lives. Balancing this reasonable desire with the environmental and political goal of reducing electricity usage is a challenge that we claim is best met through the design of interfaces that allows users better control of their usage and unobtrusively informs them of the actions of their peers. A set of design principles along these lines is formulated in this paper. We have built a fully functional prototype home appliance with a socially aware interface to signal the aggregate usage of the users peer group according to these principles, and present the prototype in the paper.
