Reported here is the first demonstration of electron beam generation in an SRF TESLA 1.3 GHz gun equipped with field emission cathode when operated at 2 Kelvin. The cathode is submicron film of nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] deposited atop a Nb RRR300 cathode plug. The output current was measured to increase exponentially as a function of the cavity gradient. Our results demonstrate a feasible path toward simplified fully cryogenic SRF injector technology. One important finding is that the electron emitter made of (N)UNCD, a material long been known as a highly efficient field emission material, demonstrated a record low turn-on gradient of 0.6 MV/m. A hypothesis explaining this behavior is proposed.
We have directly measured THz wakefields induced by a subpicosecond, intense relativistic electron bunch in a diamond loaded accelerating structure via the wakefield acceleration method. We present here the beam test results from the first diamond based structure. Diamond has been chosen for its high breakdown threshold and unique thermoconductive properties. Fields produced by a leading (drive) beam were used to accelerate a trailing (witness) electron bunch which followed the drive bunch at a variable distance. The energy gain of a witness bunch as a function of its separation from the drive bunch describes the time structure of the generated wakefield.
A low level radio frequency (LLRF) control system is designed and constructed at Peking University, which is for the DC-SRF photo injector operating at 2K. Besides with continuous wave (CW), the system is also reliable with pulsed RF and pulsed beam, the stability of amplitude and phase can achieve 0.13% and 0.1{deg}respectively. It is worth noting that the system works perfectly when the cavity is driven at both generator driven resonator (GDR) and self-excited loop (SEL), the latter is useful in measuring the performance of the cavity.
SRF cavities for particle acceleration are conventionally operated immersed in a bath of liquid helium at 4.2 K and below. Although this cooling configuration is practically and economically viable for large scientific accelerator installations, it may not be so for smaller accelerators intended for industrial applications such as the treatment of wastewater, sludge, flue gases, etc. In this paper, we describe a procedure to operate SRF cavities without liquid helium that can be used to construct electron-beam sources for industrial applications of electron irradiation (1-10 MeV electron energy). In this procedure, an elliptical single-cell 650 MHz niobium-tin coated niobium cavity is coupled to a closed-cycle 4 K cryocooler using high purity aluminum thermal links. The cryocooler conductively extracts heat (RF dissipation) from the cavity without requiring liquid helium around the cavity. We present construction details of this cryocooler conduction-cooling technique and systematic experiments that have demonstrated ~10 MV/m cw gradient on the cavity. By straightforward scaling up the cavity length and number of cryocoolers, the technique will provide the complete range of 1-10 MeV electron energy for industrial applications.
At the end of its operations in 2011, the Fermilab antiproton production complex consisted of a sophisticated target system, three 8-GeV storage rings (namely the Debuncher, the Accumulator and the Recycler), 25 independent multi-GHz stochastic cooling systems, the worlds only relativistic electron cooling system and a team of technical experts equal to none. The accelerator complex at Fermilab supported a broad physics program including the Tevatron Collider Run II, neutrino experiments using 8-GeV and 120-GeV proton beams, as well as a test beam facility and other fixed target experiments using 120-GeV primary proton beams. This paper provides a brief description of Fermilab accelerators as they operated at the end of the Collider Run II (2011).
The superconducting solenoid magnet prototype for ADS injection-I had been fabricated in Beijing Qihuan Mechanical and Electric Engineer Company and tested in Haerbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in Nov, 2012. Batch magnet production was processed after some major revision from the magnet prototype, they include: removing off the perm-alloy shield, extending the iron yoke, using thin superconducting cable, etc. The first one of the batch magnets was tested in the vertical Dewar in HIT in Sept. 2013. Field measurement was carried out at the same time by the measurement platform that seated on the top of the vertical Dewar. This paper will present the field measurement system design, measurement results and discussion on the residual field from the persistent current effect.
