Assessing associations between a response of interest and a set of covariates in spatial areal models is the leitmotiv of ecological regression. However, the presence of spatially correlated random effects can mask or even bias estimates of such associations due to confounding effects if they are not carefully handled. Though potentially harmful, confounding issues have often been ignored in practice leading to wrong conclusions about the underlying associations between the response and the covariates. In spatio-temporal areal models, the temporal dimension may emerge as a new source of confounding, and the problem may be even worse. In this work, we propose two approaches to deal with confounding of fixed effects by spatial and temporal random effects, while obtaining good model predictions. In particular, restricted regression and an apparently -- though in fact not -- equivalent procedure using constraints are proposed within both fully Bayes and empirical Bayes approaches. The methods are compared in terms of fixed-effect estimates and model selection criteria. The techniques are used to assess the association between dowry deaths and certain socio-demographic covariates in the districts of Uttar Pradesh, India.

In Functional Data Analysis, data are commonly assumed to be smooth functions on a fixed interval of the real line. In this work, we introduce a comprehensive framework for the analysis of functional data, whose domain is a two-dimensional manifold and the domain itself is subject to variability from sample to sample. We formulate a statistical model for such data, here called Functions on Surfaces, which enables a joint representation of the geometric and functional aspects, and propose an associated estimation framework. We assess the validity of the framework by performing a simulation study and we finally apply it to the analysis of neuroimaging data of cortical thickness, acquired from the brains of different subjects, and thus lying on domains with different geometries.
The Cox regression model and its associated hazard ratio (HR) are frequently used for summarizing the effect of treatments on time to event outcomes. However, the HRs interpretation strongly depends on the assumed underlying survival model. The challenge of interpreting the HR has been the focus of a number of recent works. Besides, several alternative measures have been proposed in order to deal with these concerns. The marginal Cox regression models include an identifiable hazard ratio without individual but populational causal interpretation. In this work, we study the properties of one particular marginal Cox regression model and consider its estimation in the presence of omitted confounder. We prove the large sample consistency of an estimation score which allows non-binary treatments. Our Monte Carlo simulations suggest that finite sample behavior of the procedure is adequate. The studied estimator is more robust than its competitors for weak instruments although it is slightly more biased for large effects of the treatment. The practical use of the presented techniques is illustrated through a real practical example using data from the vascular quality initiative registry. The used R code is provided as Supplementary Material.
Bayesian causal inference offers a principled approach to policy evaluation of proposed interventions on mediators or time-varying exposures. We outline a general approach to the estimation of causal quantities for settings with time-varying confounding, such as exposure-induced mediator-outcome confounders. We further extend this approach to propose two Bayesian data fusion (BDF) methods for unmeasured confounding. Using informative priors on quantities relating to the confounding bias parameters, our methods incorporate data from an external source where the confounder is measured in order to make inferences about causal estimands in the main study population. We present results from a simulation study comparing our data fusion methods to two common frequentist correction methods for unmeasured confounding bias in the mediation setting. We also demonstrate our method with an investigation of the role of stage at cancer diagnosis in contributing to Black-White colorectal cancer survival disparities.
This paper contributes to the multivariate analysis of marked spatio-temporal point process data by introducing different partial point characteristics and extending the spatial dependence graph model formalism. Our approach yields a unified framework for different types of spatio-temporal data including both, purely qualitatively (multivariate) cases and multivariate cases with additional quantitative marks. The proposed graphical model is defined through partial spectral density characteristics, it is highly computationally efficient and reflects the conditional similarity among sets of spatio-temporal sub-processes of either points or marked points with identical discrete marks. The paper considers three applications, two on crime data and a third one on forestry.
Large renewable energy projects, such as large offshore wind farms, are critical to achieving low-emission targets set by governments. Stochastic computer models allow us to explore future scenarios to aid decision making whilst considering the most relevant uncertainties. Complex stochastic computer models can be prohibitively slow and thus an emulator may be constructed and deployed to allow for efficient computation. We present a novel heteroscedastic Gaussian Process emulator which exploits cheap approximations to a stochastic offshore wind farm simulator. We conduct a probabilistic sensitivity analysis to understand the influence of key parameters in the wind farm simulator which will help us to plan a probability elicitation in the future.
