In an ego-network, an individual (ego) organizes its friends (alters) in different groups (social circles). This social network can be efficiently analyzed after learning representations of the ego and its alters in a low-dimensional, real vector space. These representations are then easily exploited via statistical models for tasks such as social circle detection and prediction. Recent advances in language modeling via deep learning have inspired new methods for learning network representations. These methods can capture the global structure of networks. In this paper, we evolve these techniques to also encode the local structure of neighborhoods. Therefore, our local representations capture network features that are hidden in the global representation of large networks. We show that the task of social circle prediction benefits from a combination of global and local features generated by our technique.

Network representation learning (NRL) is an effective graph analytics technique and promotes users to deeply understand the hidden characteristics of graph data. It has been successfully applied in many real-world tasks related to network science, such as social network data processing, biological information processing, and recommender systems. Deep Learning is a powerful tool to learn data features. However, it is non-trivial to generalize deep learning to graph-structured data since it is different from the regular data such as pictures having spatial information and sounds having temporal information. Recently, researchers proposed many deep learning-based methods in the area of NRL. In this survey, we investigate classical NRL from traditional feature learning method to the deep learning-based model, analyze relationships between them, and summarize the latest progress. Finally, we discuss open issues considering NRL and point out the future directions in this field.

Networks such as social networks, airplane networks, and citation networks are ubiquitous. The adjacency matrix is often adopted to represent a network, which is usually high dimensional and sparse. However, to apply advanced machine learning algorithms to network data, low-dimensional and continuous representations are desired. To achieve this goal, many network embedding methods have been proposed recently. The majority of existing methods facilitate the local information i.e. local connections between nodes, to learn the representations, while completely neglecting global information (or node status), which has been proven to boost numerous network mining tasks such as link prediction and social recommendation. Hence, it also has potential to advance network embedding. In this paper, we study the problem of preserving local and global information for network embedding. In particular, we introduce an approach to capture global information and propose a network embedding framework LOG, which can coherently model {bf LO}cal and {bf G}lobal information. Experimental results demonstrate the ability to preserve global information of the proposed framework. Further experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of learned representations of the proposed framework.
Real-world complex networks describe connections between objects; in reality, those objects are often endowed with some kind of features. How does the presence or absence of such features interplay with the network link structure? Although the situation here described is truly ubiquitous, there is a limited body of research dealing with large graphs of this kind. Many previous works considered homophily as the only possible transmission mechanism translating node features into links. Other authors, instead, developed more sophisticated models, that are able to handle complex feature interactions, but are unfit to scale to very large networks. We expand on the MGJ model, where interactions between pairs of features can foster or discourage link formation. In this work, we will investigate how to estimate the latent feature-feature interactions in this model. We shall propose two solutions: the first one assumes feature independence and it is essentially based on Naive Bayes; the second one, which relaxes the independence assumption assumption, is based on perceptrons. In fact, we show it is possible to cast the model equation in order to see it as the prediction rule of a perceptron. We analyze how classical results for the perceptrons can be interpreted in this context; then, we define a fast and simple perceptron-like algorithm for this task, which can process $10^8$ links in minutes. We then compare these two techniques, first with synthetic datasets that follows our model, gaining evidence that the Naive independence assumptions are detrimental in practice. Secondly, we consider a real, large-scale citation network where each node (i.e., paper) can be described by different types of characteristics; there, our algorithm can assess how well each set of features can explain the links, and thus finding meaningful latent feature-feature interactions.
Complex networks provide a means to describe cities through their street mesh, expressing characteristics that refer to the structure and organization of an urban zone. Although other studies have used complex networks to model street meshes, we observed a lack of methods to characterize the relationship between cities by using their topological features. Accordingly, this paper aims to describe interactions between cities by using vectors of topological features extracted from their street meshes represented as complex networks. The methodology of this study is based on the use of digital maps. Over the computational representation of such maps, we extract global complex-network features that embody the characteristics of the cities. These vectors allow for the use of multidimensional projection and clustering techniques, enabling a similarity-based comparison of the street meshes. We experiment with 645 cities from the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo. Our results show how the joint of global features describes urban indicators that are deep-rooted in the networks topology and how they reveal characteristics and similarities among sets of cities that are separated from each other.
The misalignment of human images caused by pedestrian detection bounding box errors or partial occlusions is one of the main challenges in person Re-Identification (Re-ID) tasks. Previous local-based methods mainly focus on learning local features in predefined semantic regions of pedestrians, usually use local hard alignment methods or introduce auxiliary information such as key human pose points to match local features. These methods are often not applicable when large scene differences are encountered. Targeting to solve these problems, we propose a simple and efficient Local Sliding Alignment (LSA) strategy to dynamically align the local features of two images by setting a sliding window on the local stripes of the pedestrian. LSA can effectively suppress spatial misalignment and does not need to introduce extra supervision information. Then, we design a Global-Local Dynamic Feature Alignment Network (GLDFA-Net) framework, which contains both global and local branches. We introduce LSA into the local branch of GLDFA-Net to guide the computation of distance metrics, which can further improve the accuracy of the testing phase. Evaluation experiments on several mainstream evaluation datasets including Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID, and CUHK03 show that our method has competitive accuracy over the several state-of-the-art person Re-ID methods. Additionally, it achieves 86.1% mAP and 94.8% Rank-1 accuracy on Market1501.
