As Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are increasingly being deployed, situations frequently arise where multiple stakeholders must reconcile preferences to control a shared resource. We perform a 5-month long experiment dubbed smartSDH (carried out in 27 employees office space) where users report their preferences for the brightness of overhead lighting. smartSDH implements a modified Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism; assuming users are rational, it incentivizes truthful reporting, implements the socially desirable outcome, and compensates participants to ensure higher payoffs under smartSDH when compared with the default outside option(i.e., the option chosen in the absence of such a mechanism). smartSDH assesses the feasibility of the VCG mechanism in the context of smart building control and evaluated smartSDHs effect using metrics such as light level satisfaction, incentive satisfaction, and energy consumption. Although previous studies on the theoretical aspects of the mechanism indicate user satisfaction, our experiments indicate quite the contrary. We found that the participants were significantly less satisfied with light brightness and incentives determined by the VCG mechanism over time. These data suggest the need for more realistic behavioral models to design IoT technologies and highlights difficulties in estimating preferences from observable external factors such as atmospheric conditions.
We describe the experimental procedures for a dataset that we have made publicly available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2649006 in mat and csv formats. This dataset contains electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of 25 subjects testing the Brain Invaders (Congedo, 2011), a visual P300 Brain-Computer Interface inspired by the famous vintage video game Space Invaders (Taito, Tokyo, Japan). The visual P300 is an event-related potential elicited by a visual stimulation, peaking 240-600 ms after stimulus onset. EEG data were recorded by 16 electrodes in an experiment that took place in the GIPSA-lab, Grenoble, France, in 2012 (Van Veen, 2013 and Congedo, 2013). In the era of digitalization, utilization of data-driven control approaches to minimize energy consumption of residential/commercial building is of far-reaching significance. Meanwhile, A number of recent approaches based on the application of Willems fundamental lemma for data-driven controller design from input/output measurements are very promising for deterministic LTI systems. This paper addresses the key noise-free assumption, and extends these data-driven control schemes to adaptive building control with measured process noise and unknown measurement noise via a robust bilevel formulation, whose upper level ensures robustness and whose lower level guarantees prediction quality. Corresponding numerical improvements and an active excitation mechanism are proposed to enable a computationally efficient reliable operation. The efficacy of the proposed scheme is validated by a numerical example and a real-world experiment on a lecture hall on EPFL campus.
Civil engineers use numerical simulations of a buildings responses to seismic forces to understand the nature of building failures, the limitations of building codes, and how to determine the latter to prevent the former. Such simulations generate large ensembles of multivariate, multiattribute time series. Comprehensive understanding of this data requires techniques that support the multivariate nature of the time series and can compare behaviors that are both periodic and non-periodic across multiple time scales and multiple time series themselves. In this paper, we present a novel technique to extract such patterns from time series generated from simulations of seismic responses. The core of our approach is the use of topic modeling, where topics correspond to interpretable and discriminative features of the earthquakes. We transform the raw time series data into a time series of topics, and use this visual summary to compare temporal patterns in earthquakes, query earthquakes via the topics across arbitrary time scales, and enable details on demand by linking the topic visualization with the original earthquake data. We show, through a surrogate task and an expert study, that this technique allows analysts to more easily identify recurring patterns in such time series. By integrating this technique in a prototype system, we show how it enables novel forms of visual interaction.
The rapid technological advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) allows the blueprint of Smart Cities to become feasible by integrating heterogeneous cloud/fog/edge computing paradigms to collaboratively provide variant smart services in our cities and communities. Thanks to attractive features like fine granularity and loose coupling, the microservices architecture has been proposed to provide scalable and extensible services in large scale distributed IoT systems. Recent studies have evaluated and analyzed the performance interference between microservices based on scenarios on the cloud computing environment. However, they are not holistic for IoT applications given the restriction of the edge device like computation consumption and network capacity. This paper investigates multiple microservice deployment policies on the edge computing platform. The microservices are developed as docker containers, and comprehensive experimental results demonstrate the performance and interference of microservices running on benchmark scenarios.
Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed learning framework that can deal with the distributed issue in machine learning and still guarantee high learning performance. However, it is impractical that all users will sacrifice their resources to join the FL algorithm. This motivates us to study the incentive mechanism design for FL. In this paper, we consider a FL system that involves one base station (BS) and multiple mobile users. The mobile users use their own data to train the local machine learning model, and then send the trained models to the BS, which generates the initial model, collects local models and constructs the global model. Then, we formulate the incentive mechanism between the BS and mobile users as an auction game where the BS is an auctioneer and the mobile users are the sellers. In the proposed game, each mobile user submits its bids according to the minimal energy cost that the mobile users experiences in participating in FL. To decide winners in the auction and maximize social welfare, we propose the primal-dual greedy auction mechanism. The proposed mechanism can guarantee three economic properties, namely, truthfulness, individual rationality and efficiency. Finally, numerical results are shown to demonstrate the performance effectiveness of our proposed mechanism.
