Neutron and X-ray reflectometry are powerful techniques facilitating the study of the structure of interfacial materials. The analysis of these techniques is ill-posed in nature requiring the application of a model-dependent methods. This can lead to the over- and under- analysis of experimental data, when too many or too few parameters are allowed to vary in the model. In this work, we outline a robust and generic framework for the determination of the set of free parameters that is capable of maximising the in-formation density of the model. This framework involves the determination of the Bayesian evidence for each permutation of free parameters; and is applied to a simple phospholipid monolayer. We believe this framework should become an important component in reflectometry data analysis, and hope others more regularly consider the relative evidence for their analytical models.

Deep Learning (DL) algorithms hold great promise for applications in the field of computational biophysics. In fact, the vast amount of available molecular structures, as well as their notable complexity, constitutes an ideal context in which DL-based approaches can be profitably employed. To express the full potential of these techniques, though, it is a prerequisite to express the information contained in the molecules atomic positions and distances in a set of input quantities that the network can process. Many of the molecular descriptors devised insofar are effective and manageable for relatively small structures, but become complex and cumbersome for larger ones. Furthermore, most of them are defined locally, a feature that could represent a limit for those applications where global properties are of interest. Here, we build a deep learning architecture capable of predicting non-trivial and intrinsically global quantities, that is, the eigenvalues of a proteins lowest-energy fluctuation modes. This application represents a first, relatively simple test bed for the development of a neural network approach to the quantitative analysis of protein structures, and demonstrates unexpected use in the identification of mechanically relevant regions of the molecule.
A general {it ab-initio} and non-perturbative method to solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) for the interaction of a strong attosecond laser pulse with a general atom, i.e., beyond the models of quasi-one-electron or quasi-two-electron targets, is described. The field-free Hamiltonian and the dipole matrices are generated using a flexible $B$-spline $R$-matrix method. This numerical implementation enables us to construct term-dependent, non-orthogonal sets of one-electron orbitals for the bound and continuum electrons. The solution of the TDSE is propagated in time using the Arnoldi-Lanczos method, which does not require the diagonalization of any large matrices. The method is illustrated by an application to the multi-photon excitation and ionization of Ne atoms. Good agreement with $R$-matrix Floquet calculations for the generalized cross sections for two-photon ionization is achieved.

A range-separated double-hybrid (RSDH) scheme which generalizes the usual range-separated hybrids and double hybrids is developed. This scheme consistently uses a two-parameter Coulomb-attenuating-method (CAM)-like decomposition of the electron-electron interaction for both exchange and correlation in order to combine Hartree-Fock exchange and second-order M{{o}}ller-Plesset (MP2) correlation with a density functional. The RSDH scheme relies on an exact theory which is presented in some detail. Several semi-local approximations are developed for the short-range exchange-correlation density functional involved in this scheme. After finding optimal values for the two parameters of the CAM-like decomposition, the RSDH scheme is shown to have a relatively small basis dependence and to provide atomization energies, reaction barrier heights, and weak intermolecular interactions globally more accurate or comparable to range-separated MP2 or standard MP2. The RSDH scheme represents a new family of double hybrids with minimal empiricism which could be useful for general chemical applications.
Partial Wave Analysis has traditionally been carried out using a set of tools handcrafted for each experiment. By taking an object-oriented approach, the design presented in this paper attempts to create a more generally useful, and easily extensible, environment for analyzing many different type of data.
An approach based on the Fisher information (FI) is developed to quantify the maximum information gain and optimal experimental design in neutron reflectometry experiments. In these experiments, the FI can be analytically calculated and used to provide sub-second predictions of parameter uncertainties. This approach can be used to influence real-time decisions about measurement angle, measurement time, contrast choice and other experimental conditions based on parameters of interest. The FI provides a lower bound on parameter estimation uncertainties and these are shown to decrease with the square root of measurement time, providing useful information for the planning and scheduling of experimental work. As the FI is computationally inexpensive to calculate, it can be computed repeatedly during the course of an experiment, saving costly beam time by signalling that sufficient data has been obtained; or saving experimental datasets by signalling that an experiment needs to continue. The approachs predictions are validated through the introduction of an experiment simulation framework that incorporates instrument-specific incident flux profiles, and through the investigation of measuring the structural properties of a phospholipid bilayer.
