We propose an insulating 2D phase of IrO$_{2}$, predicted by $textit{ab initio}$ evolutionary algorithms. The predicted phase is a van der Waals crystal, in which Ir forms a triangular lattice, and is energetically competitive with the metastable spinel phase, observed experimentally. Electronic structure calculations show that the magnetic properties of this phase are highly nontrivial, with an almost perfect degeneracy of 120$^{circ}$ $textit{Neel}$ and $Y$-stripe orders, and unusually soft magnetic moments. The resulting behavior, which we term $textit{easy plane anisotropy}$, is entirely different from what is realized in previously-explored Kitaev honeycomb lattices. Our results thus suggest that IrO$_{2}$ may be an ideal candidate to realize highly unusual magnetic properties.

We investigate, using a first-principles density-functional methodology, the nature of magnetism in monolayer $1T$-phase of tantalum disulfide ($1T$-TaS$_2$ ). Magnetism in the insulating phase of TaS$_2$ is a longstanding puzzle and has led to a variety of theoretical proposals including notably the realization of a two-dimensional quantum-spin-liquid phase. By means of non-collinear spin calculations, we derive $textit{ab initio}$ spin Hamiltonians including two-spin bilinear Heisenberg exchange, as well as biquadratic and four-spin ring-exchange couplings. We find that both quadratic and quartic interactions are consistently ferromagnetic, for all the functionals considered. Relativistic calculations predict substantial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Altogether, our results suggest that this material may realize an easy-plane XXZ quantum ferromagnet with large anisotropy.
Using $textit{ab-initio}$ crystal structure prediction we study the high-pressure phase diagram of $textit{A}BiO_3$ bismuthates ($A$=Ba, Sr, Ca) in a pressure range up to 100$~$GPa. All compounds show a transition from the low-pressure perovskite structure to highly distorted, low-symmetry phases at high pressures (PD transition), and remain charge disproportionated and insulating up to the highest pressure studied. The PD transition at high pressures in bismuthates can be understood as a combined effect of steric arguments and of the strong tendency of bismuth to charge-disproportionation. In fact, distorted structures permit to achieve a very efficient atomic packing, and at the same time, to have Bi-O bonds of different lengths. The shift of the PD transition to higher pressures with increasing cation size within the $textit{A}BiO_3$ series can be explained in terms of chemical pressure.
Direct experimental investigations of the low-energy electronic structure of the Na$_2$IrO$_3$ iridate insulator are sparse and draw two conflicting pictures. One relies on flat bands and a clear gap, the other involves dispersive states approaching the Fermi level, pointing to surface metallicity. Here, by a combination of angle-resolved photoemission, photoemission electron microscopy, and x-ray absorption, we show that the correct picture is more complex and involves an anomalous band, arising from charge transfer from Na atoms to Ir-derived states. Bulk quasiparticles do exist, but in one of the two possible surface terminations the charge transfer is smaller and they remain elusive.
We report equilibrium and nonequilibrium optical measurements on the recently synthesized harmonic honeycomb iridate gamma-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ (LIO), as well as the layered honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$ (NIO). Using Fourier transform infrared microscopy we performed reflectance measurements on LIO, from which we obtained the optical conductivity below 2 eV. In addition we measured the photoinduced changed in reflectance, Delta R, as a function of time, t, temperature, T, and probe field polarization in both LIO and NIO. In LIO, Delta R(t,T) is anisotropic and comprised of three T dependent components. Two of these components are related to the onset of magnetic order and the third is related to a photoinduced population of metastable electronic excited states. In NIO, Delta R(t,T) has a single T dependent component that is strikingly similar to the electronic excitation component of Delta R in LIO. Through analysis and comparison of Delta R(t,T) for two compounds, we extract information on the onset of magnetic correlations at and above the transition temperature in LIO, the bare spin-flip scattering rate in equilibrium, the lifetime of low-lying quasiparticle excitations, and the polarization dependence of optical transitions that are sensitive to magnetic order.
{it Ab initio} analyses of A$_2$IrO$_4$ (A=Sr, Ba) are presented. Effective Hubbard-type models for Ir 5$d$ $t_{2g}$ manifolds downfolded from the global band structure are solved based on the dynamical mean-field theory. The results for A=Sr and Ba correctly reproduce paramagnetic metals undergoing continuous transitions to insulators below the Neel temperature $T_N$. These compounds are classified not into Mott insulators but into Slater insulators. However, the insulating gap opens by a synergy of the Neel order and significant band renormalization, which is also manifested by a 2D bad metallic behavior in the paramagnetic phase near the quantum criticality.
