Infrasonic and seismic waves are supposed to be the main contributors to the gravity-gradient noise (Newtonian noise) of the third generation subterranean gravitational-wave detectors. This noise will limit the sensitivity of the instrument at frequencies below 20 Hz. Investigation of its origin and the possible methods of mitigation have top priority during the designing period of the detectors. Therefore long-term site characterizing measurements are needed at several subterranean sites. However, at some sites, mining activities can occur. These activities can cause sudden changes (transients) in the measured signal, and increase the continuous background noise, too. We have developed a new algorithm based on discrete Haar transform to find these transients in the infrasound signal. We found that eliminating the transients decreases the variation of the noise spectra, and hence results a more accurate characterization of the background noise. We also carried out experiments for controlling the continuous noise. Machines operating at the mine was turned on and off systematically in order to see their effect on the noise spectra. These experiments showed that the main contributor of the continuous noise is the ventilation system of the mine.

Summary of the long term data taking, related to one of the proposed next generation ground-based gravitational detectors location is presented here. Results of seismic and infrasound noise, electromagnetic attenuation and cosmic muon radiation measurements are reported in the underground Matra Gravitational and Geophysical Laboratory near Gyongyosoroszi, Hungary. The collected seismic data of more than two years is evaluated from the point of view of the Einstein Telescope, a proposed third generation underground gravitational wave observatory. Applying our results for the site selection will significantly improve the signal to nose ratio of the multi-messenger astrophysics era, especially at the low frequency regime.
We calculate the noise induced in the anisotropies of the astrophysical gravitational-wave background by finite sampling of both the galaxy distribution and the compact binary coalescence event rate. This shot noise leads to a scale-invariant bias term in the angular power spectrum $C_ell$, for which we derive a simple analytical expression. We find that this bias dominates over the true cosmological power spectrum in any reasonable observing scenario, and that only with very long observing times and removal of a large number of foreground sources can the true power spectrum be recovered.
Weak gravitational lensing observations are a key science driver for the NASA Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST). To validate the performance of the WFIRST infrared detectors, we have performed a laboratory emulation of weak gravitational lensing measurements. Our experiments used a custom precision projector system to image a target mask composed of a grid of pinholes, emulating stellar point sources, onto a 1.7 micron cut-off Teledyne HgCdTe/H2RG detector. We used a 880nm LED illumination source and f/22 pupil stop to produce undersampled point spread functions similar to those expected from WFIRST. We also emulated the WFIRST image reconstruction strategy, using the IMage COMbination (IMCOM) algorithm to derive oversampled images from dithered, undersampled input images. We created shear maps for this data and computed shear correlation functions to mimic a real weak lensing analysis. After removing only 2nd order polynomial fits to the shear maps, we found that the correlation functions could be reduced to O(10^-6). This places a conservative upper limit on the detector-induced bias to the correlation function (under our test conditions). This bias is two orders of magnitude lower than the expected weak lensing signal. Restricted to scales relevant to dark energy analyses (sky separations > 0.5 arcmin), the bias is O(10^-7): comparable to the requirement for future weak lensing missions to avoid biasing cosmological parameter estimates. Our experiment will need to be upgraded and repeated under different configurations to fully characterize the shape measurement performance of WFIRST IR detectors.
We propose a terrestrial detector for gravitational waves with frequencies between 0.3 Hz and 5 Hz. Therefore, we discuss a symmetric matter-wave interferometer with a single loop and a folded triple-loop geometry. The latter eliminates the need for atomic ensembles at femtokelvin energies imposed by the Sagnac effect in other atom interferometric detectors. It also combines several advantages of current vertical and horizontal matter wave antennas and enhances the scalability in order to achieve a peak strain sensitivity of $2cdot10^{-21},/sqrt{mathrm{Hz}}$.
Orbital geophysical investigations of Enceladus are critical to understanding its energy balance. We identified key science questions for the geophysical exploration of Enceladus, answering which would support future assessment of Enceladus astrobiological potential. Using a Bayesian framework, we explored how science requirements map to measurement requirements. We performed mission simulations to study the sensitivity of a single spacecraft and dual spacecraft configurations to static gravity and tidal Love numbers of Enceladus. We find that mapping Enceladus gravity field, improving the accuracy of the physical libration amplitude, and measuring Enceladus tidal response would provide critical constraints on the internal structure, and establish a framework for assessing Enceladus long-term habitability. This kind of investigation could be carried out as part of a life search mission at little additional resource requirements.
