A holographic model of QCD axion is presented. It describes a composite axion in the KSVZ class. Having a gravity dual, based on the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, it is calculable in the strongly coupled regime. Its basic properties are derived, including the low energy Lagrangian, from which the axion couplings to nucleons can be derived. Basic features in the deconfined phase are studied as well. In particular, the temperature dependence of the axion mass is extracted from the topological susceptibility. As an aside, the topological susceptibility of strongly coupled ${cal N}=4$ SYM at finite temperature is derived for the first time.

Axionic holographic RG flow solutions are studied in the context of general Einstein-Axion-Dilaton theories. A non-trivial axion profile is dual to the (non-perturbative) running of the $theta$-term for the corresponding instanton density operator. It is shown that a non-trivial axion solution is incompatible with a non-trivial (holographic) IR conformal fixed point. Imposing a suitable axion regularity condition allows to select the IR geometry in a unique way. The solutions are found analytically in the asymptotic UV and IR regimes, and it is shown that in those regimes the axion backreaction is always negligible. The axion backreaction may become important in the intermediate region of the bulk. To make contact with the axion probe limit solutions, a systematic expansion of the solution is developed. Several concrete examples are worked out numerically. It is shown that the regularity condition always implies a finite allowed range for the axion source parameter in the UV. This translates into the existence of a finite (but large) number of saddle-points in the large $N_c$ limit. This ties in well with axion-swampland conjectures.

We investigate cold dense matter in the context of Sakai and Sugimotos holographic model of QCD in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. In bulk, baryons are treated as instantons on S^3times R^1 in each Wigner-Seitz cell. In holographic QCD, Skyrmions are instanton holonomies along the conformal direction. The high density phase is identified with a crystal of holographic Skyrmions with restored chiral symmetry at about 4 Mkk^3/pi^5. As the average density goes up, it approaches to uniform distribution while the chiral condensate approaches to p-wave over a cell. The chiral symmetry is effectively restored in long wavelength limit since the chiral order parameter is averaged to be zero over a cell. The energy density in dense medium varies as n_B^{5/3}, which is the expected power for non-relativistic fermion. This shows that the Pauli exclusion effect in boundary is encoded in the Coulomb repulsion in the bulk.
A new method to study nuclear physics via holographic QCD is proposed. Multiple baryons in the Sakai-Sugimoto background are described by a matrix model which is a low energy effective theory of D-branes of the baryon vertices. We study the quantum mechanics of the matrix model and calculate the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. The obtained states are found to coincide with known nuclear and baryonic states, and have appropriate statistics and charges. Calculated spectra of the baryon/nucleus for small baryon numbers show good agreement with experimental data. For hyperons, the Gell-Mann--Okubo formula is approximately derived. Baryon resonances up to spin $5/2$ and isospin $5/2$ and dibaryon spectra are obtained and compared with experimental data. The model partially explains even the magic numbers of light nuclei, $N=2,8$ and $20$.

We study topological objects in holographic QCD based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model, which is constructed with $N_c$ D4 branes and $N_f$ D8/$bar{rm D8}$ branes in the superstring theory, and is infrared equivalent to 1+3 dimensional massless QCD. Using the gauge/gravity duality, holographic QCD is described as 1+4 dimensional U($N_f$) gauge theory in flavor space with a background gravity, and its instanton solutions correspond to baryons. First, using the Witten Ansatz, we reduce holographic QCD into a 1+2 dimensional Abelian Higgs theory in a curved space and consider its topological aspect. We numerically obtain the Abrikosov vortex solution and investigate single baryon properties. Second, we study a single meron and two merons in holographic QCD. The single meron carrying a half-integer baryon number is found to have a infinite energy also in holographic QCD. We propose a new-type baryon excitation of the two-merons oscillation in the extra-direction of holographic QCD.
We study the effects of the CP-breaking topological $theta$-term in the large $N_c$ QCD model by Witten, Sakai and Sugimoto with $N_f$ degenerate light flavors. We first compute the ground state energy density, the topological susceptibility and the masses of the lowest lying mesons, finding agreement with expectations from the QCD chiral effective action. Then, focusing on the $N_f=2$ case, we consider the baryonic sector and determine, to leading order in the small $theta$ regime, the related holographic instantonic soliton solutions. We find that while the baryon spectrum does not receive ${cal O}(theta)$ corrections, this is not the case for observables like the electromagnetic form factor of the nucleons. In particular, it exhibits a dipole term, which turns out to be vector-meson dominated. The resulting neutron electric dipole moment, which is exactly the opposite as that of the proton, is of the same order of magnitude of previous estimates in the literature. Finally, we compute the CP-violating pion-nucleon coupling constant ${bar g}_{pi N N}$, finding that it is zero to leading order in the large $N_c$ limit.
