We prove a generalization of a conjecture of C. Marion on generation properties of finite groups of Lie type, by considering geometric properties of an appropriate representation variety and associated tangent spaces.
We show that a triangle Artin group $text{Art}_{MNP}$ where $Mleq Nleq P$ splits as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension of finite rank free groups, provided that either $M>2$, or $N>3$. We also prove that all even three generator Artin groups are residually finite.
We show that for a fixed k, Gromov random groups with any positive density have no non-trivial degree-k representations over any field, a.a.s. This is especially interesting in light of the results of Agol, Ollivier and Wise that when the density is less than 1/6 such groups have a faithful linear representation over the rationals, a.a.s.
We introduce and study a new class of representations of surface groups into Lie groups of Hermitian type, called weakly maximal representations. They are defined in terms of invariants in bounded cohomology and extend considerably the scope of maximal representations. We prove that weakly maximal representations are discrete and injective and describe the structure of the Zariski closure of the image. An interesting feature of these representations is that they admit an elementary topological characterization in terms of bi-invariant orderings. In particular if the target group is Hermitian of tube type, the ordering can be described in terms of the causal structure on the Shilov boundary.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety with basepoint x. We prove that every rigid integral irreducible representation $pi_1(X,x)to SL (3,{mathbb C})$ is of geometric origin, i.e., it comes from some family of smooth projective varieties. This partially generalizes an earlier result by K. Corlette and the second author in the rank 2 case and answers one of their questions.
This article is dedicated to the study of asymptotically rigid mapping class groups of infinitely-punctured surfaces obtained by thickening planar trees. Such groups include the braided Ptolemy-Thompson groups $T^sharp,T^ast$ introduced by Funar and Kapoudjian, and the braided Houghton groups $mathrm{br}H_n$ introduced by Degenhardt. We present an elementary construction of a contractible cube complex, on which these groups act with cube-stabilisers isomorphic to finite extensions of braid groups. As an application, we prove Funar-Kapoudjians and Degenhardts conjectures by showing that $T^sharp,T^ast$ are of type $F_infty$ and that $mathrm{br}H_n$ is of type $F_{n-1}$ but not of type $F_n$.
