Co substituted Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Br$_2$ (0 $leq~x~leq$ 1) single crystals were synthesized using vapor transport. The physical properties of the crystals were characterized by x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, and specific heat measurements. Room temperature x-ray powder diffraction data indicate a change from the CdCl$_2$ structure type to the CdI$_2$ structure type occurs within 0.56 $<~x~<$ 0.76. NiBr$_2$ has a commensurate antiferromagnetic phase below $T_{rm N} approx$ 46 K and an incommensurate magnetic ground state below $T_{rm IC} approx$ 20 K. Both magnetic transitions are affected by cobalt substitution, and the incommensurate phase transition is present up to at least $x$ = 0.56. The evolution of magnetism has been studied as a function of cobalt content and is summarized in the temperature-composition phase diagram.

The application of pressure as well as the successive substitution of Ru with Fe in the hidden order (HO) compound URu$_2$Si$_2$ leads to the formation of the large moment antiferromagnetic phase (LMAFM). Here we have investigated the substitution series URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ with $x$ = 0.2 and 0.3 with non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) and 4$f$ core-level photoelectron spectroscopy with hard x-rays (HAXPES). NIXS shows that the substitution of Fe has no impact on the symmetry of the ground-state wave function. In HAXPES we find no shift of spectral weight that would be indicative for a change of the 5$f$-electron count. Consequently, changes in the exchange interaction $cal{J}$ due to substitution must be minor so that the conjecture of chemical pressure seems unlikely. An alternative scenario is discussed, namely the formation of long range magnetic order due the substitution induced local enhancement of the magnetization in the vicinity of the $f$-electron ions while the overall electronic structure remains unchanged.
Unravelling the nature of doping-induced transition between a Mott insulator and a weakly correlated metal is crucial to understanding novel emergent phases in strongly correlated materials. For this purpose, we study the evolution of spectral properties upon doping Mott insulating states, by utilizing the cluster perturbation theory on the Hubbard and t-J-like models. Specifically, a quasi-free dispersion crossing the Fermi level develops with small doping, and it eventually evolves into the most dominant feature at high doping levels. Although this dispersion is related to the free electron hopping, our study shows that this spectral feature is in fact influenced inherently by both electron-electron correlation and spin exchange interaction: the correlation destroys coherence, while the coupling between spin and mobile charge restores it in the photoemission spectrum. Due to the persistent impact of correlations and spin physics, the onset of gaps or the high-energy anomaly in the spectral functions can be expected in doped Mott insulators.

The structure and magnetic properties of Co clusters, comprising from 26 to 2700 atoms, self-organized or not on the graphene/Ir(111) moire, were studied in situ with the help of scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Surprisingly the small clusters have almost no magnetic anisotropy. We find indication for a magnetic coupling between the clusters. Experiments have to be performed carefully so as to avoid cluster damage by the soft X-rays.

The growth dynamics of submonolayer coverages of Cobalt during buffer layer assisted growth on Ag(111) and Pt(111) substrates is investigated by variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range between 80 and 150 Kelvin. It is found that attractive cluster-substrate interactions can govern the cluster formation on the Xe buffer layer, if the Xe layer is sufficiently thin. The interpretation of the microscopy results are supported by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism which monitors the effect of cluster-substrate interactions on the formation of magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy of Co nanocluster during the different stages of growth. {it Ab-initio} calculations show that the cluster magnetism is controlled by the interface anisotropy, leading to perpendicular magnetization for Co on Pt(111). Limits of and new potential for nanocluster fabrication by buffer layer assisted growth are discussed.

A series of in-plane substituted compounds, including Cu-site (SrZn$_x$Cu$_{2-x}$(BO$_3$)$_2$), and B-site (SrCu$_2$(Si$_x$B$_{1-x}$O$_3$)$_2$) substitution, were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that these compounds are single-phase materials and their in-plane lattice parameter depends systematically on the substituting content $x$. The magnetic susceptibility in different magnetic fields, the magnetization at different temperatures, and the resistivity at room temperature were measured, respectively. It is found that the spin gap deduced from the magnetic susceptibility measurements decreases with increasing of $x$ in both Cu- and B-site substitution. No superconductivity was found in these substituted compounds.
