Robust estimation approaches are of fundamental importance for statistical modelling. To reduce susceptibility to outliers, we propose a robust estimation procedure with t-process under functional ANOVA model. Besides common mean structure of the studied subjects, their personal characters are also informative, especially for prediction. We develop a prediction method to predict the individual effect. Statistical properties, such as robustness and information consistency, are studied. Numerical studies including simulation and real data examples show that the proposed method performs well.

In observational clinic registries, time to treatment is often of interest, but treatment can be given at any time during follow-up and there is no structure or intervention to ensure regular clinic visits for data collection. To address these challenges, we introduce the time-dependent propensity process as a generalization of the propensity score. We show that the propensity process balances the entire time-varying covariate history which cannot be achieved by existing propensity score methods and that treatment assignment is strongly ignorable conditional on the propensity process. We develop methods for estimating the propensity process using observed data and for matching based on the propensity process. We illustrate the propensity process method using the Emory Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Registry data.
We introduce flexible robust functional regression models, using various heavy-tailed processes, including a Student $t$-process. We propose efficient algorithms in estimating parameters for the marginal mean inferences and in predicting conditional means as well interpolation and extrapolation for the subject-specific inferences. We develop bootstrap prediction intervals for conditional mean curves. Numerical studies show that the proposed model provides robust analysis against data contamination or distribution misspecification, and the proposed prediction intervals maintain the nominal confidence levels. A real data application is presented as an illustrative example.
Gaussian process regression (GPR) model has been widely used to fit data when the regression function is unknown and its nice properties have been well established. In this article, we introduce an extended t-process regression (eTPR) model, which gives a robust best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP). Owing to its succinct construction, it inherits many attractive properties from the GPR model, such as having closed forms of marginal and predictive distributions to give an explicit form for robust BLUP procedures, and easy to cope with large dimensional covariates with an efficient implementation by slightly modifying existing BLUP procedures. Properties of the robust BLUP are studied. Simulation studies and real data applications show that the eTPR model gives a robust fit in the presence of outliers in both input and output spaces and has a good performance in prediction, compared with the GPR and locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOESS) methods.
Robust estimation and variable selection procedure are developed for the extended t-process regression model with functional data. Statistical properties such as consistency of estimators and predictions are obtained. Numerical studies show that the proposed method performs well.
Functional principal component analysis (FPCA) has been widely used to capture major modes of variation and reduce dimensions in functional data analysis. However, standard FPCA based on the sample covariance estimator does not work well in the presence of outliers. To address this challenge, a new robust functional principal component analysis approach based on the functional pairwise spatial sign (PASS) operator, termed PASS FPCA, is introduced where we propose estimation procedures for both eigenfunctions and eigenvalues with and without measurement error. Compared to existing robust FPCA methods, the proposed one requires weaker distributional assumptions to conserve the eigenspace of the covariance function. In particular, a class of distributions called the weakly functional coordinate symmetric (weakly FCS) is introduced that allows for severe asymmetry and is strictly larger than the functional elliptical distribution class, the latter of which has been well used in the robust statistics literature. The robustness of the PASS FPCA is demonstrated via simulation studies and analyses of accelerometry data from a large-scale epidemiological study of physical activity on older women that partly motivates this work.
