TREND50 is a radio detection setup of 50 self-triggered antennas working in the 50-100MHz frequency range and deployed in a radio-quiet valley of the Tianshan mountains (China). TREND50 achieved its goal: the autonomous radiodetection and identification of air showers. Thanks to a dedicated offine selection algorithm, 564 air shower candidates were indeed selected out of $7cdot10^8$ transient radio signals recorded during the 314 live days of data taken during the first two years of operation of this setup (2011 and 2012). This event rate, as well as the distribution of the candidate directions of arrival, is consistent with what is expected from cosmic-ray-induced air showers according to simulations, assuming an additional $sim$20% contamination of the final sample by background events. This result is obtained at the cost of a reduced air shower detection efficiency, estimated to be $sim$3%. This low efficiency is mostly due to the large amount of dead time of the setup. This result paves the way for the GRANDProto35 experiment, the first stage of the GRAND project.

Extensive Air Showers (EAS) arrival direction distribution is studied by means of a 4-detector installation in Telavi (TEL array), which is a node of GELATICA net in Georgia. The description of EAS arrival zenith angle distribution within the spheric layer model of the atmosphere and exponential absorption of showers with the air path is used. It is shown that the variation of zenith angles upper cutoff boundary allows a stable estimation of showers absorption path.
CoREAS is a Monte Carlo code for the simulation of radio emission from extensive air showers. It implements the endpoint formalism for the calculation of electromagnetic radiation directly in CORSIKA. As such, it is parameter-free, makes no assumptions on the emission mechanism for the radio signals, and takes into account the complete complexity of the electron and positron distributions as simulated by CORSIKA. In this article, we illustrate the capabilities of CoREAS with simulations carried out in different frequency ranges from tens of MHz up to GHz frequencies, and describe in particular the emission characteristics at high frequencies due to Cherenkov effects arising from the varying refractive index of the atmosphere.
The emission of radio waves from air showers has been attributed to the so-called geomagnetic emission process. At frequencies around 50 MHz this process leads to coherent radiation which can be observed with rather simple setups. The direction of the electric field induced by this emission process depends only on the local magnetic field vector and on the incoming direction of the air shower. We report on measurements of the electric field vector where, in addition to this geomagnetic component, another component has been observed which cannot be described by the geomagnetic emission process. The data provide strong evidence that the other electric field component is polarized radially with respect to the shower axis, in agreement with predictions made by Askaryan who described radio emission from particle showers due to a negative charge-excess in the front of the shower. Our results are compared to calculations which include the radiation mechanism induced by this charge-excess process.
Extensive air showers, induced by high energy cosmic rays impinging on the Earths atmosphere, produce radio emission that is measured with the LOFAR radio telescope. As the emission comes from a finite distance of a few kilometers, the incident wavefront is non-planar. A spherical, conical or hyperbolic shape of the wavefront has been proposed, but measurements of individual air showers have been inconclusive so far. For a selected high-quality sample of 161 measured extensive air showers, we have reconstructed the wavefront by measuring pulse arrival times to sub-nanosecond precision in 200 to 350 individual antennas. For each measured air shower, we have fitted a conical, spherical, and hyperboloid shape to the arrival times. The fit quality and a likelihood analysis show that a hyperboloid is the best parametrization. Using a non-planar wavefront shape gives an improved angular resolution, when reconstructing the shower arrival direction. Furthermore, a dependence of the wavefront shape on the shower geometry can be seen. This suggests that it will be possible to use a wavefront shape analysis to get an additional handle on the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum, which is sensitive to the mass of the primary particle.
We present LOFAR measurements of radio emission from extensive air showers. We find that this emission is strongly polarized, with a median degree of polarization of nearly $99%$, and that the angle between the polarization direction of the electric field and the Lorentz force acting on the particles, depends on the observer location in the shower plane. This can be understood as a superposition of the radially polarized charge-excess emission mechanism, first proposed by Askaryan and the geomagnetic emission mechanism proposed by Kahn and Lerche. We calculate the relative strengths of both contributions, as quantified by the charge-excess fraction, for $163$ individual air showers. We find that the measured charge-excess fraction is higher for air showers arriving from closer to the zenith. Furthermore, the measured charge-excess fraction also increases with increasing observer distance from the air shower symmetry axis. The measured values range from $(3.3pm 1.0)%$ for very inclined air showers at $25, mathrm{m}$ to $(20.3pm 1.3)%$ for almost vertical showers at $225, mathrm{m}$. Both dependencies are in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions.
